Friday Flotsam

Frrrrrrrrrrrrrrrey! der! duh! dey!

Ya know what I’ve really been into lately? Let me preface this by saying you’ve all already been into this for years and years. I’m just (fashionably?) late to the party.

This is what I’m loving: fun podcasts. Like guest-based podcasts. Just two-four people chatting and gabbing and dishing and spilling tea and book talk and all that.

I’m taking a break from murder, you guys! (that came out wrong.)

And I have a few that I’ve been rotating that I want to share, but I knooooooow you all have the goods, and I’d love to hear them!

Books, Beach, & Beyond. It’s the Elin Hilderbrand and Tim Talks Books podcast. It’s my favorite. They interview well-loved authors about their process, their hits, all of it. It’s GREAT, if you love literary chat. I’m obsessed.

Another one that’s giving me a lot of joy these days is Good Hang with Amy Poehler. Gah! She’s just a freaking treat. I enjoy her so much. Her episode with Tina is pure gold. I just love hearing funny women together. Their adoration for each other, the way they treat people, their craft. Can’t get enough of that juice. (also came out wrong.)

Other ones I dabble in (based on the guest) are Call her Daddy, Armchair Expert, Smartless and Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend. Hysterical stuff. And we all need that right now.

But I need more! What are some hilarious, refreshing, guest-based podcasts that you cannot get through your week without?

Spilleth.

Okay, we need to have a quick baby micro discussion about tomato pie. I already have a blog post on it. This one. Make it. Do it. But I have a note. I have a note!

First of all it’s the perfect month to make it. And actually, not sure if you knew, but in an old version of the Latonia Perplexia from Yesterlore, the literal translation for August is Tomato Pie. You knew this, right? Well now you do.

But here’s something that’s sort of changing my game. And that’s to make the pie crust in my food processor. Now listen, global grandmothers will turn in their graves, and I agree and get it and understand. But the food processor – omg! It’s been making my pie dough so much smoother. More pliable. Easier to manage. Sure, it takes away the meditative motion of pressing the cold butter through your fingers, but girl. I’m sold.

I made this one for a little late-summer-football-watching hang last weekend and we almost died. The tomatoes are bursting with obscene flavor right now and you HAVE TO TAKE ADVANTAGE or I will rightly come after you.

That’s my PSA for today.

Also, I will never be able to manage Saran Wrap. Or any plastic wrap. Any cling wrap. I thought that years ago I’d managed to figure it out. And I think I did for a few days or hours. But it left right after and has yet to return.

The other day I had it so horrifically jacked up and it was getting worse and worse and I nearly threw the entire box onto the highway. Then Aaron came into the kitchen and started from scratch with the hurricane of plastic wrap on the counter, got it back on track, and I straight-up squealed with unbridled delight.

. . . I need to get out more.

Weekend plans?

Pretty low key around here, which is lovely. I’m about halfway through Wild Dark Shore (canNOT figure out what the family is hiding. I mean, I have an idea, but that can’t be right. Can it?), so I hope to churn that one out. A bit of yard work, an early soccer game, a friend’s birthday to celebrate, Taylor’s new album to dream over, some Chiefs watching, and that’s about it. Pawfect.

I didn’t post anything this week because I’m trying to get back into a work groove. The kids have started back to school, so juggling all their needs and wants and my needs and wants is a lot. But: my birthday is next Saturday and I’m seeing the Indigo Girls next Thursday night, so the vibes are high and the mood is right. I’m boarding the Good Vibe Train with a first class ticket and not getting off! (<–so, so sorry I said it like that.)

Okay, have a fab weekend and tell me your favorite podcasts!

Heather McMahan’s Absolutely Not podcast brings me sheer joy and laughter. The voicemails segment at the end is the best. Comedian Mike Birbiglia is a funny and amazing human and his podcast is also wonderful and often life affirming. But my #1 all time fave source of joy and laughter will always be Conan. 🩷

Normal Gossip podcast. Slightly different than what you're talking about, but guest based and HILARIOUS.

“You’re Wrong About”! Did Sarah Marshall single-handedly revive Tonya Harding’s reputation? And make us all re-examine 90s pop culture’s treatment of women in general? Maybe? 🤍

I love Armchair Expert—especially the Armchair Anonymous episodes. I literally laugh out loud in the most inappropriate places, constantly embarrassing my husband… especially on airplanes.

Podcrushed! They talk to celebrity guests about the middle school years and it makes for some very fun interviews with unique insights.

Good Hang is my favorite right now! I laughed the whole way to work listening to the Seth Myers episode.

Loving Goodhang as well. You might enjoy Julia Louis-Dreyfus Wiser than Me. She interviews women in the industry older than her and it is delightful.

Love how you’ve turned your Friday Flotsam space into a cozy chat podcasts with friends, shared stories, and all that good, comfortable “tea” really do feel like catching up over coffee. Reading this made me picture myself rocking a Carlos Alcaraz Wimbledon Championships 2025 T-Shirt chillin', listening, and finding joy in the little things.

It feels too obvious to mention but please tell me you watched New Heights podcast ( or listened, but watching is so much better in this situation) with Taylor. She talks about acquiring her masters and back story to meeting Travis. So so good!

Okay, first of all, this post is a whole mood. I’m right there with you on the podcast train—“Good Hang” with Amy Poehler? Pure serotonin. There’s just something about listening to funny, creative people riff that makes folding laundry almost enjoyable. (Almost.) Also, your tomato pie PSA is giving me life. August = tomato pie, it’s basically science. And the food processor crust hack? Grandmas everywhere may clutch their pearls, but I’m 100% here for it. Sometimes you gotta trade the meditative butter squish for sanity, ya know? Plastic wrap, though. Why is it the final boss of kitchen supplies? I swear mine is sentient and plotting against me. If anyone has a cheat code for that, drop it below. Weekend plans? Hoping for at least one nap, maybe some questionable karaoke, and definitely some tomato pie action. Vibes are high, snacks are ready, and I’m manifesting zero plastic wrap disasters. Happy Friday, and may your podcasts be hilarious and your pie crusts unbreakable!

Julian Opie: The Artist Who Turned Minimal Lines Into Global Icons When you first see a Julian Opie piece, you might think it looks almost too simple. Flat colours. Clean lines. No fuss. But then it hits you — this is the same style that has turned him into one of the most recognisable contemporary artists in the world.

I love this humorous and cheerful tone! 😄 Your anecdotes are natural, it feels like chatting with friends. The podcast recommendations make me want to listen to them, and the aside about tomato tart is just perfect! A fresh, funny, and very lively text.

This post totally captures the passion of Dodgers fans! If you love expressing team spirit through your outfit, the Maude Apatow Blue Jacket by Vanson Jackets is worth checking out. It’s comfortable, stylish, and the color is simply stunning.
