Friday Flotsam

Frrrrrrrrrrrrrrow’s your bracket?!

Let’s start there before I reveal a shocker of all shockers.

FIRST OF ALL, did you see Arkansas last night? I did not, I’m a grandma and went to bed. But I got up and Aaron gave me the heartbreaking details. How sad! To have such an intense lead, only to lose in overtime by a single point. They were the Cinderella for a heartbeat. Anyway, 3/4th of my Final Four is still in tact. I do have Duke taking it all against Michigan State. How about you? Who are you pulling for? I have to know these details as we cascade further into Sweet Sixteen/March Madness weekend!

Also I seriously doubt the word “cascade” has ever been used in describing anything remotely basketball related, yet here we are.

Also, I have a POOOOOLLLLLLLLAH!, before we get to the big thing.

My Bose bluetooth speaker has been with us for yeaaaaars. And it’s a nice one! Our main source of speakerage. Speakerage? Well, it’s about to die. Listen to this, it only plays parts of songs. And by that I mean like, half of the instruments and vocals. For example, Monday Monday by the Mamas & the Papas, when I play that song, it doesn’t play the “Ba daaaaaa, ba da da da.” Only the “Monday Mondaaaaaay.” So like, harmonies are left out! And it makes me feel crazy untethered in life. Isn’t that the most bizarre thing you’ve ever heard? (not me being untethered, the speaker short.)

We need a new one. BUT, I need to know which is better – Sonos or Bose? I’m not looking to get a three billion dollar system with the bar and the subwoofer and antennas and hubcaps and a French manicure. Just a solid bluetooth speaker I can move around the house and yard, and take to picnics and things. What’s the better option? And before you do, put on Monday Monday and tell me if you can hear the “ba daaaa ba da da da” part before you report back. ON your speaker. Tell me you hear it. Tell me I’m not headed to the funny farm.

Tell me.

Okay, I’m about to admit something to you and the entire world that will shock straight to your core innards. So I’m going to get it over with and say it right now.

I’ve never seen the 2005 version of Pride and Prejudice.

Listen, take your time with that. Clean up the coffee that just spewed onto your keyboard. Rest your eyes for a moment. A quick walk around your desk? Go for it. Because I’ve never seen that movie. Never. The Keira one. The big one. Never. I’m a horrible person. I play the soundtrack almost every single day and live in a Jane Austen Vibes Bubble over here, yet I’ve never seen that version.

BUT!!! Did you see it’s COMING BACK TO THEATERS NEXT MONTH?! (all caps completely necessary) It’s coming back to theaters! And I’m going to go see it! I HAVE to. I HAVE to see it and be bewitched body and soul. I have to right this wrong and live my truth. It’s a must!

Will you go watch it in the theaters, too? Look into it!

Okay, I feel better now that you know. Are we still friends?

Weekend plans?

I’m wallpapering this weekend! I hope I don’t jank it up. I’ll show you next week. Also hitting an estate sale this morning with a friend, going to a school skating party tonight, and the KC Current game tomorrow night with our entire soccer team! I’ll show you that, too. A soccer game Sunday morning (if the rain holds off) and a bit of reading and garden bed prep. And getting P&P movie tickets! And thinking about which speaker direction to go in. See how I depend on you?? Never mind.

From this week: Greek Chicken Tacos! A wildly simple twist on taco night. You’ll love it. And a video!

Are you okay after my big admission? I feel like things are weird. Tell me they’re not weird.

I'm old, so it's Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle for me. I have seen the Keira version, but am not shaken that you have not.

It’s one of my very favorite movies. I won’t even tell you how many times I have seen it, but it’s a lot! I hope you love it! And those tacos!! Brilliant!

I say don’t waste your time and just stick with the BBC version😆

Duke all the way, baby! I have never seen any movie version of P & P nor have I read the book! Does this make me a loser? I think not. Maybe I’ll go see it in the theater if it comes out before the end of April because that is when my Regal unlimited is getting canceled. I know you didn’t ask to hear all that but here we are! Happy Friday!

Don’t have an opinion on P&P, except wet, white shirt. On the topic of speakers, we have Sonos speakers, including an old one and a newer pair that wouldn't sync for years (Years! I worked futilely to sync them). After a recent Sonos update (ahem, lawsuit), the speakers finally miraculously synced and now work together. However, our local music gear shop doesn't favor Sonos and suggests sticking with Bose for better sound quality.

LIke a fool I chose Florida to win it all. What was I thinking? If they are going to win it all, they are going to have to tighten things up !! We love our BOSE portable speaker. Cant beat the sound. Love the 2005 version of P&P ( and Im OLD)

I have tried a bunch of Bluetooth speakers, and my favorite has been Soundcore. I've had it for a few years, and it's held up nicely and has great sound. I think the closest one to the one I have is the Boom 2—and it's on sale right now on Amazon! Ballin on a budget!

My husband is a sound person and we have Sonos speakers throughout the house. We don't have a subwoofer or the other thing, but we do have the sound bar. He loves them. One of his most favorite things, I would say. But if you want something you can lug around with you - inside and outside the house, what have you - I'd recommend and Ultimate Ears speaker. We have 3 of them between us, one lives in my travel backpack, one lives in our camper van, and we have an extra that just wanders around our house. They also have great sound quality and they're super easy to use. I CANNOT BELIEVE YOU (YOU!!) HAVEN'T SEEN THE KIERA KNIGHTLY VERSION!!!!!! Completely shocked. It's such a good version of it - she's stunningly beautiful and ethereal and Matthew McFayden is surly and tortured and gorgeous. And Rosamund Pike! Jena Malone, and baby Carey Mulligan!! UGH! And Donald Sutherland - dear lord that cast. See it. So good.

I cannot wait for you to experience the movie WITH the most gorgeous soundtrack ever written, which scenes and stunning visuals go with the music! You’ll need to tell us ALL YOUR REACTIONS!

If you are set up with Apple devices, the home pod or home pod mini are great speakers. Useless if you don’t have Apple tech tho. We have a mini in nearly every room making it a nice vibe. I had sonos speakers for my record player but they were unreliable, returned for Edifier which makes my vinyl sound amazing!

Do you think watching Pride and Prejudice for the first time in a Incredibox theater would feel different than watching it at home? Would it make your "bewitched body and soul" moment more intense?

For an on the go portable speaker I would go with Bose. That my go to portable speaker. IN house system is Sonos. All the Ba daaaaaa, ba da da da- ing included.

I'm in the camp that thinks the BBC version is the BEST by far so I am not judging you! But enjoy your Austen experience:)

Well I've never seen it! So yes, I think the big screen will be more intense. :)

This is exactly the kind of Friday flotsam I needed. The bracket talk is pure nostalgia. That Arkansas overtime loss by a single point after holding such an intense lead is heartbreaking; they really were the Cinderella for a heartbeat. I am curious how your Final Four prediction of Duke over Michigan State ages as the tournament unfolds. It is nice to read a post that feels like chatting with a friend about basketball and life. Posts like this are why I keep coming back to duckpark's fun weekly reads.

Okay first — Sonos or Bose? For moving around the house, yard, and picnics, go Bose SoundLink Flex: waterproof, pool-proof, and plenty loud. (And yes, I can hear the "ba da da da" — you're not headed for the funny farm, your speaker just lost its harmony section, which is somehow worse.) Also: I've somehow never seen the Keira Pride & Prejudice either, so when I heard it's coming back to theaters I got tickets immediately. See you in the Jane Austen bubble. Good luck wallpapering this weekend! I did my dining room last fall, and my one tip is to take lots of photos. When I shared the reveal, my before/after shots kept getting cropped on Instagram stories and losing the edges of the room. I use a free in-browser image stretcher (imagestretcher.io) that adjusts width and height independently, so the whole room fills the story frame without distortion — no uploads anywhere either. Can't wait to see yours — may the wallpaper paste gods be with you!
