Friday Flotsam

FRRRRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrr……………..!

Is your bracket busted? This is the one time I’ll ask, okay?! I think Kentucky done ruint everyone. I felt the collected aaargh of the country once that overtime did not go as expected.

You’re just floored I’m talking about sports, ain’t cha?

Last thing about this and we’ll move on to other crucially critical topics, okay?

Who’s in your FINAL FOUR? If it was Kentucky – sorry, bruh.

Mine is Gonzaga, Baylor, Villanova and Kansas. I have KU winning the whole thing, beating Baylor. Remember 2008?? That was intense!

Anyway I can feel 87% of you reaching up to x out of this blog post, so I’ll switch gears before you’re a goner.

(but tell me who’s in your Final Four. I genuinely want to know.)

(really)

(fir ril)

(sorry I type like a teenager)

Let’s play UNPOPULAR OPINION. (noooow you’re excited)

This came up in my GirlSquad text this week, after the Senate voted (unanimously) to nix the whole Daylight Savings (Saving but whatever) thing. Now, you know how I feel about it. I’ve talked about it before in here. I love the time change! I look forward to both the fall and the spring time change every year. Something dramatic to look forward to. A physical act of marking the seasonal change. It’s something I’ve (honestly and I mean TRULY) treasured my entire life, spanning back to childhood. On those Saturday nights in Hobbs, NM we’d always excitedly try to decide at dinner (supper if you talk to my mom) if we should turn the clocks back (or forward) that evening? Or the next morning? We needed to feel festive, you see. #needsfriends

WHY NIX IT? What purpose does it serve? And why do Americans hate it so much? Because Americans hate it so much.

I know I’m incredibly alone in this (besides my friend Sarah), but I’m curious if you’re relieved at all? Or secretly let down that something so monumental is changing. Going away. Forever.

Well, I supposed the House to pass it, but I feel like they will. Not this house! Hahaha!

Oh.

Here’s something else that came up last week that I’m definitely alone on. And I didn’t exactly go into the root of where this comes from in Stories, so I’ll tell you here. And I need to know where you stand, obviously.

Kleenex boxes. Are you pro Kleenex box? Like the little cardboard square or rectangle box that you yank a tissue out of. Do you do this?

You’re like, “Well I live on Planet Earth so that would be a yes.”

Would you believe I stopped yeeaaaaaaarrrrrrrrs ago? This is why. Two things. Two reasons behind it.

  1. I remember reading in an old (like 2005) Real Simple magazine that it was much more economical to use toilet paper instead of tissues because you’re paying for the box and all that folding. Ah ha! moment, as it was called. So I switched to tp and never looked back. Trashy? For sure. Into it? Also for sure.
  2. Secondly, I remember hating all the designs for Kleenex boxes. Nothing was at-all fashionable about them. And if you even try to get me to buy something crocheted or knitted we are done here.

Tell me, pro box? Or pro roll?

Have you ever forgotten a password to something (besides 86 times a day like me) like an email account, and it asks you to change the password, and that it will send you an email to that very account that you cannot get into with a link to change it?

Right.

Just putting that right here.

Weekend plans?

Today is rain rain RAIN (so into it), so I’m taking the kids to an estate sale this morning and to a festive lunch right after to celebrate the end of spring break. Then it’s bracket following, book reading and maybe a load of laundry this afternoon. Tomorrow it’s much warmer and sunny so we’re meeting friends at the Garden Center for their big spring fest and finding a patio immediately after to watch KU and bask in the sunshine. I’ll have my visor, fret not.

From this week! Creamy Skillet Chicken with Mushrooms. You can have this with pasta, rice, polenta, anything. It’s tearfully flavorful. And Book Club! Three of my favorite reads so far this year. You better get in that and tell me if you agree.

So okay, Final Four – spill it.

Lots to cover: 1. Supper. Dinner is the big mid day meal on Sunday or Holidays. Midwest farmers on both sides of my family. 2. Kleenex boxes in most rooms. Yes, they are ugly. Used to use decorative covers. 3. I'm with you on keeping the time change or sticking with Standard Time not Daylight Time--I cannot handle a morning where the sun doesn't rise until after 9 am in the winter. 4. Arkansa, Texas, Arizona and Wisconsin. Wisconsin taking it all. Have a great weekend!

No bracket here. But I'm from NC so I hope Duke wins it all but especially since it's Coach K's final dance. I use boxed tissues but am not crazy about the designs either. But I saw this woman on IG the other day take all the tissues out of the rectangular box, fold them and put them in a clear glass bowl (more like an orb than a bowl) that sat in a gold colored metal holder (hard to describe) and it actually made tissues look rather elegant. So obviously I am now on the hunt for such a vessel for my tissues.

You're not alone with the DST thing. I'm very sad to see it go! I love the dark, dreary (cozy!) nights of winter (I know, that sounds weird), and in the spring when you get that extra hour of light at the end of the day, it's like a gift! I have a hard time believing people find it that hard to adjust to one hour's difference in time. Really?? So glad my body clock is not quite so curmudgeonly. And the only time I buy tissues is if someone has bad cold or I have an overnight guest. Otherwise it's tp all the way! Oh, and thanks for the book suggestions. The first two sound great and I have them on order from the library. If you haven't read "West with Giraffes", do!!

I am SO with you. It takes me zero time to adjust to any time change. And I love the cozy dim winters and the refreshing springs. I just cannot imagine it any other way! Others have recommended West with Giraffes, so thank you!

Gonzaga vs Baylor and Villanova vs Auburn. I pick mine with absolutely NO research or knowledge of who has done what so far in the season! :) I like the names.

    1. Dinner. 2. Kleenex boxes everywhere!!!! (Allergy Asthma girl). Plus I love the tissue with lotion or the smell of Vicks vapor rub!!! 3. I’m weird. Love time change. Love darkness in fall ! 4. My final 4 still intact. 5. Have a password issue with Instagram. Ugh.

Yes, 100% agree on the time change!! 4pm winter sunsets aren't great, but neither would be 9am winter sunrises? Why do people hate the time changes so much?? I really look forward to the spring one! Is it really that different from traveling to te next time zone which people do ALL THE TIME?!!

I am with you on DST! Mostly because I love it in the winter when it is dark super early so I have no guilt putting pajamas on at 5 PM! As far as March madness, I have KU winning the whole shebang as well! My father-in-law was a diehard KU fan since he went to KU, and he passed last July so in honor of him I chose KU over Iowa which is where I am from. And Leslie, I cannot get on board with toilet paper instead of Kleenex‘s, but you and my husband must be kindred spirits because he’s all about the toilet paper to blow his nose😂

No brackets for me either. I buy my boxed tissues in bulk at Costco, that’s how devoted to them I am. I just keep the ugly boxes out of sight. But now I’m intrigued by Nancy’s fancy tissue display idea. My fabulous friend detests tissue boxes and uses TP, but I feel he was traumatized in childhood by his dad, who had a complete set up next to his recliner: tissue box, remote control, TV Guide, a pen, tooth picks (maybe I made that last one up), etc. The sight of my tissue box can trigger him. Here’s my question for TP users. What do you do during allergy season? Is there a roll of TP in every room? Do you run to the bathroom a thousand times a day to blow your nose? Or keep wads of TP in your pocket? I too like the ritual of DST and carefully synchronizing all the clocks in my kitchen. It’s very satisfying.

My mind is blown with the toilet paper replacing Kleenex boxes. Environmentally and aesthetically it makes complete sense, but I'd have to step up my toilet paper game. As far as my bracket goes KANSAS, Loyola (because that's where my son is going to college next year-I'm very scientific), Purdue, and Duke. This teacher is in mourning Spring Break is almost over.

Both of my brackets were in shambles by the end of Thursday. But that's why we love March Madness, right?
  11. Sue March 18, 2022 at 1:20 pm #
    1. Baylor, KU, and Tech alums are all in this household, so my four are Tech, Baylor, Villanova, and KU. Tech and KU in the championship game, and KU taking it all! 2. Yes, will be very sad to not experience the fall and spring time changes. 3. Toilet paper except in the guest room, where a roll of TP on the nightstand wouldn’t seem welcoming.

Zags, UCLA, Arizona, Auburn. Zags win!!!!! 🤞🏻

Dinner! My Elite Eight are still intact with Villanova taking the whole thing🤞I agree with you on tissue boxes, I’m weird with clutter of any sort-TP all day! I guess I’m not in the majority for DST, so happy we’re doing away with it. I feel like my day is cut so short when it’s dark at 4pm and I’m not as productive HOWEVER I do understand the cozy aspect of it 😘
