Friday Flotsam

Frrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr……….!

I almost didn’t write today’s Flotsam. This week has been so heavy, so devastating, so crippling, so helpless, so gutting. But I decided this morning, literally right now as I’m changing my mind and still typing these words, that I must keep on. Actions have been made this week. Voices are loud and angry and demanding a change and it’s invigoration to watch and see. We’re not going to get into a debate here on what the problem is, what went wrong, what needs to change, because there’s a whole hell of a lot that needs to and that’s not the purpose of this blog. But it’s giving me a lot of hope to watch the outcry. Pain has been put into fed-up motion and that’s powerful. Energizing. So here we are. It’s Friday and the sun is FINALLY COMING OUT TODAY (insert all the Annie gifs, hellooooo) and I’m going to find things that give me joy, dangit. I’m going to love on my kids. I might even stealth yoink a lick of their ice cream later on. May hit a thrift store. Finish my mystery novel. Park picnic with best friends. PURGE MY CLOSET.

Which brings me to Winona Ryder.

I’ve been thinking a LOT about Winona (forever) Ryder lately.

Mainly because of the Depp/Heard trial – which oh! Today is the last day of the trial! How do you see this ending? How long do you think the jury will take? I sincerely hope Johnny comes out of this alive and okay. And winning. At least something.

BUT! Kate Moss’s appearance the other day had me desperately wishing for Winona to take the stand, too. And then I just completely spiraled from there. Remembering her style and hair and mood in Reality Bites and the vibe of that whole movie and how it ruined me so so good. It came out in 1994, so while they were graduating from college, I was graduating from high school and everything just aligned in my soul with that movie. I sort of had her look (definitely her hair) in college and my then-boyfriend sort of had Ethan Hawke’s look (definitely his hair) in college so of course the movie made itself my life and vice versa.

Which THEN had me rethinking all of my clothes. And reexamining her exact style in that movie and where we overlap. (button-ups, natch) Which THEN had me ordering a pair of black trousers like hers but before I link them out let me get them, put them on and see if they’re worth a mention.

WHICH NOW will have me yanking out a bunch of button-ups in my closet (the old ones) and trimming off the sleeves to create cute factory-looking three-quarter doo-dads like hers. I know zero of this makes sense but I HAVE A VISION.

You know me and my visions.

Winona forever.

Also can we please talk about Austin Butler?

You know Austin Butler, right? Remember the feeling we all had in 1996 when Baz Luhrmann put out Romeo and Juliet and we saw Leo Dicaprio in a slightly new . . .ahem, light?

Mark my words, Austin Butler is next. (apparently this just became a celebrity gossip site.)

Remember when we used to talk about him on the Carrie Diaries?! First of all remember the Carrie Diaries?! He was a delicious snack on the show and I remember thinking, “Oh this dude will be everywhere soon. He’s it.” And then I didn’t see him anywhere really!

UNTIL NOW, DU DU DUUUUUUUUH.

He’s Elvis. In Baz’s new movie. Baz does it again, you guys. And I’m not an over-the-top Elvis lover or anything, but o.m.g. Austin is perfect. Um he beat out Harry STYLES for the part. (this is definitely a celeb gossip site now.)

I just feel like he’s got that same je ne sais quoi that Leo had. I mean nothing will ever beat mid-’90s Leo, but Austin’s close.

Do you agree? Tell me you agree.

Of course I prefer Austin blond but really any version is scrumptious.

BUT WAIT: does he have the Johnny Depp factor? Or more Leo?

Tell me, Depp or Dicap?

You’re still thinking about the fact that I wrote “stealth yoink” up there, aren’t you?

Yesterday I overheard Aaron say to the kids, “This is an argument between STUFFED ANIMALS. I don’t know, let them work it out!”

And my summer was made.

Memorial Day weekend plans?

Like I said, the sun is finally coming out again after a deluge of rain, and I just may weep with joy. We’re also saying goodbye to some dear friends this afternoon who are moving to Florida, so I’m slabbing on extra waterproof mascara for the event. Apparently no matter what, there will be tears today. Ha! Oh.

From this week, in case ya missed it::: Gnocchi with Roasted Cauliflower and Tomatoes! Super simple and the flavors will cripple ya. And then Prosciutto-Wrapped Figs with Goat Cheese and Honey. A no-cook appetizer that will please your entire mouth. Get in both!

Why yes, stealth yoink is definitely a thing.

I definitely had to reread "stealth yoink" a couple times to be sure I was reading that right! Ha! Why have I never heard of Austin Butler? I mean, I'm older than you but looks like he's been around a while. But now I know! Happy Friday!

You hope a serial abuser of women makes it out okay? That's really disappointing.

What? Not at all. I just do NOT think he's guilty here. Everything I've seen in the trial shows me zero evidence of abuse.

Winona was in so many iconic 90’s movies: Reality Bites, Mermaids, Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Heathers. The list goes on and on. Now Stranger Things! Someone give the woman a lifetime achievement award already. I crushed on Leo so much when that movie came out that I named my kittens Romeo and Juliet. Never mind they were brother and sister cats. I also wrote my name paired with DiCaprio on all my notebooks. Then Good Will Hunting came out and I had to leave Leo for Matt.

Late to the party but yoink is one of my favorite verbs ever, stealth makes it even better! I’m really interested in this new Elvis portrayal - I’m trying to remember how many actors have done so in the past? I loved this flotsam, Bev! And also - Team Johnny!
