Friday Flotsam

FRRRRRRRRRRmastolf!

Who invented the whole “guess-what-chicken-butt!” ordeal? Because he needs some firm talkin’ to.

Will and Nat are obsessed with it and I’m being sent to an early grave, you guys.

But they take it a few steps further. Of course they do.

Guess what. Chicken butt!

Guess who? Chicken poo!

Guess when? Chicken chin!

This is the kicker though, and I apologize for what’s about to happen to you and your fragile insides.

Guess where? Chicken HAIR.

CHICKEN. HAIR.

I’ve never heard anything more wrong and horrific in my entire life. If they never say the words “chicken” and “hair” again back to back it will be too soon.

Chicken hair.

No.

While we’re at it, I feel like a solid round of UNPOPULAR OPINION today.

And this is a risky little game, as Rachel Green once said to Phoebe at Monica and Chandler’s wedding when Phoebe told Rachel it was a negative pregnancy test.

It is indeed risky, because I’m about to tell you three things that I truly madly deeply feel are a) completely overrated and/or b) I basically can’t stand. These three things will either have you throwing your laptop into a pond, oooooor coming out of hiding and joining me in these very, very unpopular opinions. And I’m not one to ruffle feathers, but.

  1. Lady Gaga. No. Nope. Naw. Hard pass. Can’t do it. Her voice ain’t all that and she just tries so, so hard. Relax, Gags.

2. The Greatest Showman. I’ve tried watching it more than once and it severely pains me. The music is lazy, the acting is cringe (I love Jackman <and his charming rivalry with Reynolds>, but this just didn’t land for me) and in general a sloppy attempt at something that could have been cool.

3. Disney World. NOW LISTEN BEFORE YOU LOSE YOUR MIND, let me clarify something. I love Disney. The movies. Walt. The whole beginning and the charm and the story and how it shaped childhood for me. (at one point I even wanted to be a Disney cartoon singer! Could have done it.) But there is a massive pressure on parents to give their children Disney World while they’re young and I’m just so ick on it. I know people love it. I know it’s magical blah blah. But the (literal) price for making that happen, plus all the exhaustion that comes with it to “be so perfect” just makes me to scream. This is not life. I’m not blaming Walt. I’m blaming the pressure.

And if you’re an adult and you’re going to Disney World WITHOUT children, we’re talking a whoooole other level of bananas.

That’s all! 🙂 With me? Or blocking me? Tell me your unpopular opinions so I’m not dangling out on this shaky limb all alone.

Words I have to look up EVERY SINGLE TIME to make sure I spell them right:

Mayonnaise. (like, I just had to) Is it two n’s? Two s’s? One y? I never know!

Cannellini. (just had to again) Two l’s or one? Two n’s? I think it is. It’s so hard!

Okay there are so many more I’m embarrassed to say but I’ve gone blank. Probably because I just trash mouthed Gaga on the blog and fear the wave wrath.

Yesterday Will said to me, and I kid you not, “Guess what genre I’m thinking of.”

Me, “What genre? Um, mystery.”

“Nope.”

“Romance?”

“No, Mom.”

“Sci-fi?”

“Nope. What’s sci-fi?”

“Science Fiction.”

“Oh, nope.”

“Comedy?”

“No. I’ll just tell you. Expository text.”

“Suppository text?”

“EXPOSITORY TEXT. It’s another word for non-fiction.”

“Are you serious? I never knew. You sound insanely smart. I’m going to email your teacher with praises immediately.”

“What’s suppository?”

“Never mind.”

Weekend plans?

We’re on the Rosemary Beach countdown (one more week!) so I’m starting to get all the little things checked off the list to prepare. Oil change today. Actually, how many times do you think I’ll have to say, “Just the oil change please.” “No really, just the oil change.” I just may do a poll in Stories. You know my love for polls.

I’m also “performing” tomorrow evening at an all-second-grade-girls GIRCHELLA going-away slumber party for one of Nat’s besties. I’m bringing my guitar and busting out some Taylor, some Jewel, even some Loeb in their backyard on a little stage. I’ll take you with me. Duncha worry.

From this week, in case you missed it! Cajun Sausage Flatbread! A whip-together-dinner or simple party pleaser. It just works. And French-Inspired Egg Salad Sandwiches! Elegant, but brutally simple. Ya need both.

Okay I can still feel your eyes bugged out over the admissions. Are we . . . okay?

My unpopular opinion is that Beyoncé is incredibly overrated. I agree about gaga, but I think Beyoncé is in the same league of trying to hard 😬 I also think all of the Star Wars movies are dumb. Excuse me while I go hide 😶
    • Bev Weidner April 29, 2022 at 7:38 am #
YES YES YES. I find Star Wars to be a total bore. And with you on Beyonce. I LOVE Single Ladies, but the rest- meh.
      • Kim April 29, 2022 at 11:52 am #
I absolutely agree with you on all of it, especially Disney!
    • Tricia April 29, 2022 at 11:13 am #
yes, yes, yes. i agree on gaga (excluding a star is born -- sometimes), beyonce, showman, disney (no kids and going, whattttttt???). i'd add t-swift though. love adele though. i like her songs, voice and her personality.
  2. Stephanie April 29, 2022 at 7:34 am #
I have an even bigger unpopular opinion. I also think Adele is too much. I agree with your view on Disney. I took my kids when they were younger and my husband and I weren’t that in to it and thus neither were my kids. It only works if you as parents build up the hype and we just couldn’t. I’m not judging other people for doing that but for us it was just too much. I like Mac and cheese and I make a great one but - meh. I hate pictures and videos of baby animals of any kind. Even baby pandas. There. I’m a monster.
    • Bev Weidner April 29, 2022 at 7:37 am #
Okay I'm OBSESSED with your answers and agree! It's freeing to get this out. I like some of Adele's songs, but I'm with you. It's all a bit much.
  3. Kate April 29, 2022 at 7:38 am #
Yes, Yes, and YES! I’m proud you narrowed it down to 3. I’m not certain I would have the restraint. Because stuff with words on it and throw pillows also send me spiraling. But I digress. I’m excited about your gig! I love hearing you perform. Xo
  4. Alexis April 29, 2022 at 7:41 am #
Ok…deep breaths…I agree with you 2/3! Lady Gaga had me at A Star is Born but beyond that it’s a hard pass so maybe I’m a 2.5/3. The Greatest Showman…I tried. Just couldn’t get the hype. And Disney…I agree hands down! My two boys are grown and flown (23,21) and they’re never been and are perfectly content. Have they asked when they were young, yes but we’ve opted for traveling to different beaches and the Olympic National Park which they still talk about. I never went to Disney until my honeymoon and only because we were gifted two nights. In the end we do what’s best for our families. ❤️
  5. Hadar April 29, 2022 at 7:47 am #
Yes to the Disney stuff!! My in-laws keep asking when we’re going to take our 1 year old. I said they could take her I’d rather spend my money on another vacation 😂 my parents waited until my brother and I were old enough to actually remember the trip, and it was really anti-climactic. I also know people who did their honeymoon in Disney 🤢
  6. Rebekah S April 29, 2022 at 7:52 am #
I’m with you on all three. Disney, especially.
  7. Natalie April 29, 2022 at 7:54 am #
Disney world is a no. The price and the lines. I know you can purchase the fast pass but that circles me back to price. I can take my kids to any other amusement park and it be one day of a vacation not the entire vacation.
  8. Sue April 29, 2022 at 8:10 am #
Yikes. Gaga is spectacular, and I love her and her amazing voice. But T Swift? Ugh. I don’t think The Greatest Showman is sloppy, but the overacting is pretty awful. Some of the music and dance scenes are decent. But Pulp Fiction? I’ve always hated it. We couldn’t afford to take our kids to Disney World when they were young, so we took them as full grown adults. It was unexpectedly magical and wonderful, and I was so glad I wasn’t pushing them around in strollers. But water parks? No, thank you.

We just got back from a trip to the Rosemary Beach/30A area and loved it. Go to Grayton Seafood in Grayton Beach for dinner one night. The owners and atmosphere are delightful and the fresh seafood is delicious! Highly recommend.
  10. Becky April 29, 2022 at 8:10 am #
Lol!!! I can not sing so Gaga sounds great to me. I've never watched the greatest showman and don't plan to and I 100% whole heartedly agree about Disney. I don't get it. Why need a vacation from your vacation. It is so ungodly expensive. IF we ever take our kids they will be teenagers. Old enough to walk and to remember. But we will only be able to take them if we start saving now and continue for the next 10 years. It's so overrated. And Disney adults are just...?!?!?!?
  11. Paula April 29, 2022 at 8:32 am #
Love gaga. Have not seen The Greatest Showman. Agree about Disney.
  12. Kelley April 29, 2022 at 8:32 am #
I’m with you on Disney. They PRESSURE! And adults? Nope. Getting married at Disney World? NOPE. Disney Cruise? I’d throw myself off the side of the ship.
    • Amanda April 29, 2022 at 10:45 am #
Disney cruise would be the WORST!! My family laughs about how horrible it would be!
  13. samantha April 29, 2022 at 8:45 am #
i am WITH YOU. like on all levels. i do not understand the obsession with these things. there are so many other incredible things that deserve time and attention but these 3? passsssss
  14. Ariel April 29, 2022 at 9:08 am #
I am with you on 2/3 of your admissions....I dislike both Gaga and EVERYTHING you said about Disney World! As for the Greatest Showman, I enjoyed it and it melts my heart when my kids ( ages, 3, 5, 7, and 9) sing (belt) the songs to their hearts content. Chicken Hair is disgusting.... And I am so impressed with your son! Have a wonderful day. Your blog is a bright spot for me and I really enjoy all you do here and all of the world you undoubtedly out into it.
  15. Kara Montgomery April 29, 2022 at 9:13 am #
You had me until the Disney World part haha! Not a fan of Gaga-can’t stand her voice, The Greatest Showman was just ehh except for one song lol, but I love DW! I think it’s the nostalgia for me going as a kid before it was a “thing” but I totally get what you mean! I do wish they would chill on the prices though hah! 🤍
  16. Kara Montgomery April 29, 2022 at 9:18 am #
You had me until the Disney part haha! I’m not a fan of Gaga-don’t think her voice is easy on the ears. The Greatest Showman was just ehh except for one song lol. But I LOVE Disney World! I think it’s the nostalgia for me going as a kid before it was a “thing” but I totally get it! I do wish they would chill on the prices and limit the occupancy because it’s way too crowded! 🤍
  17. shannon April 29, 2022 at 9:29 am #
1000% agree with ALL three!! Looking forward to seeing you perform on stories- The girls are going to have a blast!
  18. Amanda April 29, 2022 at 9:30 am #
1 Gaga is fair, not wonderful like adele 2. Showman-blah, couldnt get thru it 3. California girl here so its DisneyLAND all the way! Did Disneyworld once and HATED IT! Overwhelming, crowded, and takes a week to see everything!! Splurge on airfare, come to Calif/Disneyland (takes 2 days to see it all), then go to Sanata Monica so kids can get in the ocean!! Drive to beautiful Santa Barbara…. also would never do Disney without kids!! Too weird!!!!!!!
  19. Wendy L. April 29, 2022 at 9:36 am #
    1. I also don’t care for Lady Gaga. She’s too over the top for me. Her songs get stuck in my head, but I don’t actually like them. 2. I’m obsessed with Hugh Jackman and he is my Hollywood crush, but I didn’t like the movie either. 3. I’ve never been to Disneyworld and have zero desire to go. We’ve been to Disneyland twice with our kids, but we waited until they were old enough (and tall enough) to go on all the fun rides. We were shocked how many people came with strollers and babies! Babies can’t ride the rides and they won’t remember it and Disney costs a small fortune!!! Why on earth would you take a baby? Also, it’s in Florida. Waiting in long lines in crazy humidity just doesn’t sound like a fun time to me.
  20. Sarah April 29, 2022 at 10:10 am #
Agree with you on all of those unpopular opinions and I’ll raise you one. Beyoncé. Nope. Nope. Never.
  21. Marine April 29, 2022 at 10:56 am #
YES! 100%!!! Ughhh I cannot stand Lady Gaga or Beyonce, and the amount of shame I get from people when I say that… it’s cringeworthy. How and why did they become these idols?! Never seen The Greatest Showman but also wholeheartedly agree about Disney. Especially since moving to the west coast- seems like half the people I know out here (adults with zero children, mind you) go to Disney Land at least once a year, if not more. I’ve just never understood the obsession, never will.
  22. michelle April 29, 2022 at 11:07 am #
I love Lady Gaga but I understand why people don't. I understand the Disney pressure too even though I love the parks and can't wait to visit again. So you're not left out on a limb, here are my unpopular opinions. (1) Bon Jovi is severely overrated; I can't switch stations fast enough when I hear their music. (2) Coffee is gross. (3) Onion rings are superior to French fries.
  23. Claire April 29, 2022 at 11:08 am #
I don’t care for Beyoncé and think she’s very overrated. Talented, sure. Queen? No. I also think the TV show Friends is overrated and I don’t think it’s funny. And I totally agree on Disney. Way too much hype for an insane price. If I can take my kids to Hawaii on vacation for the same price (we live on the west coast), I’m choosing Hawaii every time.
  24. Irene April 29, 2022 at 11:48 am #
Agree with all three, strongly. I’ll also add Beyoncé, Rihanna, TSwift, Adele, Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya, tomatoes, olives, tuna (canned, love fresh), ~having and aesthetic~, ok, I’ll stop here, the list could go on forever (and probably create too much unnecessary drama with insane stans lol)
    • Bev Weidner April 29, 2022 at 12:06 pm #
Hahaha, amazing! I'm loving your list. You know I'm a Swiftie (only her downcast moody current stuff), so I can't get on board there, but I GET YOU. Minus tomatoes and olives. And I love canned tuna. Okay never mind. ;)
  25. Toni April 29, 2022 at 12:25 pm #
On another note...I once took a college English course called "Expository Writing" without having a clue what "expository" meant...but it fit my schedule and I needed another 3 hours of English...turns out it was "arguing your point on a subject"...and I loved it and made an A. (surprise that I was finishing up my BA to go to law school!)
  26. Liz April 29, 2022 at 1:05 pm #
Wait til you hear what my adult sister is doing this weekend!! She is paying an INSANE amount of money go the the Star Wars experience at Disney World. She described it as going on a theme cruise except it’s not on a boat it’s at some top secret location in DW that looks like you are on the Star Ship or something. You play act like your in the movie all weekend. I asked her if she had a costume for this Geekfest and I did not get a straight answer so that means yes. Lord help us. Same for me on Gaga and didn’t see the movie so no comment.
  27. Dee April 29, 2022 at 1:28 pm #
Here's my VERY unpopular opinion: Friends. Overrated, not even funny, canned laughter I cannot stand, and ridiculously ubiquitous. I liked it for the first few years. After that hated it.
  28. Nancy April 29, 2022 at 2:12 pm #
Agree 100% on Gaga & Disney. Hard pass on both. I have opinions about the way she made Liza Minnelli look & feel on whatever award show they were on just recently, trying to make herself look good at Liza’s expense. Just no. Liza is the icon. Not you, Gaga. Have no idea what The Greatest Showman is so no comment 😊
  29. Emily April 29, 2022 at 4:01 pm #
I’ve never been a GAGA fan. So thank you for that. Also never seen The Greatest Showman. But my lack of desire for wanting to see it, even though my girls love the soundtrack, make sense. Somehow i just KNEW it must not be worth it. (And I absolutely adore Hugh.) I’m a middle-ground gal when it comes to Disney. I totally get what everyone else is saying, but we go and We have fun,… we spend too much money… we don’t try to make it perfect or over-hype it, or even try to over-plan it. We just roll with it. It works. We make fun of all the folks you see there that are so obviously doing all of those things! People are NUTS. Ok- here is my admission … I can’t stand iced tea. GRODY GRODY GROSS. Warm tea all day, but iced is just nasty. and I’m from the south! ;)
  30. Tracy Koeppen April 29, 2022 at 4:46 pm #
I'm sorry but I loved The Greatest Showman! It sounds like I'm in the minority here on that. I do agree with you on Gaga (except I loved her in A Star is Born) and ESPECIALLY Disney World. 100%. But I also agree it's not Walt Disney. He is classic along with the movies. I'm not a fan of Mandy Moore in This Is Us but everyone seems to adore her.
  31. Brandy K April 29, 2022 at 5:01 pm #
AGREE 100% but I’ll add Beyoncé
  32. JC April 29, 2022 at 5:36 pm #
What about anyone over 12 that obsesses over Disney and Disney World? I have a friend and a relative that are over 50 and are fixated on everything Disney, visit without children, etc. Cruises-forced socialization on a ship in the middle of the ocean-big nope!
  33. Sydney April 29, 2022 at 5:37 pm #
I love talking about unpopular opinions! Mine are that I HATE the Mandalorian Star Wars show so much (Are people just lying when they say they like this? Because it’s terrible.), Forrest Gump is extremely overrated and not good, books need to stop being made into movies/series (I love you Reese but STOP IT please), and peanut butter is gross and should not be as popular as it is
  34. Joanne April 29, 2022 at 6:23 pm #
I'm over here giggling as I am literally planning our Disney vacation! LOL. I am firmly in the love it camp (though I am totally griping at the rise in prices yet again and all the experiences and things they've taken away since we first began going over a dozen years ago).... and I will confess that my husband and I went just the two of us one year for 2 or 3 days and it was just as wonderful! But maybe I'm just a kid in an adult body because I do not get the appeal of coffee or wine or alcohol at all. They taste horrible to me! And while I think the Greatest Showman was okay I can not get into Hamilton at all. I tried watching it on Disney+ during the pandemic and I was 100% lost after 10 minutes. I had zero idea who these characters were or what they were singing about!
  35. Deb April 30, 2022 at 8:33 pm #
Hey Bev.. I’m going to begin this with saying the facts…I am 64 years young. I truly appreciate Lady Gaga for her talent. I loved what she did with Tony Bennett! She..in my opinion..has turned into someone I enjoy hearing about. Beyoncé …ehh…. Ehhh…. Moving onto Disney..my in laws had a house just outside of Disney so my husband and I would take our daughter to Disney a few times a year. Since she was 6 months old. The Disney then and the Disney now are completely different….sadly. My daughter has no desire to take her 3 kids there. The expense is incredible and we have soo many beautiful natural parks and resources in this country that are real which we would like to expose them to. My opinion…. I love your blog…you make me laugh!
