Friday Flotsam

Frrrrrrrrrrrrmastolf yadrif!

You will NEVER guess what we got. Never.

Never!

An ice maker. For our fridge.

Wait why are you making that face right now?

I suppose the ice maker was already in the fridge, but when I frantically bought the new appliance last December in a stress rage, I thought, “We’ll get the damn ice maker hose thingy later!” And later became September of 2025. We have ice. MOM, WE HAVE ICE!

This is how you enjoy life, you guys, you severely lower your standards like all, all across the board.

I forgot how fancy ice is when it comes from an ice maker. The ice is smooth, has that classic ’90s rich family shape. Oh you know exactly what I’m talking about. Ice from a bag? Pfff. Jagged, cragged and such a hassle. Ice from an ice maker? Now we’re talking. Livin’ high. And I forgot how you can lift that little lever to stop or start the production of ice. The thrill!

The kids are wild about it. Now we’ll never have to go to Disney World!!

Guess what I’m doing today. (besides waxing poetic about an ice maker and needing friends)

It’s Practical Magic Day! What does this mean exactly? Well I will tell you, and then you can steal the idea for a day this fall. My friend Kate and I will hit two estate sales at the top of the morning with iced coffees and the new Sarah McLachlan. Then we’ll hit Trader Joe’s for snacks and bourbon. Why bourbon? To make our vanilla extract again! We each started a batch last October, so today is the refill/refresher. A few new beans, a glug or three of bourbon (<–a friend gave us a tip last fall to use bourbon for a deeper flavor and heeeee was right) into a pretty container, let it work its (practical) magic for another year. Then we’ll come back to my house, eat cheese and crackers and watch Sandra and Nicole and Stockard and Dianne before school lets out at 3:15pm. It’s perfect!

And yes, I’m well aware that the new one comes out on September 18th next year. Perfectly planned, right?

So that’s today. Steal the idea! Do it!

Hey, real quick, before we start a new season, I’d like to issue an apology to all of those I hurt when I made the post about audiobooks “not counting.” Look, they do. And I’m sorry. I wasn’t trying to be insensitive or an “ableist” (was called that word like 97 times that day and had to look it up!) It wasn’t my intention to hurt anyone. The world is tense enough without my short-sighted opinion on the matter making it any worse. So if I hurt you, I take responsibility. I am truly sorry for that.

Had to clear the air before fall officially starts so that we’re clean and new together! Listen to them, read them, consume them via tin foil osmosis. It matters none. Love you all.

Weekend plans?

We have very little and I’m obsessed. Besides our Practical Magic day today, a late soccer game tonight, an antique store’s open house tomorrow, a family night on Saturday night (going to watch Fantastic Mr. Fox with the kids and eat something sort of themed with the movie. what should that be?), and some yard work on Sunday, that’s it! That’s all she wrote! OH, making my way through All Fours and . . . what even is this book? It’s WILD. I’ll report back soon.

From this week::: an Air Fryer Honey Mustard Chicken and Potatoes that will leave you speechless. And a video!

Okay, tell me what fall things you’re up to this weekend. Besides going to look at your ice shape.

Having ice maker ice and stairs were the two signs in the 80s that you definitely had money. We had neither. Haha I’m not sure what happened with the audiobook comment, but I’m sorry you felt like you had to apologize. People are too quick to be offended, and too quick to make sure people know they’re offended. We live in a bizarre world. Weekend plans: birthday dinner with friends, a little work on our Airbnbs, and some folk dancing with the homeschool group.

Coffee with friends today. Driving carefully through the neighborhood as it's garage sale AND trash pick up day. Hoping someone takes the ancient and heavy computer desk that's lived in our basement for 22 years and is now at the end of the driveway with a "FREE" sign. MAYBE Plaza Art Fair. Making bars from Molly Yeh's Sweet Farm. Trying a new shrimp recipe that uses an entire head of garlic, used in several ways. Going to another friend's house tomorrow to help her dig up some garden beds and score lots of free hostas, ferns, and wild ginger for the backyard at our daughter's new house!

I’m out of town & still high from the Allen Stone concert last night! Going to meet my sister’s bf for lunch & then some shopping and hopefully a little nap. I’m not use to staying up until midnight!

No need to apologize and I'm an audiobooker here!;) WE consists of Pilates, walk along the Hudson River at moonrise/dusk, hem some lovely but way too long IKEA curtains to spruce up the living room and an Astrology reading! En-joy everyone and find that "JOY-en" your weekends too!

I remember when we moved to a house that had a place for a stand alone ice maker. We thought we were in heaven and anytime anyone came over, we immediately pressured them to have an iced drink of some sort. Sadly, we left it behind when we moved and have never had a place for one since. As for audiobooks, I listened to many way back when they were still on cassettes and I had hour long commutes. Now I am only in the car for short trips, so read books on my Ipad.
