Friday Flotsam

FLAAAEEEERRRRRRRTTTTsam.

Tell me what makes you HAPPY.

And no, we’re going to get all therapyish here. Do you know me at all?

I’m just genuinely curious – what makes you the happiest? And I’m not really talking about the broad scope of life – family, friends and health. Not that. Let’s go tiny. Let’s get microscopic. Let’s dig!

I’m thinking about this today because yesterday at pickup I was talking to our normal pod of pickuppers about the fall time change this weekend, and I was waxing poetic about the emotional ritual of it all (we’ve talked about this before but I’m TYING IT IN, OKAY), and the feeling of that impending extra hour of sleep. The slipping into earlier night rhythms, the fishing out the wool socks (wait, where’s the other one?), the stacking of the heavier blankets on the sofa – I’m obsessed with it all. And they were like, “Okay I’ve never been excited about a time change until now.” (however they were also staring at me like I might need psychiatric help.)

Thing is, there’s romance in everything. All the little creaky crevices of life. You just have to notice it.

WAIT, this is taking a turn. Let me steer back.

Tell me specifically what makes you tick. What sparks the inner giddy and puts the skip in your step?

It might simply be the glow of candlelight. (me) The dancing of the flickering flames. (me) It might be classical music first thing in the morning paired with a rich coffee with cinnamon foam and a brief pinterest glance at lush English gardens or antique gallery walls loaded with aged brass frames. (me) It might be rain. Rain all day. With open casement windows and that breeze that comes through that smells like the cool wet petrichor. (me)

It might be the slicing through fresh bread dough with a sharp knife and the shiny underneath peeking through, knowing that it’s going to somehow transform into a stunning design in a hot oven. (me)

It might be clustering antique spoons in a small jar on your countertop next to fresh coffee grounds, a new candle and a thrifted scalloped spoon rest. (me)

It might be the feeling of teetering on inspiration and complete contentment. Those rare, rare moments in life where you feel motivated to take a project on, but absolutely okay if you don’t get to it in that instant. Because it’s fine. Your hair is washed and your book is deliciously ready. (me)

What makes you truly happy?

And listen, if you say a pumpkin spiced latte from a mega coffee chain, I won’t get mad. (maybe)

I have a question for you guys. And this JUST happened, so I have no idea how to really respond.

Nat wants a gold fish for Christmas. But dudes I am NOT ABOUT to buy an aquarium. Hail no. I’m thinking more along the lines of a simple fish bowl. Is that cruel though? Do people still do this? Have fish bowls? Is this allowed? If it’s a beta fish, is it allowed? Can we stick two gold fish in a fish bowl? Is this inhumane? I have no idea. I like the idea of a cute little fish in a cute little bowl with cute little blue rocks in the bottom with a cute little mermaid-style scene in the bowl, but is this horribly mean? I have no idea. It feels wonderfully nineteen nineties and you know I’m IN but is this wrong? I need guidance.

Do you guys have gold fish in a bowl? Beta in a bowl?

We’re starting a band called Beta in a Bowl.

Look at this fabric. I was thinking about one of these options for my pleated lampshade project but I didn’t pull the plug on any because maybe it’s too lumberjack? Or just lumberjack enough? Or a fun different style mixed it with all my other random textures? Originally I was thinking Victorian floral but now I don’t know.

Also would the light bulb even shine through this? It’s too thick, isn’t it?

Also also it’s sort of a flannel material, so it might hard to hot glue in place. Perhaps cotton is better.

DIY-ers – what’s your input?

Also also also will someone make me a blazer out of that brown/red pattern on the left? Thanks, cool. Thanks.

Weekend plans?

(Does this photo ^ immediately have you reaching for an Allegra D?)

We have very little, and it’s wonderful. I’m shooting chicken and potatoes today, rain is on the way, and I plan on finishing The Family (I’m so behind!). We have a Girl Scouts garden clean out tomorrow morning, and then it’s ROOMS PURGE (ya know, to make room for a goldfish bowl). I also might try and get my new kitchen café curtains up on Sunday! I’ll keep you posted because I know your life happiness hinges on this.

From this week! (You guys, my site is SO jank, I know it. I’m working on it next week. Thanks for your patience with this nonsense.) Your mixtape! All lush mood, so you best pop on over. And then a risotto with ham and arugula that’s fit for a king! Or all of us. Either way. Get in both.

Okay, happy seekers – tell me what it is. What’s your secret?

I actually love that I recently dropped everything to pursue dreams that I spent years thinking were out of reach: the inner satisfaction is so worth it that I’ve sacrificed all my tiny life pleasures! Except breakfast, I still like quietly eating breakfast by myself at the kitchen table. I did that as a kid and still find it so calming.

Ooooo breakfast the table alone is diviiiiine.

It is the little things. I looooove having breakfast by myself, eating the bread I’ve baked with a little apple jelly and a cup of tea once the kids are in school, hubby at work. Silence is truly golden! Most of the time, our cat wants me to pet him (not so alone!). Taking morning walks with the girlfriends. Watching cooking shows and trying different recipes. Reading a good book. I did one of those girls’ only trips during the summer to Positano while my parents watched my 3 kids. Heaven on earth!

I bought a vanity after my divorce and I love just sitting at it after every shower and brushing my hair. I also love listening to the Friends theme song every time I watch an episode, but refuse to listen to the actual song if it ever comes on my Spotify. I also love writing with my favorite pen whether it is to grade papers or make a to do list or a grocery list or journal or even just doodle...pens, yo.... priorities ...

I love when you buy something seemingly innocuous but it comes in so handy every time you use it, you just get a little bit of joy. Like I bought this extension cord with one of those little round pop up buttons, you basically just step on the button to turn whatever has been plugged in on or off, do you know the ones? Anyways I have these little fairy lights stuffed into an antiquey looking birdcage on the top of a bookshelf and I hated crouching down to plug and unplug them so I got the cord with the button. And I just get a little smile every time I use it. And it was like $4!? Oh and I have the books on said bookshelf organized by colour and it’s so satisfying to look at, always makes me smile. And finding the perfect gift for someone! This is fun I could go on and on naming small things!

I love when something makes me laugh unexpectedly. I love when a book pulls me in from the first paragraph. I love when a recipe turns out perfectly. I love when I give a gift and the recipient seems so pleased. I love shopping for said gifts. I love when you take a photo and later see something in the shot that you didn't realize you had captured. Lastly, as I age I love having no expectations. Everything seems to unfold more perfectly with this mindset.

Your fabric photo caught my eye as I own a fabric website and love everything fabric....as well a cooking. I also love owning my own business and being my own boss. No 2 days are alike and I get to connect with people from all over the world! As far as the lamp shade goes you can get a general idea on if the light would shine thru by using the flashlight on your phone and holding it behind the fabric. The fabrics in your pic look to be flannels and they will have a more opaque appearance versus a quilters cotton. Feel free to peruse my website or Etsy shop if you are still looking for options.

The smell of clover, especially if it is damp because it makes me think a river is nearby. Walking in the woods and spotting an owl in the tree or hearing a deer snort because the dogs and I have scared it (sorry deer). Strong coffee. The taste, the smell. Sticking my face in the neck of my pets and getting a good sniff- they always smell so good there. Flannel sheets in fall and crisp cotton sheets in spring. :) BTW- I think you need to use the fabric for pillows! That's where my brain immediately went.

I love when my dogs do a head tilt whenever I ask them a question. It never gets old. It really is the little things.

I get unreasonably happy and emotional every time I see someone or experience someone doing something they were so clearly meant to do. For example I go to a massage therapist who you can just tell she was put on earth with the gift of healing others via massage and I leave weepy with joy that I get to benefit from her gift. Or there's this home goods store/café near where I live that whenever I walk through I just feel giddy because the men that run the place are so clearly living out their vocation. You can just tell. Every single detail is thought out and perfect. Other things on my happy list include the opening act of any live show, making soup on a quiet weekend afternoon, drinking coffee in bed, finishing a book so good your heart hurts a little that it's over, and hearing my dog relax with a big sigh as he crawls up next to me on the couch. Love this question!!

Planning a trip someplace new sights/hikes/food/shopping. Mailing a little just cuz I love you surprise to someone. A warm shower after a long run. Crossing the finish line of a 5k/10k. Wine Wednesday with the girls. Scratching my puppy dog behind her ears & kissing the top of her head. Puppy snores. Coming home after work to a clean house & warm dinner in the slow cooker - hardly ever happens ha ha

First of all, cinnamon foam? Do tell. Please! I love the early mornings up by myself. I prefer it if my college student is home in his bed for the weekend, but I'll take two boys out of three I guess. I putter letting the dog out, put the coffee on, turn on the fireplace, turn on one corner lamp, grab a cozy blanket and my book, and just sit. The book is closed on my lap for a while as I just soak everything in with the dog nestling in next to me. It's the best. I hope I'm up really early, because I don't prefer alarms on the weekend. Sometimes I put on French music...but often times it's just silence and the furnace running. Divine.

Pumpkin spice lattes from Starbucks 😜 no really though, it's this time of year that's beautiful. And any change of season I suppose. Young children and their personalities. Cooking in my kitchen. Listening to my best song, which I've just discovered that day and had on repeat ever since. The Lord answering your prayer. Dressing in something that's exactly your taste. Sugary, hot tea. Wintery walks. Having nowhere to be. And my Pinterest boards .. ;) Oh and finishing work on a Friday afternoon..!! That's heaven on earth

My grandson has a Beta fish (of course he named it Blueberry🤷🏻‍♀️) in a bowl and it has lived 2 years so far. And I THINK betas have to be alone cause they will fight? Easy to take care of.

My favorite band announcing a new tour and planning which cities I want to visit and meet up with friends. (counting Crows is THE band in question) A big pot of pasta sauce simmering on a Sunday watching the Buffalo Bills play. A warm cookie I just baked. The first snow of the season. The first red leaf spotted in September Watching a new Dateline with Keith My husband yelling from the other room ‘It’s 11:11’ Driving with the top down on my Beetle Listing to a new song by P!nk for the first time. Seeing your breath on that first chilly fall day. Slipping into bed first night using flannel sheets.

Fresh bed sheets, the first sip of a perfectly mixed margarita with salt, first peek at a successful sourdough bread bake, treating myself to a coffee and nice pastry after school drop off. The fishbowl seems a little cruel… can you do one with faux fish?

Overhearing people talk about things I also love. For example, standing in line for coffee and a couple behind me talking about trying to add more Nancy Meyers vibes to their home. It makes me happy thinking about all the people snuggled up watching Father of the Bride. That other people laugh at Martin Short as hard as I do. Ugh.

Oh I am so with you. And you want to turn around and chime in and agree and talk about specifics (me) because you're an unleashed sanguine (me) but you remind yourself they're enjoying their lives so let them be in peace. :)

It’s “the planning” for me. It’s the coming up with the idea, the writing it down, the picking it out, then the overthinking it some, the designing and even re-designing…. But what it is not, it’s just not “the doing!” Can I plan it and someone else come in and do it? Kthanks.

I have kept my son’s beta fish alive for OVER A YEAR! We have a small 1 gallon tank with a small pump/filter and a heater. Beta fish need a heater. Learned that one the hard way with the first beta fish. They also can jump out of the container and commit suicide. Learned that one with the second beta. But the 3rd one is going strong! Best of luck with the fish.

My 10 month old is eating finger foods. Let me tell you, the lingering smell of strawberry on baby hands…. 10 out of 10! Also, love getting into freshly laundered sheets. And the Friday Night Lights sounds from the nearby high school - band and all!

I love this! Let’s celebrate the little things. Today it’s cooler temps (finally in Texas), watching the Georgia-Tennessee game (GO DAWGS! 🐾) and starting a new book (The Winners by Fredrick Bachman). Happy weekend!

My 'Barnes and Noble' chair (used to use theirs for the longest time, then finally found one of my own!) The smell of a used bookstore (deep breath in. And out. Ahhh). The sound of kids playing outside -- laughing and screaming with joy. The first bite of my mom's spaghetti and meatballs. The sound of THE FIRST mower in the spring. Hearing the song 'Summer Nights' randomly when I'm feeling 'meh' (Yes, it has happened! Now I have to go to WalMart and wait about an hour : ) and on that note Grease and anything Olivia Newton John (even her name lol!) Hydrangeas and Weeping Willow Trees. Savannah, Ga. Your playlists. Thanks!!

Waking up in the night, trying to get back to sleep, and hearing a train blowing its horn at a crossing or the sound of rain on the roof puts me right back to sleep. Re the goldfish, I recently read an article that said putting them in a little bowl where they have to swim round and round and round is akin to torture and they die quickly....

Watching the sun rise in the morning, the colors quickly changing as the time moves forward, the peacefulness of time alone, coffee brewing and the anticipation of the first sip, knowing the book you chiose is perfect after the first page!

After having read this post, I realised there are only two major reasons why this tantalising, inspiring, gladdening, and razzle- dazzling lady would enhance my life. But dont know if i missed the sounds of your monthly mixtape? Did i miss it?
