Brunch at American Slang - Intercontinental KC

Listen to this crazy dream I had!

You’re like, “Or not?”

Two nights ago I woke up over and over and over having the same dream. Stuck in it. Not able to get out of it. And I would call it a nightmare, but let me tell you about it first, and you tell me if it was a dream or a nightmare.

I was stuck in a giant bottle of rosé and couldn’t get out.

(stop laughing.)

There’s me, all Honey-I-Shrunk-the-Lush-style, clinging to the inside of the rim of the bottle, trying not to fall down IN THE TANK OF ROSÉ and drown.

I would say it’s a nightmare, only because my bedroom seemed hot every time I woke up. But you know how you don’t eeeeven have the energy to get out of bed and walk the 10 feet to the thermostat and up the temp? No way, man. Too tired.

I’d also say it’s a nightmare because I couldn’t breathe out of my nose. I’ve been sick all week, and the nose spray was all the way out on the kitchen table, and if there’s no way I’ll get up to change the temperature, then there’s no way in HAYELL I’ll get up to walk across the entire house in the complete dark to get the nose spray. Even if both tasks need to be accomplished at 11:30pm. And 1:45am. And 3:15am. And one more time at 4:35am. Not doing it, bud.

But then AGAIN, it might have just been a dream, because – well, rosé.

Do I need to lay off the rosé?

Be extremely careful in the way you answer that.

Remember that old perfume from the ’90s, EXCLAMATION?

It was like, a white bottle in the shape of a dot, and then the lid was a black line, making the exclamation point. I mean ! Remember that? Do you think it still exists?!

I guess I should take the five seconds and ask Dr. Goog.

Hold on.

Holy crap, LOOK. It’s everywhere! I loved that perfume! I bet it smells like donkey feces today.

I also loved Tea Rose. Do you remember that one? And Sunflowers! AND POISON. DO YOU REMEMBER POISON? I could never afford Poison as a tween, but I yoinked a sample at a grocery store once, and felt suuuper fancy wearing it to . . . Sunday School.

What were your favorite junior high perfumes?! I need to remember more brands that I’ve forgotten about so I can squeal in nostalgia right as Aaron walks in the room because it’s his faaavorite thing in the world when I get really loud about things from the ’90s.

Fresh loaves at Farm to Market Bread Co - KC

OHHHH DAWSON.

Joey got mugged. I found the mugger creepily cute.

Joey likes her English professor, but all I see when I look at Ken Marino is his hilarious moment in Wet Hot American Summer when he crashes the kid school bus while singing “Danny’s Song” by Kenny Loggins. “And in the morning when I rise, bring a tear of joy to my eyes, and tell m- OH F#&%$!” Best.

Joey sang on stage with Charlie’s band and I’ll never be able to unsee that.

Pacey and Audrey are hot and heavy and I haaaaaate it.

Don’t get me wrong! I love Audrey. She reminds me of a close friend of mine. Huge lips, quick witted, sarcastic but with a hint of unconditional encouragement and a twinkle in her eye. (Yes, Ash I’m talking about you.) But I just CANNOT deal with the way Pacey looks at her. That George Clooney smile is only for Joey! Joe. Jo?

I don’t like Dawson’s hair this short.

Jen makes me straight loco. I was semi sort of maybe starting to kind of like her a teeny tiny bit, but I changed my mind. I can’t do it. While her HAIR ain’t so heinous these days, her everything else just bugs. WHERE IS THAT GIANT BOTTLE OF ROSÉ WHEN I NEED IT.

She also just broke up with Dawson. Yay!

Six episodes left of Season 5, which I’ll definitely finish this weekend.

You’re like, “. . . great. . . can’t wait.”

I feel like there are two camps of people in this world.

One camp pours the yeast over the warm water and lets it sit on the top of the water, trusting it will fall into the water, beginning to dissolve and grow.

And the other camp pours the yeast over the warm water, and then stirs it just a tiny bit. Ensuring that the yeast mixes in with the water in order to dissolve and grow.

Which camp are you in?

Weekend plans?

We’re supposed to get 56 inches of rain this weekend, which normally I’d be amped up for (<–sorry about the words amped and up), but I have a huge outdoor weekend shoot, so I’m already extra stabby.

Buuuut, I seriously just found Tea Rose perfume on Amazon right now, so this just might turn things around.

Tell me not to click.

TELL ME NOT TO CLICK.

I'm never sure what is correct when you want to adjust the thermostat. If you want it colder in the house are you turning it up or turning it down? I used to tell my mom "JUST TELL ME THE NUMBER!" Lol!!

CK One and Tommy Girl all the way! I think I liked the orange Candie's one too but I can't remember what it smells like, must find immediately! And none of us will ever unsee Joey singing, unfortunately

EXCLAMATION IS (WAS) THE BEST!! (Sorry for exclaiming.) The hallways of my high school probably still contain the essence. Sunflower, too. A couple of years ago, a coworker walked in, and I was hit by a wave of nostalgia. "OMG! You smell so good! What are you wearing???" (I may have come off a bit intense.) Her response? Oh, Sunflower by Elizabeth Arden. Of course.

For me it was 80's perfumes ...Ciara, Giorgio and Wild Musk. (ew!)

I am dying over this post b/c I literally woke up 3 times last night hot as hell and refused to get up and turn up the A/C. Also, loved exclamation and wore it for years! Also, trying to think if I ever realized the bottle made a literal exclamation point. Hmm...

Safari was my go to perfume!
  7. Anonymous August 4, 2017 at 11:35 am #
Camp pour the water over the yeast! That way they are sure to be mixed without any stirring :)

TEA ROSE!! CLICK IT! DO IT!! Seriously that was my Jr High perfume. Also this Liz Claiborne one that came in a triangle shaped bottle. And Tommy girl! I think drowning in a bottle of Rose is the way to go actually.

Colors by Benetton; Malibu Musk; Tribe; Electric Youth (Debbie Gibson!); Vanilla Fields I think I might still like Colors, even now, but the rest.......RIP.
  10. Rachele August 4, 2017 at 12:34 pm #
Liz Claiborne in the triangle was the go to for my friends. I loved Colors by Benetton. And we used to love it when guys wore Drakkar.

Yup. Wonder if perfume trends are regional?

Oh this is so fun and nostalgic and I love that you bring these things up Bev! My very first perfume was Baby Soft lol when I wasn't sneaking my moms Jean Naté or my older sisters musk body spray in the metal canister with a yellow top. I got Exclamation in my xmas stocking in 5th grade and then of course later I wore Benetton, Liz Claiborne, Tresor, Happy, Acqua D' Gio and my favorite...ANAIS~ANAIS!

TRIBE! and Love's Baby Soft. Hello, 1995. How are ya?
  14. Amanda August 4, 2017 at 1:31 pm #
BEV! I totally remember exclamation! I don't think I ever wore it. I remember being into Baby Soft but that was just because it was 'the thing'. I honestly don't even like wearing perfumes at all. Never have, still don't. So glad I finally know someone who does not like Jen. I never liked her and really just wanted her to go back to New York. Sometimes I would have been ok with her taking Dawson with her.

My very first perfume was Electric Youth.. like the Debbie Gibson song. Had a hot pink swirly thing in the bottle and a black top. This was also around the time that I had NKOTB bedding and puffy paint t-shirts with a little plastic clip thingy on the bottom corner. YASSS!
  16. Bee August 4, 2017 at 3:59 pm #
I actually found Sunflowers at Meijer a few weeks ago. Of course I had to open and take a whiff. Smelled EXACTLY like 1996. My other favorites were Charlie White and Charlie Sunshine. :)
  17. Erin H August 4, 2017 at 5:35 pm #
Oh my gosh. Exclamation all the way. I rocked that while I dreamed of being Debbie Gibson, Tiffany, or a Bangle.
  18. Anonymous August 4, 2017 at 9:47 pm #
Baby Soft and Eternity byCalvin Klein! Wore with my ZCavarrici and creepers shoes! Pegged jeans and turtlenecks with sweaters. Don't forget the aquanet! The higher the bangs the better!!!

I've always trusted the yeast, but then I rarely question anything in life. And my teenage scents of choice were Tommy Girl, So...? and the strawberry fragrance oil from The Body Shop. Then I discovered Ralph Lauren and it all went out the window. I felt like a real grown-up.

Oh ma gosh! I have to take it back to 1988 - freshman year in college and EVERYONE had Liz Claiborne triangle shaped perfume. I remember I got a new RED bottle for my dorm room. I also loved Benetton's unisex fragrance. But the nightmares are reserved for all of the Giorgio in the air in the 90's.
  21. Lydia Melamedas August 5, 2017 at 7:45 pm #
Bev! The sulfates in rose are giving you a stuffed up nose! No joke, I can't drink a french rose because I turn into a stuffy-nose-monster. So, you're welcome. I solved your dreams. (and gave you a new nightmare?) sorrrrry.
  22. Lisa August 5, 2017 at 11:43 pm #
I loved Sweet Honesty by Avon. I don't really wear perfume anymore but have recently smelled Poison which I used to practically bathe in, and I gotta say, I still love that fragrance.
  23. Sarah August 6, 2017 at 3:18 pm #
I wore Gap Heaven and Dream and I seriously still do.

CK One and Victoria's Secret body sprays were my jam in middle school. We'd be in the locker room after gym bathing in the stuff. Do you follow Busy Phillips on IG? She's hilarious and is a daily IG stories poster. You're getting close to my favorite DC episode of all timmmmeee. Can't wait to see you post about it.
    • Bev Weidner August 7, 2017 at 2:07 pm #
I do follow her on IG! (and stories) She's so fun. I'm starting Season 6 tonight - have I missed your favorite episode?!
  25. Kayle (The Cooking Actress) August 8, 2017 at 9:41 pm #
I agree with all your Dawson thoughts. I also stir the yeast and water. Because I'm paranoid lol
  26. Jennifer August 9, 2017 at 10:01 pm #
OMG, I completely forgot about Exclamation! Hahahaha! I'm so old. ?
  27. Kristen September 8, 2017 at 10:35 pm #
I use to sneak Liz Claiborne from my moms dresser....AS if she couldn't smell me. Loved CKone and maybe some Clinic happy or Pear Glacé from VC....rambling. Basically I just rubbed on the free samples from Teen Vogue....don't tell my mom I read that.
