Friday Flotsam

FRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRurderrrrrr.

I firmly believe there are two types of puzzle people. (yes we’re back to this subject, calm down.)

Type one: the person who puts together a jigsaw puzzle while looking at the cover of the box for guidance.

Type two: the person who sits down to work on a jigsaw puzzle, notices the box propped up on the table as other puzzle members glance to it and yell, “That’s cheating! You can’t look at the box!”

Before I go on, what type are you? Do you look at the box, or do you not look at the box? (“What’s in the booooox?”– NTM)

I’m sorry, but who is going to spend seventy five months doing a puzzle and NOT LOOK AT THE BOX? If you look at the box, you are my people.

I look at the box, is what I’m saying. I have zero patience as it is, so to add non-box-looking is complete nonsense to me. We’re looking at the box, you guys. I have a book to finish, after all.

Look at the box already.

Okay, remember our Family Stone vs. Love Actually poll? (You’re like, “That was two weeks ago, Bev. We’re not morons.”)

Okay sorry sorry! Let’s do another one. And I already know the answer to this one, but I’m asking anyway because it was brought up at Thanksgiving and was a total SHOCK, but also not, once you really think about it. So here goes. Ready?

Who would win in a fight? (I added that part)

It’s a Wonderful Life vs. Miracle on 34th Street? (<–the 1947 version, obvs.)

Look, it’s a surprisingly legit poll because these movies were released only one year apart, both classics, both black and white, both with a similar struggling-to-believe-in-the-magic vibe.

So, which one just does it for you and your soul?

I have my answer, but I need yours. Right meow. (<–ew sorry)

Speaking of shopping, where do you stand? Like on a scale from DUNZO to wait what? Do you save all your shopping for that sparkly December hustle? Or do you order it all before Halloween and save the stocking stuffers for December? Or are you somewhere in between? Or do you wait until the 23rd? Or are you sick of talking about it?

I have stuffers to go. I’ve already purchased my own (new sleep masks and a Trader Joe’s skin trio thingy!), but I still need the kids’. We always put an orange in the stocking. Is that something you do, too? Aaron’s dad always put an orange in his stocking, so it trickled down.

Trickled down was a horrible way to say that.

So yeah, where do you stand?

Did you x out?

Okay, desserts. (I didn’t make that pie but isn’t it lovely?)

I need to make Mexican Wedding Cookies. All caps. I asked you guys in Stories if they were considered Christmas cookies, and yes, turns out – they are! I think they’re the same as Russian Tea Cakes? AND Snowball Cookies? AND Pecan Ball Cookies? All caps. Is that right? I could ask Google but you’re cuter.

This is the thing, would you send me your favorite Mexican Tea Snowball Pecan Cookie so that I can make them yesterday? That’s on my list, and BABKA. Chocolate Babka, brah! Remember when I made my first one last December? I’m making it a tradition. The day the kids come home early from school, we make-a the babka. (which sounds like, “Well if you’re tired ya take a napa, you don’t move to Napa.”) I’m so excited. If you have a good recipe for that too, shoot her over.

Thanks for being there for me.

ALSO, omg next Thursday is Just Like That and I’m going to cry. I’m already crying.

Weekend plans?

Running, reading and wrapping! Me, not you. The rest of this month is bananas, so I’m keeping it zen with horse blinders on for the next three days and not speaking to a soul. You think I’m kidding.

From this week, in case you missed it! YOUR HOLIDAY MIXTAPE. It’s so fun and lovely and perfect. Start listening immediately, or else. And this is such a good one – Knack Gift Boxes! If you’re struggling to figure out something unique to give, you need to check this out. You can curate the boxes yourself, or they can do the work for you. And you tailor it to your budget! It just works. Get those discounts, too!

So right – Life or Miracle? Let’s start this showdown.

Well since you went with the original Miracle on 34th Street then It’s a Wonderful Life all the way. If you had said the 94 version I would have been torn and tortured so thank you for making it easy. “Hot dog!”

An orange in the bottom of the stocking is traditional in my family. I continued that with my children, and now it’s a tradition with my daughter’s family.

If you went where I think you went with the box that Weaver chose instead of the very tasty red snapper...."nothing! Absolutely nothing!". If you didn't go where I think you went, I likely sound insane. Cheers to you and yours!

Definitely look at the box! We'd be here until next Christmas if we didn't!

I absolutely look at the box and, usually not long after the outside is done, I abandon the puzzle for a book and let my family finish it. Definitely Miracle on 34th Street. I grew up watching that and think I was in my 40s when I finally saw It's a Wonderful Life from beginning to end. I'm about halfway done shopping, but think I know what I am going to get to finish up, so that's a huge relief. My Russian Tea Cake recipe is pretty standard but, instead of doing the second roll in powdered sugar once they've cooled, I tend to sift it over them instead. The rolling is such a pain.
