Do little kids still get up at the fanny crack of dawn to watch Saturday morning cartoons?

THAT WAS SUCH A THING.

My little sister and I would wake up at like, 3am, super jazzed about the Smurfs, then realize it was still pitch dark outside, and force ourselves to sleep for another three grueling hours, until we could get up and try again. Then! – we’d piiiiile the blankets and pillows on the living room floor carpet, vanish into a mound of fabric and feathers, and watch 17 hours of cartoons until my parents opened their bedroom door between and 7 and 8am. THAT IS WHAT WE LIVED FOR. We waited the entire week for that morning. WERK.

Please tell me kids still do this. Mine are too young for this era. Matter of fact, my kids still STAY.IN.BED. until we come and get them. And they sleep in! If you think 8am is sleeping in. They’re basically living their best life.

Back in the day we’d watch::::

The Smurfs (I lived for that show)

Rainbow Brite (Fun fact: I was the voice for the 2009 series theme song. YES THAT IS ME.)

TOM AND JERRY (we measured time with Tom and Jerry shows. “How much longer until we get there?” “Three more Tom and Jerrys! Shut your pie.”)

Pee Wee’s Playhouse (just love me)

Care Bears (don’t x out)

Wuzzles (RIGHT??)

SAVED BY THE BELL (long live Kelly Kapowski and Zack Morris)

Tell me what you watched! I know I’m forgetting a zillion cartoon faves. (not favs)

I miss the ’80s.

And I’m hyper right now.

tree trunk

I’m going to ask you the most cliché question of all time.

That’s me. A walking cliché.

But I genuinely want to know!

Only because I was asked this in a recent interview, and the answer flew out of my face so fast it startled me. Then made me hungry.

If you were stuck on a deserted island, what food would you/could you eat for the rest of your life? THE REST OF YOUR LIFE. One food.

Go.

(mine’s pizza. a bit on the thin side, but not cracker thin. i still want heft to it. but not too doughy. to where you hold it up and it doesn’t droop down into the pits of despaaaair. (<–name that movie) and it would be super if it had Italian sausage and pepperoni on it. but the pepperoni should be the big ones, and cut on the diagonal. and maybe some spinach on it, too. for health. i’m starving.)

13 episodes left of Dawson.

You’re like, “HURRY UP ALREADY.”

Foundation shirts

GALS.

You know I’ve blabbed about Mr. Davis a time or two in the past. Well, the time has (finally!) come where they’re about to put out women’s shirts. Yes those are the bells of heaven being rung by diapered baby cherubs that you hear in your soul chamber.

It’s called Foundation, and it’s the brainchild of my two buds, Jeremy and John, who run Mr. Davis. It’s all in Kickstarter mode right now, but I just had to share it with you because a lot of you ask me where I get my basics. The timeless pieces. And these are UNREAL. They’re that crazy soft bamboo viscose material that feels like you just put buttered feathers all over your torso. And look! Zero color. All neutrals. I feel like we should fist bump.

I tried them all on yesterday and I already know my favorite’s going to be the nude scoop and v-neck. I want 67 of them.

Nice work, John and Jeremy! It’s ABOUT TIME YOU PUT OUT LADY SHIRTS.

I swear I’m not yelling at you.

I think.

Weekend plans?

This is the first weekend in a long time where we only have one event on the agenda. Sorry, that warrants !!! But the event involves cows and milk and a farm and our friends. So.

Also, we’re on the search for one of those yard statue fountain thingies that looks like a mix between the set of 1998’s Great Expectations and grandma’s junkyard. That’s all I had to say about that.

You still can’t get over me singing that awful Rainbow Brite song, can you?

I am very excited about the Mr. Davis guys now making women's items! My husband has some of their items courtesy of your blog contest last year (thanks again!), and he actually ordered more boxers after enjoying the giveaway ones so much. I'm always tempted to steal his undershirts because they are soooo soft.

Saturday morning cartoons were my jam!!! I loved Gummi Bears, Smurfs, Wuzzles (YES!!), Rainbow Brite (and I give you major, MAJOR cool points for singing that theme song! P.S. Was Starlite as much of a diva as I think he would be?), there were SO many great Saturday AM shows. I also ran home from the bus stop to watch He-man on the regular, every week day. I am obsessed cartoons! Yes, present tense. And Pee Wee was everything! Still is, FYI! That being said for some strange reason I also woke up early on Sundays, made my cereal and my mom would always come down to me watching church on television. Different church programs each week, I gave them all a whirl. Note: We didn't go to actual church, I just needed to get my fix. And enlighten myself! Pizza. Forever. And Ever. I actually ate pizza every day of my Senior year in HS. We had the choice. Reg lunch, pizza, bag lunch, or hot dog. I ate pizza. EVERY.SINGLE.DAY. Sometimes twice. My husband gets so burned out on 'zza. Whatever... it's amazing. Finally - that last photo of the kids is amazing!

There was a Jetsons/Flinstones hour - I can't remember if that was on the weekends or the weekdays. Cartoons were also motivation to get ready for school AS FAST AS POSSIBLE so we could plop down and watch 10 minutes of TV before carpool showed up.

I don't think kids do that anymore. When I did it (well before your time) it was because that was the ONLY day that showed cartoons all morning. You couldn't find any kid type shows during the weekday on the three channels we got. Major Astro was on after school. Sunday morning had Rocky and Bullwinkle but otherwise....nada. It's no longer a big deal. You can find whatever show you want whenever you want it.

Yep exactly! Only Sunday mornings and I think Saturday got added at some point. And of course no on demand or DVR back then. Now, kids (or adults) don't have to wait for much these days.

You rocked that Rainbow Brite song, Bev! Loved all of the above. I have to add Inspector Gadget and Strawberry Shortcake (the Peculiar Purple Pieman from Porcupine Peak!!!). On the flip side of 80s Saturday morning cartoons, did anyone else sneak to the living room in the night to watch GLOW? And then practice wrestling moves with their siblings? So excited Netflix is letting me relive it with the new show. Sadly, I'm too old to dive bomb from the couch now.

Cartoons now are soooooo different than cartoons in the 80's. Sad face. I was all about Rainbow Brite, Strawberry Shortcake, THE GET ALONG GANG!!!, The Littles, Jem, Carebears, and My Little Pony. I was forced to watch Transformers and a few others with my brother. I've been debating this food thing for a few minutes. That's such a hard decision, Bev! Maybe chicken fajitas. EEP! 15 episodes!!!

My 10&13 year old have been waiting for Saturday morning TV for years! They watch Tom & Jerry and Mickey Mouse and Full House, but also now that they're older Simpsons and Futurama are all the rave with teens. Crazy how shows change bc 13 years ago Spongebob was all my 8th grade students would watch and now it's watched by little little kids! Anyways...Smurfs, Tom & Jerry and that Wiley Coyote cartoon were my favorites!

Yes, to all of those cartoons! My mom still has my Rainbow Brite, Care Bear, Strawberry Shortcake, Smurfs, and Wuzzle toys at her house. I LOVED Saved by the Bell! My boys are 9 & 6 and we just have Netflix, so they don't have the Saturdays that I used to have. We went on an overseas flight last year and one of the TV show options was Tom & Jerry, which they loved, so they now watch that occasionally.

Ok, now for the waaaayyy back days... Saturday am was the only kid show day. (although we DID have the Mickey Mouse Club after school)...so we watched Rin-Tin-Tin, Buster Brown, Captain Midnight, Casper, Fury, and Winky Dink & You, that required us to get a plastic "screen" to paste over the tv screen and interact with the show by drawing bridges etc for Winky. Then...we went to the movie theater...25 cents to get in and we could bring in all the food we could carry in our brown paper grocery bag..watched the cartoon, then the serial, then the full length kid show, then the regular show, then the regular show AGAIN (because you could stay as long as you wanted). Those were the days...and what cheap babysitting for our parents!

1-OMG THE FACT THAT YOU SANG THAT RAINBOW BRITE SONG IS EPIC 2-My saturday morning cartoons were particularly a bit that used to air on abc (I think) called One Saturday Morning and it had like Recess, Pepper Ann...I dunno stuff. 3-desert island food....maybe good bread and butter? I feel like I'd never get tired of that lol.

School house rock! Electro woman & Dyna Girl, Dr. Shrinker, Land of the Lost, Scooby Doo! Island food would have to be either mashed potatoes, spaghetti or Salt & Vinegar potato chips!!

If I had to choose just one meal on a deserted island I'd choose mushroom risotto, however, if I were stuck on a desserted island I'd choose chocolate milkshakes... ;) My cartoon rotation was Loony Toons, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I really miss TGIF programming.
