Friday Flotsam

FridaYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

flowers, gremlins, feet

Remember in old movies, how the dude would passionately take the gal by the waist, and kiss up her arm? Like, he’d start at her hand with tiny smooches, and make his way up her entire arm with kisses? Remember that? And it was pretty dramatic, too, like super Frenchy, or Oklahoma! Or the Addams Family.

“My dawwwling!” *smooch smooch smooch at the wrist* “You are so stunning tonight!” *smooch smooch smooch up her forearm* “I must haaave you!” *smooch smooch smooch all the way up. And the lady be like, YAWN.

What is that? Where did that come from? No one kisses up the arm anymore! Not in CARTOONS, not in MODERN MOVIES, no where. Why did this arm kissing thing just vanish? We must know.

I miss the olden days.

wet leaves on the windowshield

Speaking of movies, we are six days into our annual Halloweidner Scary Spooky Movie Marathonapalooza Fest! I know we’ve talked about this year after year (AFTER YEAR, you want to punch me), but we clearly need to discuss it again.

Of course we’ll watch the classics closer to Halloween. (like Poltergeist, The Shining, The Changeling, Halloween, etc etc.) BUT – what I need from you is a list of newer scary movies to watch.

So far we’ve seen Little Evil (mostly fun and funny and Adam Scott, hi,), Hotel Transylvania (cute! fun. kids dug it.), and Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (also cute. fun. kids dug it.)

And we start every day with It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. Every day. Errr.dang.day.

But! Give me something new and pants wettingly terrifying to watch. Doesn’t have to be kid-friendly, either.

Actually, I still think Paranormal Activity is THEE most crippling movie I’ve ever watched. Ever. Gore doesn’t even compare. Because that freaking supernatural moment in the middle of the night with the giant alien devil footprints at the bedroom threshold and the sheet being pulled away and her BODY BEING DRAGGED AWAY FROM THE ROOM? No. WHAT. No.

No.

I’ll never ever watch that mess again.

But I need something exactly like it. Ugh.

gremlins in nature

Listen to what Nat said last night.

She goes, “Mom, is this my right hand?” (waving her soft little right hand in the air.) “Yep! That’s your right hand.”

“Is this my left hand?” (bringing up her left hand with a little finger wiggle accompaniment) “Yep! That would be your left hand. Good job.”

Her, “Well, where’s my straight hand?”

*whoa* *what a cool question* *this is your chance, mom* *really blow her mind here* *fuel that imaginative fire*

Found myself blurting out, “Elves took it!”

Child therapy’s not expensive, is it?

**Fashion Gab**

Oh, I should totally start a new section in here called Fashion Gab. But I already hate the title, so let me keep thinking on this.

But! You wanna know what shoe is absolutely taking over my life right now? MULES.

(Not to be confused with me wanting a donkey on my foot.)

Flat mules. I can’t get enough of them. I want 55 million pairs. I just ordered these from Amazon and they’re brilliant. And only $40! LOOP HOLE IN THE LIFE SYSTEM, you guys.

And these from Everlane have me so weepy. Aren’t they stunning? Guuuuh.

I also have these coming from Amazon, so we’ll see if they look barfy hideous in person, or surprisingly cute.

Are you into mules? I’ve never said those words in my entire life.

gremlins at the nelson

Weekend plans?

We’re taking it super easy tonight and tomorrow, becauuuuuse I’m hopping on an early flight Sunday morning and heading to Vermont! VERMONT IN THE FALL. It’s always always always been a dream of mine to visit Vermont in fall, and it’s seriously finally happening. Vermont! You guys remember the T.V. show back in the ’80s – Newhart? Dick and Joanna Loudon and Stephanie and Michael and Larry and Darryl and Darryl at the Stratford Inn?! “Hi, I’m Larry. This is my brother Darryl. And this is my other brother Darryl.” VERMONT! I’m not going there, though. I’m headed to Burlington.

Vermont! I’ll take you with me, pigeon. Dunchew worry.

First of all... My family loves all things Wallace and Gromit. Oh, and Shaun the Sheep. Scary movies are my jam, and not my hubs so I don't get to see many of them anymore. BUT back when we watched all things scary (we were dating, he was trying to impress me with his bravery), the movie that scared me more than anything I had ever seen was "The Ring". Legit crawled on his lap and hid myself in his coat and watched through a gap in the buttons. When that stupid girl crawls out of the stupid TV. Done. Watch "Gerald's Game" on Netflix. Not super scary, but a good thriller. Hush (I had to turn it off, it was weirding me out), VVitch, 10 Clovefield Lane.

If you love/hate "Paranormal Activity," watch "Insidious." It gave me that same scared-to-death-in-a-good-way feeling.

The conjuring (1 and 2). So scary and good acting so it seems really real and possible.

I think the arm kissing ended when everyone became germ-o-phobic. I have always said that The Addams family showed the healthiest relationship of all time. They loved each other madly, showed it regularly and NEVER seemed to pick on each other. I mean, a good joke with your husband is always fun, but they really had it together. SURE they weren't conventional, but that was the point - they were the freaks but really they pointed how that 'normal' people were even more messed up than they were. I really need to chill out with the psych 101 of Addams Family, don't I? Hmm I still think the scariest movies are Fire in the Sky (I HATE ALIEN MOVIES LIKE THIS) and Deliverance (so scary because it could really happen). Most other horror films don't bug me unless it's aliens... or scary backwoods people. I do enjoy The Evil Dead series. Those are campy, fun, creepy but also a bit funny. And a bit out there.

Agree with The Conjuring! (Though I've only seen 1). Also, I might have to order those $40 pretties. They were so cute on you the other night. I did make a FB or Twitter post a few years ago saying someone should knock me off if I were ever spotted in bootcut jeans and mules, but so I'm glad bootcut jeans never really made the comeback they were poised to make (and I've been wearing clog mules with skinnies and mom jeans for years). Mules with my cropped mom jeans? Fine, okay.

Well, dear. I don't have a scary movie for you. Hang on...let me text my teens. Hold please....yes, my teen says The Conjuring is on the list of all-time scary. :) Happy Friday and can't wait to see your Vermont pics/stories. Our 20th wedding anniversary is coming up and we still haven't planned anything! We might have to do a last minute trip if it looks amazing. I've always wanted to road trip through that part of the country in the fall. Have fun!

The Conjuring! Parts 1 and 2! I watch the first one way too often and it leaves me unable to sleep every.sinlge.time. And the nun in the second one (shivers). Eeeek. Also, It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown forever and ever!!!!

Have a great time in Vermont-I'm biased about the state because I live in Vermont! It's a really great place to live and super-dee-duper-dee beautiful in the fall. Enjoy!

Favorite recent-ish scary movies: The Babadook, It Follows, Cabin in the Woods, The Witch.

Have you seen Vacancy with Luke Wilson? I'll never watch it again.

To be honest, I am pretty much a baby when it comes to scary movies. So, getting me to watch one is a pretty big deal and it has to be worth it (translation: I haven't seen many). BUT! I did see "Get Out" recently and that was soooo worth it. If you want a funny/scary movie "Tucker and Dale vs. Evil" on Netflix is pretty good. I also tentatively recommend "Dark Signal" on Netflix. I say tentatively because there were some parts that were a little "Come on! eye roll" and I am still confused on a couple parts.

The Strangers .... it's terrifying! The Conjuring and Insidious movies are really good too.

Bev, I am soo far removed from any type of scary movie, but my man will sometimes indulge HIS desire for creepy(scary) film viewing and he said Get Out was creepy in the best way, and funny too. Not like super pee your pants kinda freakfest but maybe a nice break from that stuff while still being on theme? in other news. yes mules. oh also. I went to college just over the border from Burlington! in NY. spent lots of time in VT in the summah, they have killer festivals. its glorious and luscious and your eyeballs may fall out with the gorgeousness that is fall there. have a great time! say hi to Ben and Jerry!

Question: are mules hard to walk in? I seem to remember owning some the last time they came on the scene and I had a hard time keeping them on my feet. Those $40 ones look wonderful but hesitant to order if I have to walk while scuffing my feet along to keep them on! Vermont is on my bucket list!

Love the everlane mules! They look like an expensive sprorts car for your feet! The barfly ones tho.... I know that colour online ... comes very orangey! Good luck tho!

I absolutely love scary movies, too, and just came across "The Houses that October Built" on Netflix and it's totally different than most but creeped me out like whoa. Don't watch the second one, though, that one was lame. And as far as I'm concerned, you ain't cool unless you mule. (generally referring to moscow mules, but still)

I love the arm kissing thing and also vote to bring it back! I usually stay away from scary movies and don't watch very many but my bf tricked me into watching an old classic gothic horror film called The Night of the Hunter, starring Robert Mitchum (swoon! except in this film he was terrifying!) It was phenomenal. So creepy, so scary, and so good. A really beautiful film too - highly recommend!
  19. Danielle October 10, 2017 at 7:33 pm #
Scary movie suggestions: Coraline - it's a tim burton animated film but it really creeped me out Get Out The loved ones - my husband enjoys horror....he said this movie kept him awake all night. Hope you had a wonderful time in Vermont. xx

meant to read as - Coraline, Get Out and The loved ones.
  20. Bee October 12, 2017 at 10:10 am #
That part of Paranormal Activity was when she just stood by the bed and watched her husband sleep for like....3 hours? Nuh. Uh. I was done. I adore Coraline. Probably supposed to be a kids movie? But my kids are terrified of it. And even I think its pretty eerie. Also, its not a movie, but I had to quit watching the first season of American Horror Story. Toooooo tooooo creepy. Also not a movie, but the Lore podcast episode about Robert the Doll gave me actual, real-deal NIGHTMARES. I was on edge for like a week.
  21. Cat October 16, 2017 at 6:10 am #
Definitely Hush, it's quite jumpy but not that gory and very satisfying to watch. My favourite 'horror'/thriller film and I am BAD with horror films, they all give me nightmares but not this one, it's just great.
