Friday Flotsam

Frrrrrrrrrrrrriiiiiii’m back!! (flotsam, that is. it’s been a long time. never mind.)

Okay, I am desperate to know if any of you have ever been in an MLM. And let me be clear, this is not a diss! Not a criticism. I know for a tiny sliver of people, they’re actually lucrative and fit your lifestyle/personality.

But!

I listened to this podcast recently about the history of MLMs, the psychology of social status in the buyers, the corruption of it, the promises, and a few success stories. It was riveting. And like, MLMs have been around forever. I remember back in my mid-20s knowing a few people in Fayetteville working for an MLM, trying to get diamond status or something so that they could get a corvette. I was so confused by it all.

What are your MLM stories? What did you sell? Leggings? Makeup? ESSENTIAL OILS? But more important, why did you leave? What made you walk away? (if you did walk away.) I find these personal stories beyond engrossing. And again, I’m not making fun of it. I genuinely want to know what happened, if was a smashing success (I have a friend who did reaaaaally well at one a few years back), or if it was a big lesson.

Spill all!

You guys, I cannot get my glasses sparkling clean.

WHAT am I doing wrong? No matter what, everything comes out milky and spotty and stupid. And yes, I use the little dark blue liquid in the tiny slide cup thingy in the dishwasher. Why the hell is everything so nasty?

Am I using the wrong brand? Do I need to be adding vinegar? Do I need to rub its back? Give it a pep talk?

Tell me what you use as far as dish detergent. I use Cascade powder but I’m thinking it might be time to switch. And the liquid glass stuff – what brand do you use? Tell me what to get because I’m on the verge of a mental breakdown.

And if you have any other tips for sparkling clean glasses. Give it a treat? A 401K?

I have the funniest story for you.

Well, funny and sad. But mostly funny, based on the delivery in said story.

The other night we watched Father of the Bride Part Two. They kids had never seen it, and were pushing for FOTB Part One, but I talked them into Two, because it’s fabulous, duh.

I said to them, “So in part one they get married, right? Guess what they get in part two.”

And Nat goes, “Divorced!”

“What? NO, Nat. PREGNANT. They get pregnant. Divorced? What on earth, no. But that hilarious. And kind of sad.”

Also, they could not believe Nina Banks got pregnant, too. Agreed. And I can’t believe that’s how a mid-40s woman was portrayed back then. Nina Banks can do no wrong, let that be clear.

But cooooome on.

WAIT! Look what I just yoinked from Google::

In the 1991 film Father of the Bride, Diane Keaton’s character Nina Banks is in her mid-40s. In the sequel, Father of the Bride Part II, Keaton’s character is 50 years old and pregnant. Keaton reportedly turned down the role after reading the screenplay, saying it was “a little too ridiculous”. Nancy Meyers and Keaton’s co-stars eventually convinced her to play pregnant.

Okay I didn’t realize she was 50 in the sequel. I have weird feelings right now.

…….

Last Saturday before Easter, Aaron brought home a little clear sack from the grocery store bakery with an assortment of bagels in it. And I said to him, with an honest sack of giddy, “Oooooooo things just got exciting!”

I officially need a life.

Weekend plans?

First of all, HOW IS YOUR BRACKET? 50% of my Final Four is correct. I have UConn winning the whole thing on Monday night. How about you?

It’s going to be a fabulous weekend. Highs in the 60s and 70s. I’m moving out plants, getting seeds in different beds, watching lots of basketball, hanging with mom friends, watching our first spring soccer game, lounging on the back patio with my book (still reading Demon. It’s a beast!), watching my niece’s volleyball tournament, and maybe a trip to the garden center. Definitely a trip to the garden center.

From the last few weeks::: (Saddle up) Creamy Pappardelle with Peas and Prosciutto. And that video! Your April mixtape. An indie rock ocean. Then we have some No-Knead Cinnamon Raisin Bread! And a video to go with it. Then a Book Club post! Don’t miss that one. Also some Blackened Tilapia Sandwiches. SO GOOD. That video for ya.

Okay – glassware gurus – tell me your secrets. Also MLMers, I need the deets!

I’ve missed this.

I grew up without a dishwasher and our glasses never got filmy. Now I find really old ones eventually do and it must be something in the dishwasher process. Not sure what the answer is, other than handwashing... No idea what and MLM is.

Handwashing is the way to go. My dishwasher has been broken since I bought my house and sometimes it gets old washing by hand but I’ll tell anyone that will listen, I bet my dishes are cleaner than any dishwasher will get them!

Not me, but my sister drank the essential oil kool aid for a bit. It wasn’t for long and coincidentally disappeared when she decided to go back to school to become a genius engineering student.

So glad Flotsam is baaack! One of my favorite reads of the week. For the dishwasher, have you cleaned the filter? May also try running a cleaning cycle with Affresh. This weekend I will be trying to install our replacement Instahot that died. Wish me luck! Have a great weekend!

YES! Miele are the best/and I cut in half. Too much soap is a culprit in so many issues.

Lime Away helps with the Glasses! But it's For Sure the Cascade. We Will Never Buy it Again.

I keep a small container in my dishwasher and fill it with vinegar every time I run it. It makes such a difference! Also, I’ve done MLMs and loved it. Was pretty successful at one and then during the pandemic it just felt too overwhelming so I stopped actively selling, but still earn a monthly paycheck.

Multi-level-marketing! They've been around for decades. Also called "direct sales." AKA: pyramid scheme.

A woman I met years ago had worked with crystal, glassware, etc., and back then she told me that over time, something in dishwasher soap actually ate away the surface of glassware making it milky and dull. My mom had Fostoria glasses that she and my dad used daily and they were washed in the dishwasher. I have those glasses now and they are very milky and not attractive at all but I can't get rid of the dang things because they are a memory from my childhood.

I have lived places that had hard water and the glasses got milky...the calcium in the water "etched" the glass...don't know if that is your problem where you live...

Demon is a heck of a read - absolutely loved the audiobook - not my usual choice but after I started reading it, a long drive made me think to try to finish it on the road and it was really good !!!!
