Friday Flotsam

Fraaaaaaiiiiiieeeeedaaaaaiiiiiieeeeee. (<—-?)

Pots and pots and pots.

Well, it’s over. Parenthood wrapped up their epic tear-inducing series with yet another epic tear-inducing finale. WARNING! SPOILERS! If you’ve not yet watched last night’s finale P-Hood, skip to the next paragraph! I don’t want haters.

Ugh, that endiiiiiing. I need to go back and watch it 58,245 more times on Hulu. But just the last five minutes. You know how they do. I loved that it had a slight Six Feet Under-style wrap, with the glance into the future. Minus the whole, everybody dying thing. Besides Zeke. I kept wondering, “Will he collapse at the wedding!? Will he fall down dancing at the reception?!” But no. Peacefully in his chair. You know how Camille sucked in those three little breaths when she saw him? Killeth me-eth.

I liked seeing Ryan one last time. Knowing he’s in the picture, looking pretty dang fine, yet cordial with Amber’s new fam. She had two kids, right? I could barely see through my tear blur.

I LOVED seeing Jasmine’s belly in the studio. LOVED seeing Julia holding anooooother baby while the three kids discovered their Christmas puppy. LOOOOVED seeing Max show just a teensy inkling of tenderness with Nora during a brief hug. Loved seeing Haddie at all. She’s hot, man. I loved that they ended the whole thing right where it started. On the baseball field. With everyone in celebratory spirits. Ohhh good here come the tears again.

But I’ll tell you what I didn’t love. Hello, that crustache on Drew in the beginning of the episode. Looking a little murdery there, son.

Now that it’s all over, I have to figure out what to do with my life. I’m thinking red lipstick.

DIY peppermint toothpaste!

You’ll never guess what’s in that little jar there. Never guess. Nevah evah. So I’ll just tell you. Toothpaste! I found this crazy easy recipe the other day, and you’ll flip when you hear what’s in it. Baking soda, coconut oil, peppermint essential oil, and salt. But listen, the salt was optional, and I will say, next time I’m not putting it in. It’s pretty disturbingly salty. But overall I’m into this natural method!

I even jumped on the coconut oil gargling bandwagon and gargled a good ten minutes while making this. Do you do that? The whole oil pulling thing? I swear, it’s a thing. I’m not oil pulling your leg!

Sardines with mustard on crackers

The babies had their first taste of sardines this week. You’re either super impressed or running to the bathroom with your hand over your mouth in a slur of profanities. They loved it!

I’ve been a sardine lover for some time now, especially on a grainy cracker with a tiny dollop of stone-ground mustard. It’s so good! Not fishy at all. Just oceany. You can even grill the little suckers, and lay them atop a mound of lemony linguine, with heaps of fresh parsley and parmesan. Deeeeuuuummm.

Okay I’m done now. You can come out of the bathroom.

breakfast. yes.

I wrote a little piece on gender clichés and parental projections on the What to Expect blog. It’s live! On their website. My article. You can find it here. And here. And over there. Just kidding those are all the same links. You’re this close to punching me in the face.

winter trees

I need book suggestions! Yes yes, last week it was workouts, this week it’s books. I basically need you to tell me how to live my life.

What are you reading right now that you are obsessed with? Can’t put it down? Page page page turn turn turn. I’m way into authors like Gillian Flynn, Emily Giffin, etc. Hook it up! I want to start a new book this weekend, so I’m COUNTING ON YOU. No pressure.

Okay let’s go watch Parenthood again.

i'm currently reading Three Wishes by Liane Moriarty. it's actually one of her older books, so perhaps you've read it, but if not, i highly recommend it! i have read several of her books and loved them all...this one does not disappoint! also just read The One and Only by Emily Giffin...can't heartily endorse it, sadly, but it's a decent read. next up: The Girl On the Train...i've heard it's awesome in the way Gone Girl is...definitely a page-turner.

I'm reading an oldie but a goodie. I know this much is true by Wally Lamb. It's about twin boys. And their mother. And their grandfather. I'm crying.

Have you read anything by Jonathan Tropper?! His book "This is Where I Leave You" was just made into a movie with Jane Fonda and Tina Fey and I saw it two times in the theater and then bought the dvd the day it came out because I have no self control. ANYWAY, his books are amazing. Two of my favorites are 'How to Talk to a Widower' (it's not as sad as it sounds!) and 'Plan B'. Happy Friday! :)

Almost spit my coffee out..."But I’ll tell you what I didn’t love. Hello, that crustache on Drew in the beginning of the episode. Looking a little murdery there, son." When that part came on I was like CHRIS WTF IS THAT????????? And then I continued to ugly cry. And, uh...hello, Ryan at the end? I'm going to start re-watching PH from the beginning and pretend it's a brand new show. Come join me! If you haven't read Andie Mitchell's "it was me all along"...you need to!!!! !!!!!! !!!! (got it?)

SEE, I watched the entire thing last year when the babies were infants! Best decision of my life. Where do we go from here? I. . . have no clue.

I was so excited to here what your thoughts on Parenthood were. You noted all the things I loved! I had to keep pausing and rewinding to figure out who all the new babies were. I just got a little choked up typing this. Question - Is there a particular brand of sardines that you prefer? I have never tried them but am interested.
    • Bev Weidner January 31, 2015 at 8:43 am #
The brand I used this time was Season, and it said Brisling on the blue packaging. Right around 4 bucks. Try it!
  7. Jess January 30, 2015 at 9:31 am #
I just started "Wild" by Cheryl Strayed and am LOVING it!
  8. Shaina January 30, 2015 at 10:00 am #
    1. I make my own toothpaste. I fully support this move. 2. Sardines are the bomb-dot-com. Adding that pasta to my menu for next week. 3. Right now I'm reading Station Eleven, which is delightful. Definitely worth reading. I have All the Light We Cannot See on deck. You should check out Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng. Murdery mystery, family drama.

I cannot contribut to a conversation on sardines or P-Hood, but I can when it comes to books! "Heroes Are My Weakness" by Susan Elizabeth Phillips (I love her!), this one in particular I couldn't put down. Read it, if you haven't yet. If you like Emily Giffin, have you tried Jill Mansell or Katie Fforde? Both are British chick-lit authors, but I love them! Jill Mansell has a new book out called "Three Amazing Things About You" (I am buying and downloading today as a belated b-day gift to myself). Some of her other works that I like are "To The Moon and Back" and "Millie's Fling" but there are so many more! As for Katie Fforde, her books make me laugh out loud! Try "Highland Fling," "Wedding Season" or "Love Letters." As I page through my GoodReads lists, I found another author (last one I promise!): Cathrine McKenzie. Her books are a little quirky but make for a great read. Nothing serious, but you feel like her characters could be real people. "Arranged" was the first book I read and it made me want to read more of her works. Give them a try! Happy reading!

I've been reading books by Lisa Regan lately. I've read Finding Claire Fletcher and Aberration and I thought they were both really good. I'm now reading Hold Still, but I'm not very far into it yet, so I can't give an opinion yet. They are both suspenseful. As for Parenthood, I'm so glad that they didn't dwell on his death. I'm glad he just went peacefully in his chair at home. I loved the way they wrapped it up. It was what I was hoping for. I wanted to see them a little bit down the road and see what had came of them. As for Drew's mustache, I said the same thing! lol

The Girl on the Train. And Divergent (geared towards teens, yes, but gooooooood).
  12. Simone January 30, 2015 at 11:43 am #
Just read Jennifer Weiner's "All Fall Down" and am currently reading {DON'T LAUGH!} "Four" by Veronica Roth - an addition to the Divergent series. I started Goldfinch but couldn't get into it...
  13. Lynda H January 30, 2015 at 11:44 am #
I have just finished and loved Graeme Simsion's The Rosie Project and The Rosie Effect. And have started a mystery series by Aimee Thurlo about a motorcycle-riding nun set in New Mexico: Bad Faith is book #1

  15. Ashley January 30, 2015 at 12:07 pm #
Have you read any of JoJo Moyes books? If not, your next read has to be Me Before You. It just has to be.
  16. Racquel Jones January 30, 2015 at 12:17 pm #
Still Alice is a great book. Also, Desperate, by Sarah Mae is great!
  17. Christine January 30, 2015 at 12:43 pm #
I just read The Girl on the Train and it was good!! Also, The Dirty Life by Kristen Kimball was great!! It's a memoir on farming, love and life. And What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty is another one I couldn't put down. Happy reading!!
  18. Jenn I January 30, 2015 at 1:23 pm #
Yay books! All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr, definitely. The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfeld Johnathan Tropper is hysterical I'll Give You the Sun by Jandy Newton (YA, but really fantastic)
  19. Stacy's mom January 30, 2015 at 2:09 pm #

We have totally put our girls in dino pjs, it's too cute not to! I'm kinda relieved Parenthood is over...it was such a rollercoaster!
  22. Natalie January 30, 2015 at 2:47 pm #
Parenthooooooood! Yes, Drew's creeper stache was awful!!! I read the director/producer's spill on the finale and he said that is Amber's hub's baby girl. They were both single parents and met at the park or something I dunno, Google it?! I've got one hand holding a soother in my daughters mouth while typing this otherwise I'd hook you up with the link (priorities during nap time!)
    • Bev Weidner January 30, 2015 at 4:04 pm #
Ohhhhhh that makes seeeeense! Looking it up now. :)
  23. Kelly January 30, 2015 at 3:51 pm #
If you like historical fiction then you should try the Outlander series, it's really good. They made a TV show out of it, which is reeeeally good too!
    • Erica February 6, 2015 at 2:24 pm #
I second outlander! I'm almost to the 4th book and loving it's epic historical fiction / slight sci fi / romance blend.
  24. Taylor January 30, 2015 at 6:09 pm #
Literally just finished Parenthood and have been crying since pretty much the beginning, such a great ending! As for books I'm currently reading The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton and I can't put it down.
  25. gary weidner January 30, 2015 at 6:52 pm #
All Joy, No Fun -- Jennifer Senior I just heard her on Freash Air tonight. She's amazing! Very funny, but with lots of studies to back her up. This should probably stay on your reference bookshelf throughout Will and Natalie's toddlerhood, kiddom, adolescence and beyond.
  26. Aysegul January 31, 2015 at 2:14 pm #
I am usually not a big fan of Jodi Picault books, but Leaving Time from Jodi Picault was pretty good.
  27. Alyssa February 1, 2015 at 7:11 am #
To echo Aysegul, I'm not a huge jodi picoult fan, but The Storyteller was one of the best books I've read in a while. It's an excellent read. Also, I had to watch Parenthood when I knew I'd be home alone since I might have alarmed those around me with the amount of crying I did during that episode.
  28. nicole @ I am a Honey Bee February 1, 2015 at 1:51 pm #
amber's boots REALLY ticked me off during the wedding ceremony. But the ending was great. Loved it!
  29. Katherine February 3, 2015 at 8:57 am #
Sooo. I few things. Drew's mustache... I am forever creeped. And ditto on all of your Parenthood commentary. Just, ditto. I was way behind on this last season and le hubs and I went away this weekend for our wedding anniversary and watched the entire second half of season 6 in one night.... My eyes were puffy and RAW, and it was totally worth it. Also, I know you're looking for book suggestions, but I'm giving you something else. Have you listened to the Serial podcast? Because you should. SUUUUUUPER!!!!
    • Bev Weidner February 3, 2015 at 9:00 am #
I haaaave listened to the Serial podcast! Got super obsessed at Christmas and listened to it over three days. Best decision of my life.
  30. Lynn bb February 4, 2015 at 6:18 am #
The Girl on the Train if you liked Gone Girl.
  31. Moriah February 5, 2015 at 1:12 pm #
I'm reading Reconstructing Amelia by Kimberly McCreight. It is a mystery thriller. It has been very good so far! It's the kind that sucks you in right away. The Secret Life of Bees is also on my to read list.
    • Eliza H February 6, 2015 at 11:35 am #
I forgot about Reconstructing Amelia! I read it last year and LOVED it! I also second the recommendation above for All The Light You Cannot See, so good!
  32. Danyelle February 6, 2015 at 8:18 pm #
The Lady Julia Grey series by Deanna Raybourn. Snarky Victorian amateur sleuth solving crimes.
  33. Tess February 11, 2015 at 1:29 pm #
'You Should Have Known' by Jean Hanff Korelitz is GREAT - if you loved Gone Girl, you will love this one. I thought it was even better than Girl on the Train! (Although I liked that, too.)
  34. Emily February 11, 2015 at 1:48 pm #
The Horse Boy, The Glass Castle, Shantaram, Marching Powder, and Brain on Fire are all amazing!
