Winter Trees

I NEED MORE ZEN.

Hold on, sorry. Let me try that again.

I need more zen.

Contrary to popular belief, I’m not the most calm person in the world. I know you probably find that hard to believe, given that all my blog posts are written smoothly, with a soft, cohesive velvet touch to the ears, never confusing, not at all jumpy or restless in my thoughts, always guiding you along in a tranquilizing canoe of butter, I KNOW.

But.

I need more zen.

Don’t get me wrong here. I don’t need more happy. I’ve got happy! I’ve got happy oozing out of my pores like a garlic vodka tornado. I just need more zeeeeeen. I need to relaaaaax more. Breaaaaaathe more. Streeeeeetch more. Maybe drink that one psychedelic tea from Zoolander, I dunno.

How do you zen?

Wait, POLL! ::::

How do you zen? Do you zen out in the morning or night? When the kids take a nap? Do you find it better to zen at the START of the day? Or to END your day with zen? Because like, I light candles and incense, listen to classical music and drink an afternoon tea once in a while, yadda yadda. But I don’t think it’s zen-y enough. I want to be ultra zen-y.

OMG I’M SO EXCITED TO GET IDEAS FROM YOU. (!!)

Sorry sorry, let me give that another go.

Inhaaaaale. I’m mildly amped to soak up your insight and gain knowledge on my impending zenage journey. Bless you and Godspeed and Mecca Lecca Hi, Mecca Hiney Ho. Exhaaaaale.

How did I do?!

Layers of wood

You know how at the end of Wheel of Fortune, when the bell rings and Pat goes, “Aaand it’s time for the final spin – blah blah.” And HE spins the wheel, right? HE leans down and spins the giant wheel, and whatever it lands on is what they play.

WELL, what if it lands on Bankrupt? Or Lose a Turn? It never, ever lands on either of those for Pat, yet the entire show is filled with loser and bankruptcy spins. How does he not ever land on either of those? HOW?!

I’m telling you, if I had more zen, this wouldn’t keep me up at night.

Gremlins on a Bridge

Let’s talk podcasts.

Do you listen to/obsess over any podcasts that I ABSOLUTELY need to know about? I’ve never been a huge podcast listener, but now that Gilmore Girls has violently left me for dead, I sob constantly and am desperate to fill the void. I even went and had a Dermaplane yesterday, just to remove all the rotting skin cells that reminded me of our bittersweet end.

But I really want to get into podcasts! Nothing super serious. Maybe some murder. Romance. Puzzles. You know.

What do you listen to? I’ve got “Talking as Fast as I Can” on my list. Which I know isn’t technically a podcast, but I want to listen to Lauren’s book (I call her Lauren), because hello, it’s about talking. You can’t READ about talking fast. You listen. About talking fast.

So spill it! I’m going to make a little document like the nerd I am, with all your suggestions, so that I can make my way through all the listenage. Which sounds like hemorrhage. I like it.

Winter Herbs

Um, you know the old man in Knick Knack Paddywack Give the Dog a Bone? I’m sorry, what exactly is knick knacking? I watched a video of this nursery rhyme yesterday with the grems, and some old creepy dude is just moving his hands back and forth with a prison smile on his face. WHAT IS KNICK KNACKING?

Does he have a license to do all this knick knacking?

And why does he jump from a thumb, to a shoe, to a knee (<–awkward), to a door, to a BEE HIVE, to some sticks, to HEAVEN, back down to a gate at some chick’s house, then to her SPINE? No. This knick knacking is clearly not regulated and neither is all the “rolling home” he does. How does an old man ROLL HOME? Especially after all the knick knacking! “If that’s some sort of drug reference, it isn’t funny.” (<–name that show.)

Winter Trees

Weekend plans?

Tonight we continue with FFFFF (or Fabulous Friday Flashback Film Fun, for long) wiiiiith Barefoot in the Park! 1967, Robert Redford and Jane Fonda. Ugh. Can’t wait. We’re pairing a dry Chardonnay with it, along with steamed mussels and fries. I’ll actually be Wine Talking on Snap and IG later this afternoon, so stay tuned! (you don’t have to.)

If you remember, last week we watched Bonnie and Clyde, and omgILOVEDIT. Absolutely freaking loved it. The style, the story, the cars, Warren Beatty’s face, all of it. A+.

Other than that, I’m attending a girlfriend’s 40th bday party tomorrow night. It’s KARAOKE. Also known as, I apologize now for all the Barbra and Celine headed to your earholes, Kansas City.

WAIT. Do you think they edit out the bankrupt spins and let Pat try again? Or is he secretly wearing a multi-colored cape under that suit?

My money’s on the cape.

Yoga for zen! I don't do it nearly enough but when I do my body feels spent and relaxed and my mind is clear. Until I get home to 2 littles and the madness begins again.

If you want a podcast that feeds into your Gilmore Girls love, Gilmore Guys is a pretty good one! They went through all of the seasons so it'll take a while to get through!

SERIAL postcast - I don't even normally like that kind of stuff but they do a great job. Start with season one: https://serialpodcast.org/
    • Bev Weidner January 20, 2017 at 9:30 am #
I've actually listened to Serial! That first season was increeeeedible. Was the second season as good? We started it, and I got bored. :)
      • Heather January 20, 2017 at 12:24 pm #
I couldnt get through the second season of Serial either, but the podcast Up and Vanished is very similar to season 1 and SO SO good. I listened to almost the whole thing in one day!

Stick with the 2nd season of Serial. Kinda slow sometimes, true, however it gets interesting and you are pulled back and forth on which side. You need quiet time though to get through the interviews though.

The first season of Serial is a MUST, if you haven't heard it yet. I personally couldn't get into the second season but the first one was SO good, I was obsessing. I also listen to Modern Love and Dear Sugar Radio. Modern Love is different actors reading essays about love (but not all ooey gooey sappy stuff) from different writers, with commentary after by the writer, editor and actor. I've heard a few that were a little meh but normally it is VERY good. Dear Sugar Radio is Cheryl Strayed (Wild/Tiny Beautiful Things) and Steve Almond (no clue who this guy is, really) giving advice on letters that people send in. It can be very good. I will say, Steve Almond is not my favorite cat, but Cheryl Strayed is eloquent and lovely and makes up for it all. (Side note - if you haven't read Tiny Beautiful Things, do that too!) As far as murder podcasts go, I have struggled to find one I love. I usually can't get enough of the stuff, but honestly a lot of the ones I have listened to are either boring or hard to follow. Casefile is the best one I have found, usually pretty good, but I personally didn't find all of them interesting and the guy is Australian and a little hard to follow at times. A friend of mine who shared my love for season one of Serial recently suggested My Favorite Murder. She said it is really good - two girls who sort of research murders and then just talk about it and go off on tangents. I haven't listened to that one yet! Wondering if you have ever watched Parenthood? If you haven't, drop everything now and do that instead! It will satisfy your need for fast-talking banter and Lauren Graham. Good stuff! I don't ever feel more zen than when I am on a trail. Hot yoga is a close second. The heat is a must because normal yoga I get bored and distracted and end up focusing more on how my pants are riding up. Not so zen. Hot yoga (for me at least) is about survival. Too bus doing anything but focusing on getting through it to think about anything else. Afterward you feel like you are floating! Please share a list of podcasts when you get it compiled. I am always looking for more!

YESSSSS I watched Parenthood back when it was on! It was my LIFE. Sucked me in. Maybe even slightly more than GG, which is insane to say. The end of Parenthood was the whole reason I got into red lipstick. I needed a new direction in my life. :)

I'm definitely all about the yoga. Twice or three times a week, I'll do hot power yoga at my gym, which is a great workout, and then savasana feels extra great. You might be interested in restorative yoga, which is slower paced and very relaxing. You stay in different poses longer, and use blankets and bolsters (which are super comfy!) I try to do a few sun salutations each morning at home to help get my blood flowing and get me ready for the day. I find it really helps my mind too. And I can't personally vouch for the effectiveness because I haven't tried one yet, but I know there are apps and sites like Calm and Headspace that guide you in meditating for 5-10 minutes.

Unsolved Murders: True Crime Stories Lore Podcast The Longest Shortest Time Criminal I think you'll like those the best!
  7. Tif January 20, 2017 at 10:56 am #
Since I'm not in KC to witness in person, can you share with us the exact Babra and Celine song titles you will be dazzling with?? Anna Faris is Unqualified is the only thing that helps time move when I'm on the treadmill. Awesome celebrity guests. Language Not Suitable for Grems.
  8. Laura January 20, 2017 at 12:12 pm #
The Road Back to You is a heck of a podcast! A really wonderful, engaging introduction to a subject worth exploring - The Enneagram. Enjoy!
  9. Deanna January 20, 2017 at 12:46 pm #
Zen: I'm into painting and coloring at the moment because I don't have to go anywhere like I do to get a good yoga class. Podcasts: My Favorite Murder (surprisingly funny), The mortified Podcast (people reading their old diaries in front of an audience), and Splled Milk (because Food).
  10. Emily January 20, 2017 at 1:32 pm #
Cup of Jo has turned me onto some really great podcasts! They did a list of their favorites last week, I recommend checking it out. My favorite podcast is "How I Built This". It tells stories through interview of how people got their super well-known businesses, like Instagram, to where they are today. My favorite episodes are the Spanx one (a good dose of real life and what is like to be a woman!) and the Clif Bar one.
  11. Rachel January 20, 2017 at 1:44 pm #
My favorite podcasts right now are: Two Dope Queens, Sooo Many White Guys, Death Sexy and Money, Reply All, How I Built This, and Criminal
  12. Jackie January 20, 2017 at 2:43 pm #
Alec Baldwin has one called "Here's the Thing". Also, I've listened to every single episode of "Happier" with Gretchen Rubin (author of "the happiness project") and her sister Liz Craft, who also happen to be KC natives.
  13. Stacy January 20, 2017 at 2:49 pm #
The Popcast with Knox and Jamie if you like pop culture. They are hysterical and I laugh during every single episode. The cold open on Bonus episode: How to deal with Halloween is the best. The Anna and Susannah Show - they are writers and have had stories/videos go viral. Anna is the fart story lady. If you watch the Real Housewives then Bitchsesh is always funny.
    • Jennifer January 21, 2017 at 10:12 am #
I second the Popcast. Knox and Jamie crack me up, especially when Knox is wheezy-laughing. Too funny! Smartest Person in the room is another good one. And then on my back burner that I check out every now and then are Sorta Awesome, Pop Culture Happy Hour and Young House Love Has A Podcast. My zen is talking about going to yoga but then never going. That should probably change.

I love Revisionist History from Malcolm Gladwell. Currently there's only 10 episodes, unfortunately, but they are interesting (not funny...sorry!) but he goes back and shows different sides of historical events. He's great! Then of course, the old standbys: TED Radio Hour and This American Life. My recommendations aren't very light hearted...wondering what this says about me...I need some happy! Also, Gilmore Guys?! Haven't heard of that podcast but definitely checking it out. Almost done with Fall and I already am so sad. Cheers!
  15. nicole January 20, 2017 at 5:14 pm #
I've been binge listening to the My Favorite Murder podcast - definitely recommend.
  16. Lindsay January 20, 2017 at 6:35 pm #
I STRONGLY suggest the One Bad Mother podcast. It's all about the ups and downs of motherhood in a very, very funny way. You won't regret it!
  17. Stephanie Hanson January 20, 2017 at 8:54 pm #
Well it sounds like you need some yoga. I am a type A crazy myself and yoga has done wonders for my need for zen. If you can't make it to a class, I would recommend Yoga with Adriene - I've been doing her yoga revolution since the new year and it's been awesome!! As far as podcasts go you've already listened to Serial...and all the other ones I follow are super geeky and specific to my job.
  18. Christine January 20, 2017 at 9:55 pm #
For podcasts: Serial, Criminal, Mortified, The Way I Heard It by Mike Rowe, The Megan and Rachel Show. All seriously good and very different.
  19. Sara B. January 20, 2017 at 10:57 pm #
For Zen (with a capital Z): There's an amazing guided meditation app called Headspace. It's a little pricy for an app, but you can't put a price on ZEN, right? Seriously though. For podcasts: Mystery Show and More Perfect. And Song Exploder. And Invisibilia. Oh! And Gilmore Guys! I should have lead with that.
  20. Heather January 21, 2017 at 1:30 am #
Ok zen-wise, are you interested in meditating? There's an app I've been using called Calm and you can choose different "themed" ones or just a plain calm sound with a time set. And podcast-wise the only one I can think of is Serial, the first season, it's real life murder mystery (so much better than Making a Murderer!)
  21. Nic January 21, 2017 at 3:45 am #
Everyone's talking about zen and podcasts. Instead, I'm going to tell you about Wheel of Fortune in Australia (from when I was a kid. I don't think it's on here anymore). When John had his turn at spinning the wheel and it landed on Bankrupt or Lose a Turn he had another spin. Adrianna was his letter turner (which you didn't ask about but I thought you'd like to know).

Brain Candy podcast is a lot of fun. Were you ever into old school Real World and Road Rules? The girls who do the podcast are Susie Meister from Road Rules Down Under and Sarah Rice from Real World Brooklyn (I believe). Super fun and informative.
  23. Klara Donovan January 21, 2017 at 9:27 pm #
More zen. Ooooo I LIKE THIS. I have no suggestions. Literally none. But your post has made me want to find some intentional ways of doing this now. Sothankyou.
  24. Laura January 22, 2017 at 1:11 pm #
10-30 min meditation in the morning or during my son's nap. Sometimes guided, sometimes not. But I definitely feel the difference when I am doing it and when I am not. The Brain Candy Podcast Alison Rosen is Your New Best Friend One Part Podcast That's Deep, Bro You might also like Gilmore Guys!
  25. caitlin January 22, 2017 at 7:36 pm #
podcast I'm recommending to everyone - My Favorite Murder!! Someone else already mentioned it. LOVE
  26. Bethany January 23, 2017 at 12:57 pm #
I second Lore! I love the stories and Aaron Mahnke's voice is perfect for delivering them. They're mostly just sort of creepy, but the Robert the Doll episode gave me NIGHTMARES.
  27. Lauren Smith January 23, 2017 at 7:00 pm #
My favorite podcast is Sounds Good with Brandon Harvey! So encouraging and uplifting!
