Friday Flotsam

FRRRRRRRibby jibby!

This is weird.

On my ED CAL (I hate that word and I feel like you might need to with me), I write out little topics I’d like to discuss with you on Fridays. Right? Right.

Well this morning I took a look at it, and it just says Nancy.

Nancy.

WHO IS NANCY?

Nancy Drew? Nancy from Stranger Things? Fancy Nancy? Maybe I need to refill my coffee because I have absolutely no idea who Na- OHHHHHHHHHHHH, YOU GUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUYS.

Nancy Meyers. I’m laughing so hard right now. NANCY MEYERS, OF COURSE OF COURSE. (this is a lot of all caps first thing in the day, I do realize)

Why is she so wonderful? It’s Nancy Meyers week, that’s what going on, and I wanted to ask you what your favorite Nancy Meyers movie is. Mine is Father of the Bride – obvz.

(I can do a really good Diane Keaton, maybe I’ll show you someday.)

I read this interview earlier this week and it was truly all the cozy I needed. It talks all about her iconic kitchens, turtlenecks on Diane Keaton, how her movies are movies about people, not really romantic comedies. They’re warm and fuzzy without being obnoxiously warm and fuzzy, ya know?

It’s Nancy Meyers vibe in my head for the rest of time, is basically what it boils down to. You, too?

I knew we understood each other.

(tip: go to Spotify and search for Nancy Meyers and you just watch what happens to your life.)

Speaking of, Aaron and I are going out today for a “pandemic date day!”

What does that mean exactly? I have no idea. All I know is that we’re driving around town together for hours before the kids are home for the rest of time. We’ll stop into French Market first thing for a to-go cappuccinos and croissants. Then we’ll head to the River Market for a visit to our fave antique mall, because I desperately need a lamp for my side of the couch. AND a new fireplace screen. Our current one (okay you remember what happened back over Valentine’s Day weekend pre-lockdown when my sister-in-laws were in town and we couldn’t get the gas to turn off and a glass pane shattered and those hot firemen came to save the day? Remember? No? Oh.) WELL, we replaced it with a very ’80s brass door cover thing (which I secretly love), but the doors stick and it makes Aaron curse.

SO, long story long, we’re thinking about taking it completely off and leaving the fireplace bare (RAW?) and just putting a screen there. I found this simple gold chevron screen thingy on Amazon and I sent it to my friend Sarah, and she said that the chevron is too trendy for my exquisite, timeless taste.

She didn’t say that last part, but I’m pretending she did.

So that’s today. Searching for something old-world meets clean. Lamp and screen. Oh that rhymed.

Obviously we’ll haul our sani and mask up every second. We’re not turd bucket maskholes.

Can I ask you something?

Because it’s happened at this house without us even being aware of it, and I need to know if it’s happening to you, too.

It’s awkward, embarrassing, icky and cliché. I’m just going to get this over with.

Aaron and I have started calling each other mom and dad around the kidsEWWWWWWWWWWW.

When did this happen? WHY did this happen? Can we do anything to fix it or are we just gross now?

I’ll say, “Let’s wait for Dad, he’ll want to see this.” And then I swallow the barf that rises in the back of my throat.

I’ll hear Aaron, “Go tell Mom her favorite part is on.” And my jowls droop a little lower in sadness.

We’re doomed, aren’t we? You can tell me.

POLL: are you into Reels? Would you want me to get into Reels in 2021? Why am I capitalizing Reels over and over?

First of all, I need to figure out the reels because I’m a grandma.

Secondly, are they obnoxious to you? I can’t decide. Some I like, some I want to throw in a river.

Where do you stand – To reel or not to reel?

Weekend plans?

Guess what we’re baking tomorrow! (you do remember how I’ve deemed Saturdays BAKE DAY. <still working on the title>)

We’re gonna attempt Chocolate Babka. I’m super attracted to the way it looks, plus I’m feeling like a project recipe. (yes I seriously just linked you to all the images on Google. try and love it.) I think we’ll use this recipe, but if you have a tried and true, send her on.

From this week, in case ya missed it! ::: Cheesy Biscuit Twists. UM, sinfully perfect. You’ll hate/love it. And then a full post devoted to my kitchenware! Pots, pans, dishes, all the things. Yew bist git.

Is it time for eggnog? Asking for a frie- me.

https://www.yellowthyme.com/how-to-make-dark-chocolate-babka-bread/ I use this recipe for my babka! It really is simple and makes a great base when experimenting with other flavors. I did a buttery/cinnamon/brown sugar filling this week and it was wonderful. Good luck!

I think as long as you don't call him Daddy while you're talking to him and it's only when referring to him for the children you're good.

I vote no on reels, but I am so old that I call my husband dad when I'm talking to the CATS! I mean, the kids have moved out, so...Enjoy the antiques mall. I love that place!

Personally not that into Reels, your Stories are perfect! But I am also an Old. Favorite Nancy Meyers: The Holiday - just held my annual holiday viewing. I really like Tender Jack Black. And the Golden Age of Hollywood subplot gets me every time! Enjoy your Pandemic Date! Our town usually has a nighttime Parade of Lights, but since it couldn't happen this year, organized home lighting competition and created maps by neighborhoods. Now there's a map of the winners! And it was a perfect Pandemic Date (since 18 yo daughter had ZERO interest in joining us).

I have baked Smitten Kitchen’s “Better chocolate babka” now twice this year and found it very easy to do and tastes great at the end of it all!

What are you serving for Christmas dinner? I feel like I remember reading you blog post on it or maybe you just shared on stories? In my head it was a perfect, low maintenance spread. Can you point me somewhere? help!

I have made the Chocolate Babka from Ottolenghi’s Jerusalem cookbook and it was fabulous. Highly recommend. https://smittenkitchen.com/2014/10/better-chocolate-babka/

Wait, so what did you used to call each other in front of the kids? I’m bamboozled that this is a new thing in your relationship. Are my husband and I like on a new plateau of gross because we’ve just always done this and this is just our normal life and we even occasionally accidentally do it when the kids aren’t around? Huh. I’m questioning everything.

Just our names! That is, when the kids aren't around. If I'm talking directly TO Aaron I'll still call him Aaron, but if the kids are involved I call him dad. NEVER daddy because that's beyond any help. Still I'm grossed out.

Please no reels. I get so much second hand embarrassment watching most of them!

I keep checking to see if you’re dropping another duet with your sis this year! But that’s probably another thing the mean stinking Covid took away!

Thank you for the article! In fact, for college students, these worlds in which we decorate the house and celebrate are extremely difficult period. And that is why I recommend using http://essaypapers.reviews/ in order to find a good service and not waste time doing a lot of homework and celebrating well.
