Friday Flotsam

Frrrrrrrrrrrrrreedildy dooooo.

You know what will always be? No matter how old I get, the parents on sitcoms from my childhood will always be older than me. Always. This shan’t be argued.

Cliff and Clair Huxtable? Much older than me.

Uncle Jesse and Joey? A lot older. Aunt Becky? Someday I’ll be her age and have that bob.

Jason and Maggie Seaver? Icons. Also way older than me.

They will always be older. Even when I’m 94, they’ll have complete influential control over me.

The end.

The other night I also decided that we all need to get back into Enya.

ENYA! I’m serious, you guys. Go put her on right now and feel your heart go, “ohhhhh yeah this is what’s miiiiiissiiiiiiiiing.” Enya.

The other night Natalie had a little headache (said like Louisette Bertholle from Julie and Julia because you can’t not say it like her.), so I told her that we’d get in my bed and I’d give her a little face spa treatment. We do this semi-often. (I try with Will too but he just laughs) Turn the lights low, heat up a rag, place it on the face, let it sit, remove it, spray a little mist over the face, then some lavender oil and then just massage the little face for a few minutes. Puts ’em right to sleep.

BUT – we normally put on spa music. This time I was like, “We have to listen to Enya if we know how to properly live.” And it totally transformed our little experience. And then I just decided right then and there to just . . . listen to Enya more. Like why not. She’s a viiiiibe, man. I remember getting Watermark in the late ’80s for my birthday or Christmas or something and just dying over it. Dying! So that’s what you have to do this weekend. Listen to Enya and soar away into emotional bliss.

But I’m not dramatic about it or anything.

I need to know what’s on your summer reading list. This would normally be saved for a Book Club post, but I’m wildly impatient and need to know now. I’m finishing Welcome to the World, Baby Girl this weekend (old Fannie Flagg from the ’90s. I love it!), and have The Women next in line, but I think I’m feeling more summery vibes for a couple of months before I go heavy. And Kristen Hannah is always heavy. Brilliant, but heavy.

What chew got?! I’m still behind on Emily Henry and I need to read last year’s Funny Story. And I know Carley Fortune is getting some attention this year with her newest. But I haven’t read any of her books, so I might need to start there. But what else are you craving this summer? Anything Mary Kate Andrews? I need breezy, scandal, some sand maybe, and steamy romance. Spill it!

Weekend plans?

We’re finally hitting the pool today! It’s been chilly and rainy all week, so for it to hit 80 will feel magical. Our last (!) soccer game tonight (well, until August), a lot of yard work tomorrow, and a fun picnic shoot on Sunday with some friends. You know I’ll be showing you every single detail. Time for white linens, woven sun hats, good cheeses and jazz, baybuh! (sorry I said it like that)

I did post some Meatballs with Lemon Rice yesterday, if you need something for the weekend menu. And here’s a video for it! It’s truly delicious, I know you will love it.

I’m so excited to hear your summer reading list while we crank up Enya and never age past our sitcom parent heroes.

I am reading Once Golden Summer by Carley Fortune right now and loving it. I would agree any of her books are great summer reads. On my short list....The Bright Years, Run for the Hills, Broken Country (heard great things about this one), It's a Love Story and River is Waiting.

The Women is one of the best books I have read in the last few years, so I envy you getting to read it for the first time! It's on my re-read list for this summer. I can't help it - I like to re-read my favorites. However, you are correct and it is heavy.

I agree with Melissa on her review of The Women. Great book. I just finished a book called Breathless set on a barrier island off the coast of Georgia and made me want to visit said island. Not sure if it’s a YA novel but this older adult thoroughly enjoyed it! Not sure what I’ll read over the summer but I have several shelves full! Enjoy!
