Friday Flotsam

I want to get more into sauces in 2016. Like, pan sauces! The kind that you make right at the end of cooking a meal- add some sherry, some mustard, some loose hair (<–just kidding), and whisk her up until she be all glorious like.

I feel like I hardly ever make pan sauces. Except for yesterday. I made a pan sauce yesterday. It’s for a recipe that I’m posting next week and as I was making it I thought, “This! This needs to be my new life. My new pan-sauce life. This feels right for me.” And there was light.

Do you dig pan sauces? What’s your go-to sauce? You know how I need you to guide me in this journey of life. Do you typically go for a beer/mustard combo? A lemon/parsley/wine/butter type of thing? Anything different and fun and whack and loco and tow up I should know about?

2016. THE YEAR OF PAN SAUCES.

I kind of want to squeal.

We need to talk about something.

And I’m fairly positive this will be the ultimate deal breaker in our relationship. But I just can’t hide this anymore.

I . . . don’t really care for Star Wars.

Wait, don’t throw your computer in a river!

Hear me out, you guys. It’s not that I don’t GET IT, because I do. It’s a total classic, blah blah. The mouth breathing in Dark Rasor’s hat mask thingy, sure sure. The cinnamon buns on Princess Layla’s head, right right. Dark and Luke Skyrunner are totally related. I get it!

But isn’t the entire point of the movie is that young Harrison Ford is way hot? What else is there to know?

And let’s not get started on the ORDER of Star Wars movies. Four, five, six, one, two, three, seven, fourteen, ninety four. NO. That is silly, Star Wars. Stop it. Did the NeverEnding Story ever pull this sort of bull honko trickery on us? It did not. It. did. not.

More like Star BORES.

Now, the movie Sisters? THAT I can get on board with.

Friday Flotsam

If you’re still even with me after what I just put you through, bless your soul forever.

Also, what’s your faaaaavorite feel good song? The song that makes your shoulders pump up and down. The song that makes you open your kitchen windows and dance around the room with a mop like in the beginning of Honey I Shrunk the Kids.

You know you do it, too.

Friday Flotsam

So, we’re not doing the Elf on the Shelf just yet, because I don’t know if any of you guys have noticed, but two year olds are kind of dumb.

But you guys, I read the book to them last night, and that ish is weird. You can’t TOUCH him? He gets into mischief? He knocks over flowers and gets into the cookie jar and sets out mouse traps and lights your Christmas tree on fire? What sort of evil, a-hole elf is this?!

He should be hanging out with STEPHEN KING, NOT SANTA.

Friday Flotsam

Weekend plans?! All done with your shopping? Are you totally over my MIX??? I swear I’m almost done bugging you about this dang mix.

You know what, I’m just going to let you digest what I said about Star Wars. I feel like you might need a moment.

(Just remember that I’m a nice person.)

(. . .and that I love you.)

(okay bye)

I'm over all this Star Wars junk. I don't care about it. at. all. pan sauces are da bomb. Try this recipe. It's from ATK and I love it. http://www.bakespace.com/recipes/detail/Pan-Roasted-CHicken-with-Shallot-and-Vermouth-Sauce/31297/

NOT a Star Wars fan. However, I will admit I've never actually seen any of the movies. So maybe I'm just a Star Wars ignorer.

I have never seen any of the Star Wars movies and I have no interest. My husband can't believe I've made it this far into life and am still breathing. Thankfully, he's not one of these wait-in-line have to see it in the theater people, but he did just ask for the Triology (which I learned is episodes 4, 5 and 6) on Blu-ray for Christmas because he NEEDS to watch them. Oh and also, he might not be able to wait until Christmas. Mmmm...k. :-)

Doesn't it feel magical to be able to say "I don-t like Star Wars"? Like, not at all, the only thing I know is Natalie Portman was on it and she's cool. Bf doesn't know a thing about it either, so hooray for us, and maybe I should marry him tomorrow because of this. Well, no, maybe next year. Don't show him this.

I am not on the Star Wars train. And I don't feel like I'm missing a thing. But I just watched Inside Out and that movie is SO good.

I love the "Big Chill" soundtrack - guess I'm showing age - but some of the best songs ever!

Ok, I can't believe I'm in the minority here but I love Star Wars (4, 5, 6, 7). The other numbers can go fly a kite. ;-) I'm not a crazed super fan, I didn't "dress up" or anything but I did sport a Dark Rasor ring I got from a cupcake. I've got SOME pride. Your Star Wars blurb up there that shocked me to my core cracked me up. I wish I would have written that. We actually stood in line and saw it last night! (hubs super crazy fan). I still haven't listened to your December mix. I need to get on that. And p.s. I'll still be your blog friend/internet stalker/read-every-post-you-write person.

I'm so with you on the Star Wars. I don't get the hype at all. How many of these dang movies do they think they need to make??

Star Trek > Star Wars... but Firefly > Star Trek! Among other things. But I definitely get you with not understanding the Star Wars mania. I mean it's fine and whatever, but really doesn't do anything for me. And I'll let you in on a little secret of mine... I kind of felt the same way about Harry Potter. Still friends?? Also, I am likewise intrigued by pan sauces, so I'm on board for the 2016 theme!

Bev, I totally get you! I don't like Star Wars either! I was begining to this I was the only one out there. unlike you, I don't get it. It makes zero sense to me. In fact I've never even seen a whole movie. Just one scene that was filmed in our town, because I think it's cool that such a huge movie was done here, and I wanted to see what it was like. I knew the back story, so it wasn't like I just walked into the middle of the movie and was confused about what was happening. scene was way enough for me. Umm yeah. That was way more than enough for me! :)

Wow. my phone really botched that comment! Sorry for all the horrible grammatical errors!

I'm still diggin' your October mix! You're allow to dislike Star Wars...and I'm allowed to say that I hate hate elf on a shelf, SO creepy. Have you seen pictures of a guy who dressed up like elf on a shelf and hid around the house? Stop the madness!
    • Heather Buzby December 18, 2015 at 12:43 pm #
Oh and I'm terrible at pan sauces to please do sauce it up and share!

Ha! I am right there with on the whole Star Wars thing.
  13. Liz A December 18, 2015 at 3:14 pm #
The only sauces I know how to make are pasta sauce, and a bechamel sauce. But I totally had a Bev/Julia Child vision when I read that paragraph. You can be her! You can!! Also, pretty sure that in a venn diagram of your blog and Star wars, it's a pretty small overlap. Just a guess. Because Star wars folks are a whole other sort of weird, not like our weird...

Lenny Kravitz /Are You Gonna Go My Way, Cracker/ Eurotrash Girl, Black Keys/ Gotta Get Away, Kenny Rogers and the First Edition/ Just Dropped In, Aerosmith/ Mama Kin, Lucinda Williams/ Joy, Prince/ Kiss, Cage the Elephant/ Ain't No Rest for the Wicked, Nirvana/ Where Did You Sleep Last Night I drive a lot so these are also my "turn the stereo up obnoxiously loud and sing along and embarrass my kid" songs. I think the elf is a little creepy too, but my son is in kindergarten and his teacher has one in their classroom and the kids all love her (the class is 18 girls and 6 boys so they decided the elf was a girl). One day the class was not listening in PE and didn't line up to go to the library so the elf fell ill and was sick in bed until everyone was making better choices. The next morning she was sitting up in her bed with a box of tissues and everyone was being so polite and using their indoor voices and holding the door for other people and sharing and cleaning up after themselves. I'm actually hoping to see the new Star Wars in the IMAX theater...

I so very much dislike Star Wars and am always the outlier in a crowd. I only saw part of the remake in 1997 or somewhere around there. I was 13 and fell alsleep in the theater. Elf on a shelf has such a bogus premise for me. Be good or else this elf will be mischievous and also report to Santa? I looked for an alternative and after 3 years found Star From Afar. It's basically a nativity scene with a star. You place the star in a different spot each day and then the kids move the wise men next to the star. It. There is a cute book that comes with it explaining their trek.

I hear your pain with the elf...he's not our cup O tea either. eeeks
  19. Deja December 21, 2015 at 9:37 pm #
Hate the elf! The biggest issue for me is remembering to move it. Who needs one extra thing to remember every night/early morning during the busiest month of the year! My youngest wanted to do it so badly so I gave in, she is 8 and I am not sure how many more years of Santa I will get. My older kids are 13 and 14 so I want to hold on.

Long live the pan sauces! I adore those taking meat drippings all rolled into a buttery (most often) pan sauce to dip bread in or pour of meat and veggies! I have to admit, I am right there with you on Star Wars - hasn't this guy ridden this gravy train long enough!
