Friday Flotsam

Frrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

I need to get back into pies!

Lit-rally hadn’t planned on typing those words until they just came out of my fangies.

Tell me something, and this is going to sound so silly, but (and I could google this but you’re cuter) are chess pies (like the word CHESS) the word I’m looking for to describe not creamy pies?

Horrific sentence, let me try again.

Chess pies are the opposite of cream-based pies, right? Is chess the word I’m looking for to describe the . . . the grit (that’s not it) of the pie? Like the filling is not smooth. It’s got texture and personality. Is that chess?

Ugh, I’ll look it up.

One sec.

Okay I don’t think it is. I can’t even figure out what a chess pie is. Custard? Check mate?

SEE, I’m wanting to make a pie with texture in it. Not apple, not cream. What I want in my life is a coconut chocolate pie. The coconut is the grit. The chocolate is the sass. Like THIS ONE that I made long long ago (read that story while you’re at it) but with chocolate in it. Is there such a thing? I guess I could just add chocolate chips to the one above? Is it that simple? Stop looking at me like that.

Anyway, I want to get back into making pies and I need you to give me some filling ideas.

Also what is a chess pie?

POOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLAAAAAAAH:::

And please, be gentle with this. Be kind. Let’s keep the comments friendly and loving and uplifting to one another. (I have you worried, don’t I?)

Okay, something I’ve been thinking about, but can’t decide if it’s the right decision IS: should we move our TV to above the fireplace? Reason I ask is (hear me out before you come at me like an angry tsunami), we need more living room seating. As the kids get older, the amount of kid flow through this house on a weekly basis has exponentially grown. And will keep growing. These peeps need a place to hang, bruh.

If I move the TV to above the fireplace, I could use that whole wall and slap a vintage sofa or loveseat against it, and obviously rearrange the leather sofa back to the other wall. I can picture it. I can. I can rearrange the plants below the TV and figure out a cool end table for doo-dads.

I know there are pros and cons to this. Lots of people don’t want their electronics right above a heat source. I get that. And I do love the look of my chunky gold mirror and the 14 bazillion gold candle sticks right there. It’s a vibe. It is.

So I’m torn. Leave as is and figure it out another seating plan? Or do the swap? This won’t happen ANYTIME soon because you know it involves heavy lifting and planning on both Aaron’s and my part, so expect a decision to be made somewhere around 2029.

What would you do? (Be nice!)

Books and podcasts update!

Okay, I listened to Season One of To Live and Die in LA (the Adea Shabani one. ugh, so good. so sad.) and also Season Three of Suspect (Five Shots in the Dark). WHOA. Over halfway through Season TWO of To Live and Die in LA (the Elaine Parks one) and I’m hooked. It’s better than Season One in my opinion. Tell me what I need to listen to after this one!

Also, I’m about a third of the way through Pineapple Street and I totally dig it. Not TOO much has happened just yet, and I’m trying to tell if this book goes in a sinister direction, or if it’s just purely an elite family under a microscope, but I love the writing. I finished None of This is True and I BEG YOU to add to cart and devour. Holy moly. That needs to be a movie. Next up in my queue is The Only One Left and I’m suuuuuuuper pumped.

What are you reading?!

I just got Wordle in two tries. That’s my middled aged morning flex for you.

Weekend plans?

Today the high is SIXTY, so I’ll be slapping on a trench coat (<—did you see my reel on trenches yet?) and hitting estate sales for Halloween costume garb and inspo for my living room shelf redo. (you know I always need a project) A happy hour/playdate with a friend after school today, tacos for dinner, early soccer game tomorrow (I’m in charge of snacks!), ten miles to run, Halloween decor to get up out front, chili for dinner, and a fun day in Weston, MO with our friends on Sunday! Gonna stroll through some vendors, hear some live music, eat an apple or 80. You know how we do.

From this week!::: Your October mixtape! It’s all 1950s so just get into that vibe and be swell. Also we have a very simple anytime dinner with Creamy Penne with Spinach and Sundried Tomatoes! Just excellent. Listen while you cook that dinner. Truuuuust.

Should I make a blazer reel next?

TV above a fireplace isn’t controversial. If space is an issue, do it. But if you have a really high fireplace it may be uncomfortable to look up at it. And whatever you do, don’t tilt TV down. That looks worse. Get a good bracket you can pull or til when necessary. Another option depending on your room is to put it on side of fireplace. Not sure if you have book cases built in. This looks great too and you can put TV lower at a correct height.

I think you’ll like the seating more than you’ll dislike the placement of the tv. Your trench coat reel is so fun! I loved it. And 👌🏻 on this month’s playlist. Loving it. I haven’t made the pasta dish but it’s on next week’s plan.

Loved the trench coat reel, I’m on the hunt now for a good one. I think a blazer reel is definitely worth doing next. A good podcast rec for you - Up and Vanished! I loved to Live and Die in LA, but Up and Vanished is my fave of all time! Payne Lindsey has the best voice and storytelling style.

Wrote down Up and Vanished, thank you!

Chess pie is basically the texture of pecan pie filling. But you've probably already looked it up. We make a coconut cream pie that is divine, and we made it better by spreading a ganache over the crust and letting it chill before adding the coconut filling. Sooooooo yummy. I am in AZ, where it is going to be 104 today, visiting my parents and can't wait to get back to KC tonight for the cooler weather! Can't advise you on the tv. I, too, could benefit from moving it over the fireplace to get more seating, but I just can't do it. Where would the plants that sit on top of our tv armoire and mantel go so my cats can't eat them? Plus, as you can probably tell by the fact that it fits in an armoire, our tv is small, and would probably look ridiculous over the mantel.

Ah haaaaa, thanks for the chess info!

I don't care for TVs over the fireplace. I think that space should be reserved for a lovely painting or mirror, a statement piece that is classy. We have 6 fireplaces in our house and none have a TV over them!🤣 Could you make the basement more child friendly and ship them down there? Meanwhile, someone I follow posted a clip from tiktok or something with people mixing jelly into peanut butter and freezing it in a log so they could slice it and slap on bread! Needless to say- I thought of you and the frozen PB slice debacle😉😆.

Hahahaha! That damn frozen PB slice will never die. ;)

If you hate the idea of the TV over the fireplace, re-do the basement area into a place for them to hang out. Choose candlesticks over supervision! Just kidding...kind of.

Hahaha! We do the have the basement set up to hang! But I'm also semi worried about that. ;)

I failed your podcast rule. I googled Dr. Bob. I just wanted to see what he looked like and then of course I knew the end. Now I need to know how he got caught because his solution seems relatively foolproof.

We have a smallish living room and a half finished basement. Moved the tv to basement (rather than above the fireplace) and a cheap couch and some random chairs that we don’t care if the kids trash. Won’t ever go back to having in living room. We don't watch tv much and it’s so much better than having a tv be the focal point of a room. Or you could look into a picture frame art tv for above the mantle too!

See I love the IDEA of that, but the reality is, this family watches TV and movies a lot. And this living room is where we want to be because it's so lovely up here. I dooooo love the idea of a frame TV though. So it's both entertainment AND art when it's off. That's been in the back of my mind for a while. Thanks for the tip!

When fall weather starts, so does my pie making crave. No opinion on the TV situation but I do have a book recommendation. I am reading Horse, by Geraldine Brooks and it is so good! I'm about half-way through it and I'm already pretty sure that it will be my favorite book of 2023.

I guess I don't really know what your living room situation is like currently. Can you do some pics?

None of This is True was so good! Hard to read at times but I flew through it trying to figure out what happened! And that ending! Ugh. Adding The Only One Left to my TBR
