Friday Flotsam

Flooooooogy! I mean Froogy. Floody. Friigy. Friiddy. Friday.

I need help!

You’re like, UNSUBSCRIBE.

So, I’m speaking at Indulge Conference in LA in like, two weeks (omg), and I need to write my (45-minute! omg) presentation. But . . . I’m stuck. I don’t know what to saaaaayyyyaaaa. Oh don’t look so shocked. The presentation itself is all about relating past the recipe, how to blog to your own tune, yadda yadda YADDA.

THIS IS WHERE YOU COME IN. (besides introducing to me to Gillian Jacobs in LA because SOMEONE has to know her.)

And yes, I’m cheating. Don’t tell the conference that you’re giving me the answers to the test. You have the good stuff, man! What do you want to know? Anything in particular that, as an audience, you would be interested in, in regards to how to make this forum your own steez? In short, will you write this for me? KTHANKSBYEEEEE.

But seriously.

. . . no seriously.

write it for me?

. . . hello?

crap.

Stilllllll on the search for a hallway runner.

I’m afraid if I don’t find something soon I’m going to lay down bubble wrap.

child's play

The other night I was lying in bed trying to sleep, but I couldn’t because I was sooooooo hungry. Like, SO HUNGRY. And I’m never really hungry when I go to bed since I’m a grandma and go to bed at 7:43pm.

But this night, I was distracted by the murdery circus sounds coming from within, and it got me thinking about late-night cravings. Because LISTEN, would you believe that what I crave late at night is totally different than what I crave during normal business hours?

(you’re like, does she seriously think 7:43pm is late at night?)

Get this, CINNAMON TOAST. If I’m ever hungry at night, it’s for cinnamon toast. And I have no idea why. I never think about cinnamon toast in the light. Never. I think about cheese and chips and tacos and pizza and cheese and chocolate and cheese and salt and cheese. But never cinnamon toast.

But at NIGHT, totally. It’s a cinn.

What do you crave late at night? And it’s okay if you say Taco Bell because we all have demons living inside us.

But like, are your cravings polar opposite than what you normally crave during not-bat hours? Tell me!

TELL MEEEEEH.

I need a new show!

(Oh, right. Buffy.)

I need a new show!

(I’ll still watch Buffy on the side, don’t delete me from your life.)

Okay, Handmaid’s Tale (<–almost type tail. ouch.) comes out April 25th, so that means there’s time to slip another small-season show in there!

Let’s see, what have we already watched – Marvelous Maisel, LOVE, Grace and Frankie, ummmm. What else? What are you watching?

SPEAKING OF, I bought a new mascara, and so far it might be my favorite. You know how I wanted to get that sampler pack from Sephora you’ve all been raving about? They were OUT. And I threw a fit. She said they were revamping what goes inside the pack, and there was nothing in stock, nor could they even order it. Waaaah! Clearly I’m a mature adult about these things.

So INSTEAD, she recommended this girl. And I like it! I have to put two coats on, since my lashes are tiny pube sticks, but it works! Makes ’em RUL long, and thicker. I bought the full size, even though you all say to start with travel sizes. I forgot until I was back in my car and I punched the steering wheel.

Just kidding!

I punched Aaron.

Weekend plans?

This afternoon I’m attempting to make those French cheese puffs, gougères. And I’m GOUSCARED. Never made them before! Lots of you are giving me tips in Stories, which has me even more paralyzed. If they work, I’ll post them! If they don’t, well goodbye forever.

Also, tonight we’re going to this auction at the gremlins’ school, and it’s Cuban themed. HAVANA NIGHTS, guys. So yesterday I thrifted a terribly amazing brown and gold metallic-y dress with gold SEQUINS at the top. And brown metallic heels. Pop a bright red lip on, and I’m ready. We don’t have flowers yet in the yard, so I guess I’ll just stick a twig on my head. That’ll work.

Wait, did you x out?

Party of Five? Have you watched that one? The 90s in all its glory.

I’m no help on the speech part, but I do love that when I read your blog, I hear your voice. Have you watched Gossip Girl? I highly recommend it!

I can't remember, have you watched Friday Night Lights? Gah....I just want to WEEP when I think about it. And - don't tell anyone - but I don't even like football. Now that it's not on anymore I feel like I moved away from Dillon, TX and I just want to go back and visit all my old friends. Tim Riggins forever, man.

LOOOOOOVED FNL! I miss it. I miss Tim and Lyla. Waaah!

You should real-time (since you have 45 minutes) write a blog post LIVE from the conference. No really. It'll be interactive, engaging, totes grammable, and all those buzzwords. But really, your voice rings through in your blog - I imagine as you're writing you're also like, shouting out loud and talking to the walls as if they were us, your readers. So just literally write a Friday Flotsam and be like, "Ok now we are going to do my usual riff on the word friday. Don't hold back, people! If you wouldn't say it to your frandz, don't write it on your blog." Good luck.

Have you watched Schitt$ Creek? I am probably late to the party but I love it so much. I'm trying to take season 3 slowly as it's the last on Netflix and I don't get the real channel it's on. So. Funny!
    • Brittany April 6, 2018 at 11:30 pm #
I second this show!! It’s a quick watch, super funny and I think you would like Moira! (She’s in the show)

Call the Midwife is great! A BBC show that's on Masterpiece right now, and all the back seasons are on Netflix. I loveeee it! Plus I want to bring their slang back ("old bean," "I'm in the family way"...GAH)
  8. Meredith April 6, 2018 at 10:40 am #
there's a new series on netflix. takes place at a high school in the 90's. everything sucks. loved it and a super quick watch
  9. Anonymous April 6, 2018 at 10:51 am #
Schitt’s Creek and Life in Pieces are both great! Short, light, easy to watch.
  10. Kate April 6, 2018 at 10:51 am #
If you like SJP and have HBO, try Divorce. It's smartly written and funny. I so love Molly Shannon in it. There's also the Franco/JFK show on Netflix. I think on Netflix? Anyway, everything I am recommending can be communicated in three letters, apparently.

Not sure if you're only looking for lighter shows, but we just finished Ozarks. It was really good, and you really never knew what was going to happen next.
  12. Anne April 6, 2018 at 11:44 am #
We have our kids school auction this weekend too! The theme is KENTUCKY DERBY and I'm wearing a fascinator... I can't wait! Do you think anyone else will be ballsy enough to wear a fascinator???
  13. Anonymous April 6, 2018 at 12:22 pm #
Check out Casual! Seven Seconds! Insecure!
  14. Emma April 6, 2018 at 12:29 pm #
CW shows got me right now....riverdale in all its high school angst and izombie in all its fun but not scary zombie-ness!
  15. Amanda April 6, 2018 at 12:30 pm #
The only thing I'm currently binging is the original Will & Grace. Every show you mentioned is on my ever-growing list of things to catch up on. I think after I finish W&G I'm going to start Shameless because so many people talk about it and I feel so left out lol I second the person that mentioned Friday Night Lights. It's still one of my favorites. Jason Katims has a new show, RISE, and it's very FNL (style wise, anyway) and I'm loving it so much!!! Um what else do I really love??? OH! Did you watch the first season of The Bold Type? I mean, yeah it's just the first season so you won't have a lot of episodes but IT IS SO GOOD. Do you watch Jane the Virgin? It's my most favorite and the only show I refuse to miss.
  16. Jennifer C. April 6, 2018 at 2:01 pm #
The Americans or Mad Men if you're craving an hour long drama. Mad Men will consume your life though so...warning: you will want to smoke all the time and day drink.
    • Jen Renee April 6, 2018 at 7:43 pm #
Ooooo, Mad Men is the best!!! I miss it ?
  17. Denise Dunn April 6, 2018 at 2:24 pm #
David Leibovitz just made gougeres on his Insta story yesterday! After making the dough he simply scooped them onto the baking pan with a smallcookie/ice cream scoop. So much easier than using a pastry bag. Oh and I agree watch Schitt's Creek. Extremely entertaining. Have you watched New Girl?
  18. Becky Zea April 6, 2018 at 2:30 pm #
I second Schitt's creek, it's really funny! I am watching Mozart in the Jungle on Amazon Prime when my husband is working and when he is home we are watching Santa Clarita Diet on Netflix. It's like the female version of Dexter, but funny!
  19. Tara April 6, 2018 at 3:20 pm #
I agree with Meredith up above. Everything Sucks on netflix. Quick season of a co Romulus story about 90’s high school. Loved it even though I went to high school in the mid ‘80’s.
  20. Heather April 6, 2018 at 4:09 pm #
I really love Jane the Virgin (seasons 1-3 are on Netflix & since season 4 is almost over with it should be added later this year).
  21. Christi April 6, 2018 at 4:16 pm #
I imagine that bubble wrap would be sooooooooooooo loved by the kids. But you might want to wait until they are teens trying to sneak out.
  22. Sam April 6, 2018 at 4:51 pm #
I also LERRRVE Handmaids Tale and Grace and Frankie and Gilmore Girls. Try Divorce with SJP...really good. Big Little Lies is really good too. And one of my all time favs....Catastrophe. Soooo goooood and on Prime!
  23. Diane April 6, 2018 at 6:01 pm #
I so Love Schitts Creek and we are watching The Crown now and absolutely Love it!!!!!!! I mean anthing with the Royals, right???
  24. Jen Renee April 6, 2018 at 6:45 pm #
Netflix Shows: The Crown, Grace of Monaco (the whole glam royalty thing) I’m also interested in The Good Place and Wild Oats but haven’t watched them yet. The speech: I teach college courses and the key is practice. Write notes however you’re comfortable (full sentences, bullet points, etc.) but they’re just to remind you of what your next talking point is and maybe some facts/stats. Use your own words! The audience responds sooo much better to that. (And I have a feeling you’ll be great at that ;) So maybe practice standing in front of the gremlins giving your speech. You’ll get a feel for standing and speaking and hear where your speech falls flat and where it’s great. Good luck! Loooooove your blog and use probably 4 of your recipes per week. Thanks!! ?
  25. Heather April 6, 2018 at 6:47 pm #
Before you said cinnamon toast that’s what I was thinking about! My weird night craving is a fried egg sandwich, it came from being pregnant with my twins and my husband forcing me to eat tons of protein but then became a fun ritual, and it kinda stuck. Anyway, check out Santa Clarita Diet, Drew Barrymore is hilarious in it! Re your speech: what stands out is that you have more to talk about than just food (if people want just recipes there’s a cookbook for that, blogs are also a form of entertainment). Also, you ask your audience lots of questions (best way to keep people engaged).
  26. Holly April 6, 2018 at 9:35 pm #
Santa Clarita Diet on Netflix! Drew Barrymore. Very different and very funny!
  27. Morgan April 6, 2018 at 9:56 pm #
YES, Call the midwife! So, so good. And Downton Abbey is amazing, of course. Also really like Divorce and if you’re looking for something a little lighter, Younger and The Bold Type are great!
  28. Amy April 6, 2018 at 10:26 pm #
Bob Ross: Beauty is Everywhere on Netflix. Relax while watching a man with perfect Maltese hair do oil painting on canvas, with a soothing voice.
  29. Any D. April 7, 2018 at 7:03 am #
Everything Sucks on Netflix is awesome! ‘90s throwback with a killer ‘90s sound track...it’s only about 10 episodes long. Check it out
    • Bev Weidner April 8, 2018 at 10:55 am #
Started it last night! LOVE IT, thank you!

I watched The Good Place because I can't get enough Kristen Bell in my life. oh my, how good it is! Ted Danson is awesome, as are the rest of the cast. If you're a Kimmy Schmidt fan / enjoy the quirky characters, you wouldn't have a reason to not love.
  31. Becky April 9, 2018 at 6:26 am #
Try watching Santa Clarita Diet or Imposters?
  32. Tracy April 9, 2018 at 2:52 pm #
Netflix: Seven Seconds or The Crown!
  33. Nancy April 11, 2018 at 11:51 am #
You should watch Bloodline on Netflix. It's not like what you usually watch but it's not what I usually watch either but I became obsessed. And it's got your boy from Friday Night Lights; I believe his name is Kyle Chandler. I was also possessed with Party of Five when it was on; such a great show. I think I dug it so much because I always wanted a big messy family like that......
  34. Nancy April 11, 2018 at 11:52 am #
I meant to say obsessed but maybe I am possessed :)
