Friday Flotsam

pink flowers in the winter

You know what makes me bonkers? (you’re like, everything ever in the history of ever?)

DUVETS.

And duvet COVERS.

And COMFORTERS.

Why do all these words exist? Why isn’t it just – BEDSPREAD?

When I was growing up, we always called it bedspread. We had the fitted sheet, the flat sheet, a blanket, and then the bedspread. Could be thick. Could be thin. Whatevs. And then in the winter, we might have another thicker blanket on top of the bedspread. The end. Simple math. No stress.

BUT NOOOOOW it’s all dumb with these fancy words like comforter and duvet and duvet INSERT and dust ruffles (what the hay is that nonsense? dust ruffles should not be existing.) and so on.

This is the thing – I fell victim to Ikea’s pretty line of simple white duvets (what I thought were bedspreads, like a normal, sensible person) with super minimal, yet dainty details. But as these “DUVETS” hang on the wall, they’re all thick and cushion-y and glorious. But in the package, this is where they trick you – it says “Duvet COVER.” It’s basically an empty, flimsy Santa bag. You apparently STUFF this cover thingy with a foreign insert of some sort. What am I supposed to do, go collect loose duck feathers at the neighborhood park? Buy 50 hundred thousand bags of cotton balls? Where do you get this flippin’ insert?! If you look up “duvet insert” on the IKEA website, you get “no results found, SUCKER.”

How on Earth do I find this DUVET INSERT???

Ohhhhh wait hold on. Target has them. So does every other store.

Ever.

Never mind.

Carry on.

Okay now I’m excited actually.

Look at how plush this one is from BirdBathandBeyonce.

Wait! Is a comforter SYNONYMOUS with duvet? Are they the same dang thing?

Why don’t we just call it duvetforter, to keep it simple? No wonder Ikea called me an idiot!

I’m so glad we had this talk.

(This is the one I wanted from Ikea, but Aaron’s head lit on fire and fell off when I showed him. So.)

Speaking of, I need help!

I’m in major mega mama need of a large, cream serving bowl. Not cream as in heavy cream, but cream as in off white. Something simple, something shallow, something soybeans.

Just kidding about soybeans. I just wanted to finish out the sentence with another “so” word.

Do any of you know of or have a gorgeous Etsy shop that I could check out? I found a stunning bowl in the U.K., but it was going to cost me my liver and my pancreas and my elbows to ship over. Which I know isn’t a horrible deal, but you know.

Aaron's workshop

Oh! I nearly forgot – Aaron launched his new website! So instead of shopping on Etsy, you can now find him directly at Flotsamist. Dot com. Obviously. Sorry.

It looks soooo good, and I’m just beaming for him. The site is run by this lovely gal Kate, for those interested in website shniz. And maybe go shopping while you’re on it, because I’m positive my kids are going to need braces.

Also, do any of you know how to bulk delete emails in Gmail? I need help with my life.

Weekend plans?

We’re kicking off week FOUR of FFFFFFFFFFF! Or, Fabulous Friday Film Flashback Fun, for long. As you may recall, so far we’ve watched Two for the Road, Bonnie and Clyde, and Barefoot in the Park – WHICH – I need to beg you to watch. It’s seriously so funny and so cute and I think I love Jane Fonda. She is GREAT. I never knew how sassy and sarcastic she is! The film is based on a play written by Neil Simon (which you know is going to be good). It mainly takes place in newlyweds Jane and Robert Redford’s NYC apartment. She’s super vivacious, and he’s ultra conservative, and together they’re basically a hysterical disaster. But in love! I love it. I LOVE IT. Watch it. The end.

Tonight we’re watching . . . Pink Panther! The original, you know. 1963, Peter Sellers, Robert Wagner (hi, Natalie Wood’s hub). Can you believe I’ve never seen it?! NEVER. I hear it’s side-splittingly funny. A lot like Naked Gun? Is that right? I’m making Vietnamese Chicken Salads for dinner, and pairing it with a Marietta Cellars red blend, the Armé. I’m only telling you all of this because I’m a psycho for details.

Also, how much coffee is “too much coffee?”

Asking for a friend.

duvet inserts can be bought at just about any store. even target has them, and they come in varieties. Some have feathers, some fiberfill. just depends on how much you want to spend and the weight you like. i get a mid grade one, because we live in Texas and it is not super cold. Except for freak days like today when the temperature drops 20 degrees from the day before.

Yes yes! That's what I saying in the post - I saw that Target has them! Now I just have to decide what kind to get. Problems! ;)

A down comforter goes inside the duvet. Ikea sells all types of down comforters. How do I know this? I live in California where down comforters are not necessary!! But there ya have it... easy peasy....

I found the most amazing white dishes and serving dishes (they also had off-white!) at World Market for SUCH good prices! I don't know if you have one by you, but their website is very user friendly!

Bird Bath and Beyoncé....love it! Crate and Barrel usually has basic bowls, sometimes with an interesting little something going on. I think most of theirs are pure white, though. Sometimes I find simple but fun basics at Home Goods. Do you have that out where you live? It's part of the Marshalls, TJ Maxx group but it just has home stuff. They also have amazing deals on duvet covers, maybe even the duvet itself. I've purchased two white duvet covers (one is plain and the other is pique) and they were $29.99 and $39.00 for the cover and two shams. Score! With kids and dogs, it's good to have a spare if you can get them that cheap.

I'm definitely familiar with HomeGoods! Matter of fact, I did a commercial with them last year. :) https://business.facebook.com/BevCooks/?business_id=1615206395453841

SO with you on the whole duvet thing. We bought one from ikea, and to make it even more annoying it's like two inches shorter than the insert/comforter so it bunches up at the bottom, looks dumb and makes it bottom heavy so it's always sliding down the foot of the bed...grrr!

Love the Pink Panther. Classic- the whole line of them: Pink Panther Strikes Again, Return of The Pink Panther, etc. "Does your dog bite?" Hate duvets, but love the clean look of duvet covers. It's a problem. Knotting them on the inside, the duvet getting lost and bunchy inside the cover, the fabric twisting, resulting in a blind rage.

Try TJ Maxx (or Homegoods) for a comforter! They always have a ton at the one near me, and the prices are always good. :)

I'd also love to know the answer to the coffee question. I have a problem.

I hate duvets. There, I said it. And I'm sorry but I'm going to burst your duvet bubble. They are a PITA because every time you wash the cover, you have to insert the giant thing back inside. Ugh. I just always hated that part. I had to stand on the bed and try and fling it out to the floor to get the corners all the way down to the bottom. But here's a tip if you want your duvet to be fluffy. Buy a cover that is a size smaller than the actual duvet filler. It ends up looking more poofy. Have you heard of coverlets? I think they're new. They are thin but like bedspreads. Love Barefoot in the Park! I want to watch it again now.

There is an easy way to get duvet into duvet cover. You tube it. Takes me under a minute. Europeans have been all under duvets for years and they're not stupid when it comes to these things.

I would suggest not getting a down insert or a down anything for that matter. The birds are plucked while they are alive and it is very painful for them and many times they are injured. It is not a pretty sight, bloody too. I would look for something organic - maybe bamboo or some kind of eco fill. Pink Panther - you will love! Peter Sellers was the best. He made the kind of movies that no matter how many times you watch them they are still hilarious! Some of my favorite movies are What About Mary, Slumdog Millionaire, Pulp Fiction (of course), One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest, Crash, American Beauty, Amadeus and a million others. Happy Weekend!

I hate to tell you that I loved the first half (maybe even first 2/3rds) of the Pink Panther, but seriously disliked the remaining parts. It found it lost its momentum and go kind of boring, but hopefully that won't happen to you! Peter Sellers is amazing, but I thought David Niven and Capucine really stole the show.

    Bedspread for the win.

Oh, and check out Hayneedle. They have everything! Tons of bedding and serveware at great prices. They are having a big sale now.

What is this "Too Much Coffee" you speak of?

I worked in linens at a major dept. store. Allow me to educate you... Duvet: down or poly filled quilt that is always plain white and needs a duvet cover to be stuffed into. Watch a you tube video to learn how to stuff correctly and quickly. No flat sheet required. You wash the duvet cover and you can own many covers to change things up but never have to replace the duvet itself. Comforters are poly filled and need no cover. They are stand alone that already are patterned and colored etc. you need a flat sheet underneath as comforters are too big to be washing all the time. Once you buy that comforter you are stuck with that fabric forever. Bedspreads and dust ruffles are from the 70's. Never think of them again. Remove the word"insert" from your linens lexicon. No such thing. Stick with the simple term duvet to refer to what goes inside the duvet cover.

My husband and I watched "How to Steal a Million" with Audrey and Peter O'Toole last weekend and it was absolutely fantastic! It's on Netflix. I highly recommend.

I have that botanical duvet cover from IKEA :) and a white and gray one. IKEA sells the actual duvets too... all different types of them. Not sure why they weren't coming up on the site for you but they definitely have them in store in varying levels of warmth! Growing up, I only ever had comforters, so duvets were kind of a whole new world to me too. But, they are way easier to throw in the washing machine at home than a bulky comforter! And IKEA's prices on the covers can't be beat. We just have one duvet and then switch out the covers when we feel like mixing it up. Now, if you find an easy way to get the duvet into the cover, please do let us know. I usually end up crawling inside to get it all straightened out.

I just wanted to say...that ikea duvet cover is the one i HAVE, but then i bought the wrong size duvet and so it always bunches up on one end, but the delicate green floral-y botanically pattern is pretty and I just decided to throw the whole thing over an ugly easy chair and pretend that's what it's for.
