Friday Flotsam

I gave up on Ally McBeal.

WAAAAAAAH. I know. I know! Don’t paper cut me.

I think I was in the wrong mindset when I started watching it, because it never really crawled into my soul cavity and ate at every crevice like Gilmore Girls or Felicity did. I gave up. And during season 1! Right after Christmas. That’s where I ended. Such a quitter.

BUT, I think what I might do is pick it up another time? Maybe next year in the spring? Maybe. We’ll see.

BUT BUUUUT, I have three shows I’m wanting to tackle, and I need your help.

Okay:

Breaking Bad, The Handmaid’s Tale, or Thirtysomething.

Wait, why are you crying?

I’ve always been so curious about Thirtysomething! My girlfriend (who watches all these shows with me and still laments the moment I threw in the Ally towel) wants to watch it, so we’re waiting for the right moment. Is it now? WHY DO YOU HAVE THAT LOOK ON YOUR FACE?

Also, I finally finished Stranger Things 2 this week, and ooooooohdeargawd. I’ve decided that Steve and his hair can come live in my mouth.

And Kevin Pearson. Ugh, even in his worst state, he is still painfully smokin’ gorgeous.

Oh – WHO DO YOU THINK WOULD WIN IN A FIGH- actually, this needs its own section.

Hold on!

WHO DO YOU THINK WOULD WIN IN A FIGHT:

Kevin Pearson vs. Steve-and-his-hair-ington.

I mean, do I even have to ask?

I’ve been meaning to share this podcast with you guys for so long! I know you all know super woman Chrissy Powers. She’s got this super sassy podcast called Sure, Babe, and she interviewed me a while back about motherhood, balancing the workload, WINE, thrifted Levi’s, all the things. Take an earhole peepsy if ya want! My episode is #3 at the bottom of that list.

I actually haven’t listened to it (number one rule is to never ever, under any circumstance listen to yourself being interviewed. your life and psyche are much better off without. fact.), so I have no idea what I said.

You’re welcome?

KANSAS CITY, (sorry to scream at you) where do you take your kids to see Santa? We’ve done Ward Parkway Mall (unbelievably lame), and Oak Park Mall (actually amazing because you can schedule your appointment with Santa so there are no horrible lines with 97 billion coughing gremlins AND you get to get ON.A.SLEIGH and go for a ride in a mini movie theater with fake wind in your face.) But I’m curious about other places IN THE METRO (said like a weatherman) to take them. We’ll probably fall back on Oak Park, but are there any other super cute options that I desperately need to know about?

Yes it’s November 17th and I’m asking about Santa. Wanna make something of it?

fall leaves

Weekend plans?

Listen to this, I get to run errands this morning b y m y s e l f. Ikea, the plaza, a couple other places. I can’t even wrap my head around this magic. If you see me out and I’m talking to myself in a state of blissful weepiness, just look away. It’s okay. I’m okay.

On Sunday we’re headed out to our friends’ FARM (you know my obsession for this place) for their annual Fakesgiving. This is year, um, 15? Insane. I’m taking some homemade cheesy bread (that I’ll DEFINITELY put on the blog after Thanksgiving) and a roasted garlic compound butter. Also known as life.

You saw this from yesterday, right? Lots of you are already trying and it LOVING it, which gives me giddy pants. The biggest giddy pants ever. (<–too much?) And don’t forget about this mixtape for next weeeeekaaaaa.

SPEAKING OF, tell me something. Are you hosting next week? Are you nervous? Are you traveling or staying put? Will you go all-out traditional, or are you daring to change up the old-fashioned recipes with some wacko twist?

You know I need these details to thrive in this world.

Breaking Bad is an absolute must despite what your normal favorite genre might be.

I used to LOVE Thirty Something back when it aired on network TV. I know I’m showing my age! I’d definitely give it a try though. Fakesgiving sounds like tons of fun. It reminds me of some friends I worked with many moons ago that had a farm and they would invite everyone out on the same day to cut Christmas trees 🎄 and a potluck meal. Good memories 😁

Family Tree has the cutest Santa backgrounds but I think it's a line (I don't know for sure?). Thanks for the heads up about Oak Park! I may check that out. There's also a place at Town Center you can make appointments. Growing up we always did Crown Center...can't speak to it as an adult but LOVED it as a kid ;)

I couldn't get in to Breaking Bad. I know it is a wildly unpopular opinion BUT I tried watching for 3 seasons and every time I said I couldn't get in to it I would get a reply that the later seasons (particularly the last) were soooo good and I have to keep watching. But I have to like the first 4 seasons to even get to the last season so that was flawed logic to me. I am hosting Friendsgiving this Sunday and I am actually very zen about it. I have enough people coming that I think I have almost all of the sides covered so extra cooking outside of the turkey are minimal. I am ignoring that part of me that wants to have a panic attack about someone not bringing enough of something to feed 15+ people. I already know what bottle of wine I am going to start drinking while cooking (most important decision) and I have your playlist to listen to. Either I have somehow mastered Thanksgiving stress or there is some disaster heading my way like the Titantic iceberg (in that case, I have wine). Happy Weekend!

I just finished Breaking Bad with my husband! One of the best shows we've ever watched, for sure. I did love The Handmaid's Tale and you can finish that really quickly!

    Parenthood! Maybe you already have?

Ohhhh, I lived, breathed, ate and slept Parenthood. The series finale all those years ago was the entire reason I turned to red lipstick! ;)

I watched first two episodes of Breaking Bad and couldn't get in to it. Maybe one day i will give it another try. However, you MUST watch Handmaids Tale. YOU MUST! OH MY GOSH!!! I was not aware there was a book out so i am currently reading the book.

    Breaking Bad for sure!

I've never seen Breaking Bad but I vote Thirtysomething. I loved it way back in high school (I think?) which makes me think i need to rewatch it. Also, I noticed that last week's episode of This is Us was either directed or produced by Ken Olin who was Michael in Thirtysomething. Get on it.

Asking about Xmas things in mid-November isn't too early. Where I live, in Hobart (southern most city in Australia, but more like a big town)) we had the Christmas pageant today! So the season has officially started. We don't have Thanksgiving though, so perhaps you usually wait till after that.

I watched thirtysomething when it was on and loved it. however, toward the end of the series it got a bit too dark for me. i like happy shows and it definitely was not that.

Santa at Von Maur. A friend swears by this. No lines. And definitely Handmaid's Tale.
  17. Becky K. November 18, 2017 at 7:53 pm #
The Handmaid’s Tale is a must watch, but it’s IN-TENSE. If you’re looking for something to escape the harsh reality of our time then don’t watch it. I never watched the other two so I can’t attest to them being good or not.

Breaking Bad was amazing - still a HUGE favorite TV show in my book. I tried to get into Better Call Saul (prequel ish to Breaking Bad, mostly just Saul's character) didn't love it as much. Ozark has put a nice bandaid on my soul for missing Breaking Bad though (Sort of like Supernatural put a bandaid on my soul after Buffy ended)... That being said HANDMAIDS TALE IS SO GOOD, but I will warn you - I had sleepless nights after watching it worrying WHAT IF!!! BUT STILL, so good! P.S. Steve is just the most!
