Friday Flotsam

Frrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrridge gets fixed today!

Let me back up.

Our refrigerator started ticking last Saturday morning and I was like, “Oh haha! Listen to that ticking sound in the vent. Isn’t that cute? Must be waking up.”

WRONG.

The compressor thingamabob went kaput. It’s out of freon. Which means it’s not cold. Started with the freezer, then slooooowly started moved over to the fridge. It just so happened that my friend was Anna was over at the time for the Diane Keaton Appreciation Movie Night (we watched Baby Boom. omg fantastic.), so she took my freezer veggie scrap stash that I was saving for my Thanksgiving stock. Whew! But everything else had to be tossed. Which was fine because it was like, half bags of frozen veggies and old pizza. We’re good.

BUT, here’s my question for you. We moved our basement mini fridge up to the kitchen and transfered over all the meat and dairy. But everything else had to stay in the main fridge due to lack of room. Like pickles and condiments.

Tell me – do I have to chuck literally everything in there? I know most things say, “refrigerate after opening” but hoooooow serious do you think that really is? Like my hot sauces – am I tossing or is there some vinegary preservative that once cold it’s all good again? Do I have to toss our pickles? Bbq sauces? Mustards? Aren’t those like, built for an apocalypse?

Does everything have to go?

Be gentle with me.

On that, we could have purchased a new fridge, but listen, you can order new freon for your existing fridge. It’s expensive, yes, but not NEARLY the price of a new fridge. And a new one wouldn’t arrive until mid-December and I cannot make these huge decisions right now and we’re hosting Thanksgiving and this cannot happen and also it’s more sustainable, eh?

I’ve been listening to a Canadian podcast and the amount of aboots and oots and ehs are tickling me to no end.

But really like, am I tossing it all? Please say no.

Who here has seen the new Martha documentary? What do we think? The trailer gives me goosebumps, and I was told by someone on IG that her younger years has a me vibe. I was so flattered! Should I be flattered? I love Martha. She’s intense, yes, but she’s Martha.

Carving out time today to watch. I just have to.

Also if you have a Christmas book stash you’re putting together, do fill me in.

Weekend plans?

It’s a slow one around here and I’m beyond giddy. I’ll hit a couple of estate sales this morning (looking for napkin rings for T-giving), get a Covid booster and flu shot this afternoon, get my damn freon back in, watch Martha, make a colossal grocery list, diy some aged silver chalice candles for our Thanksgiving table (look it’s already so Martha!), prep two pie crusts and my stock (once the freezer is freezing), finish Never Never (omg!), watch some girl’s soccer, watch some women’s soccer, watch the Chiefs, go to bed early. Hey these skins ain’t gonna turn themselves over!

From this week: Potsticker Soup! So many of you have already made it and my heart soars. You just don’t know. Here’s the video. It is a keeeeeper, you guys. Make it this weekend!

But really, am I throwing everything away? Say it ain’t so.

Absolutely not! Mayo? Sour cream? Cheese? All trash! condiments stay. I will be carrying my apple cider vinegar and cholula into the apocalypse.

I have the mayo/cheese and sour cream in our mini fridge, so that's all good! But the condiments can stay? Whew!

I was going to say the same thing. Ketchup, mustard, pickles, vinegars - none of it needs to be refrigerated. So I should take my own advice and stop refrigerating them. The condiment section of my fridge is out of control!

The universe has impeccable timing doesn’t it? I’ve never refrigerated my hot sauces. And in my head, some restaurants leave ketchup and mustard on the table so I feel like that should be fine. As far as bbq sauce goes, I’m not sure since it has such a high sugar content. Although, so does some ketchup 🤦🏻‍♀️ what a mess lol, I hope you get it resolved soon!

FASCINATED by Martha! Yeah, she’s not always nice, but I’m a fan! The documentary is very good watching!

I see everyone has already to suffice, but I just wanted to share. My grandmother left her pickles out on the counter for… eva! I mean, until they were gone. She tested the food poisoning limits on everything! Like potato salad out 24 hours or more kinda stuff. Such a hoot! I’ve learned most things you can smell or taste if they’re off. 😜

How long can condiments like hot sauce, Incredibox Colorbox Mustard pickles, and mustard last without refrigeration before they become unsafe to eat?
