Friday Flotsam

FAH-reedee.

Fall trees

Also known as: ONLY SIX MORE DAYS OF GOBBLE-FEST PREP. (aaaaand six more days until the new Gilmore Girls comes out! Ugh, but we can’t even rightly talk about it because I’m NO WHERE NEAR READY. I’m finishing season two today. Season two! This is how slow I’ve been. But listen! I have – you know what, hold on. Let me finish my other thought. If I remember what it was. Was it Beanie Babies? No! T-day. Right.)

But I ain’t skeered! Matter of fact, as of today, I’m bracing for impact. I’m locked and loaded. Armed and dangerous. The grocery list has begun. Board games have arrived, the linens are ready, the firewood arrives today, the turkey is about to get its dang thaw on.

Last night I asked you all on IG Stories for topic suggestions today, and a popular one was – “What’s on your menu next week!?”

So heeeere we go, pigeons. (pigeons are not on the menu, just to be clear):

Making the cranberry sauce this weekend. A few of the recipes are coming from Cooking Light, but at the moment I’ve lost the Thanksgiving issue! I bet you anything it’s in one of the kids’ rooms. Thieves!

Let’s see – sweet potato casserole, broccoli cheese and rice casserole, roasted garlic mashed potatoes with gravy, traditional dressing, herb-roasted turkey, roasted root veggies, skillet green bean casserole, creamed pearl onions, sauerkraut (it’s a Weidner fam tradition that goes back maaaaaaany years), rolls, and two pies.

Is that it?

Oh! Wine, wine, wine, beer, Bloody Mary, Bloody Mary, wine, Bloody Mary, beer, wine, wine, wine, wine.

Not sure what everyone else will have, though.

Soaps at Pryde's in Westport

So, Gilmore Girls. EEEEE!

I’m DYING that I can’t just sit around and binge obsess through these seasons. That darn husband and kids and work and house and other things in life to nourish. Pfft!

I’m at the part where I can tell Rory’s getting a leeeeettle bored with Dean. He’s calling constantly, lurking around, always in her face. I totally think she likes Jess! How could you not, with that dark hyper-feathered gorgeous hair and darling crooked smile. Ugh. There’s definitely some borderline flirty tension going on between them. I love it. Reminds me of my youth. When thinning neck skin was a nightmare left to be handled by the way distant future.

Sookie’s planning her wedding, Michel’s mom came to visit, Emily’s accusing (because that’s what it is) Lorelai of liking Luke, Lorelai denies it, Luke’s hair looks better in a hat, his uncle just died, Paris and Rory are becoming chum chums much to Paris’ chagrin, they just made hideous first aid kits for teenagers with the help of Rory’s grandpa. The end. (I would not buy one of those, by the way.)

I’m going to cram in as many episodes today while the gremlins nap. (!!!!)

I should end this section with an EEEEE, huh? Like I did in the opener, you know.

So, do it or don’t do it?

Yay, okay!

EEEEEEEEEE!

Fallen apples

Let’s talk makeup! (I swear I won’t hit you with a sparkly pillow.)

This was the most-asked-about topic from last night’s IG Story poll. (you know how I love polls.)

You guys want to know what my makeup routine is? Well shoot, y’allz – I’ll hook it up.

  1. After I moisturize (skin care is another entire topic of its own) – I put Juice Beauty Stem Cellular Cream on. It’s tinted and also sunscreen! I love it. Got it in a Birchbox years ago. It adds a little glow, and evens out my skin tone like whoa.
  2. After that, I brush a little bit of Bare Minerals’ medium powder foundation on. It’s not cakey at ALL, and I dig the way it tones down shine.
  3. For blush, it’s cheap drugstore all the way. Matter of fact, the label has rubbed off, so I have no idea what this is. But it’s a mix of browns and pinks. Me like.
  4. Eyes! To start, I rub a tiny bit of the cream-colored part of this NYC Smokey Brown thingy. It’s the lower right. (my label has rubbed off) I gently rub this all over the lid, and in the inner corner of my lids. It’s a nice nude, but lighter.
  5. Oh, eyebrow brush/pencil. I LOVE THIS THING.
  6. For the eyeshadow, I use Bobbi Brown’s Smoldering Eye Palette, but it looks like they no longer have it. Something in this family though!
  7. Then it’s Mac’s Kohl in Smolder for the eyeliner. (E.L.F.’s black pencil works fab, too!)
  8. Eyelashes – Lash Stiletto! Dig it. I also love They’re Real. Both are pimp.
  9. LIPS – the moooost asked-about product ever (for me). Rimmel #620 – Call Me Crazy. It’s bright, cheerful, slightly coral – I can’t get enough. It’s my fave! Not fav.

And that’s it!

Oh, and to the very, ahem, friendly person on Instagram who wants to know why my lipstick always looks sloppy, and my makeup is harsh and looks like I slept in it. First of all, I totally agree with you! I’m no expert.

Second of all, I actually have an answer. I have scars on my lips from childhood, you see, so lipstick doesn’t lay flat across my lips. It goes up in one corner. It’s preposterous, I know. But you’re super sweet for pointing it out.

(did I forget anything!?)

A row of birdhouses

I think the hair washing sinks at salons should have neck padding. That’s all.

Toddlers buried in leaves

Weekend plans? Tell me your Thanksgiving menu! What will you prep this weekend? Are you hosting, or traveling? Will you go all out or keep it simple and order takeout? Tell me about your tablescape – do you go full-on frilly with fruit and flowers and candles, or do you stick a single half-burnt candle in the middle of the table and call it a day? Do your ears hang low? Do they wobble to and fro? Can you tie them in a knot? Can you tie them in a bow?

I need these details to exist in this life.

I think your make up ROCKS!!!!!!!! Rude that someone would comment otherwise!! I'm on Season One Gilmore Girls (thanks to you I am hooked).

I'm trying to slyly influence my mother's Thanksgiving dinner. "Oh look, I already bought a TON of potatoes, and all the stuffing ingredients. And I'm making a pie." Its not that my mom is a bad cook, my dad loves everything super traditional which can get boring. I'm just adding a little variation to the traditional menu. Also, I have detached earlobes so they do wobble to and fro. Happy Thanksgiving!

I bet the woman who commented about your lipstick doesn't wear any. What a pumpkinhead.

Turkey sandwiches and kettle chips. We skip straight to leftovers.

High five for the padding at the hair salon on the hair washing sinks!!! And why hasn't that happened?
  8. Jenn I November 18, 2016 at 12:04 pm #
Can't wait for Gilmore Girls, but I can't stand Jess and loooove Dean. Also, your snark is amazing and I love it. People are jerks. Happy thanksgiving!
  9. Molly November 18, 2016 at 12:19 pm #
You need to listen to the Gilmore Guys podcast ASAP! Listen in order and bear with them - it takes a few episodes for them to find their groove, but once they do it is AMAZING. One of the hosts grew up watching and loving it, and one is watching for the first time, and they have lots of special guests. They even got background cameos in the revival!

Do peeps put eyeliner on after eye shadow??!! Asking for a friend, of course!
    • Bev Weidner November 18, 2016 at 3:22 pm #
Yep! Apply the shadow first, then line the eye after. I like to draw mine out juuuust a tad in the outer corners. It opens the eye a little more!
      • Andrea November 18, 2016 at 4:27 pm #
Thanks, I'll let her know ?

I can't believe someone made such a rude comment about your lipstick! What is wrong w/ people??? I think you're BEAUTIFUL! But that is beside the point... seriously, what would possess someone to be so nasty?! Someone whose mother apparently didn't teach her that "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all". Someone needs to slap that woman's mother. :P jk But maybe give her a good flick. You've got me hooked on GG's, but I'm still only in season 1 so I had to scroll past your commentary above w/ my eyes closed. But I peeked a little bit on the Dean & Rory part... so apparently there's a Jess that shows up in Season 2? Why hasn't someone invented the neck padding for the hair salon sinks yet??? For some reason it gives me such anxiety. I'm all, "No! Don't do the scalp massage! Skip the conditioner! Just get me upright asap!!!"

Dang, I hope you're having lots of people over! It all sounds delicious! I love hearing others' traditions, there's always something I'd never think of. I like it simple: turkey, gravy, roasted sweet potatoes with brown sugar and walnuts, bread of some kind, and sautéed green beans. BUT it's never that simple, someone always has a nostalgia thing that ABSOLUTELY REQUIRES *fill-in-the-blank food item*. Anyway, happy almost thanksgiving!
  13. Lauren Smith November 18, 2016 at 4:26 pm #
I'm actually doing a brunch with a few of my friends! (I'm not the biggest fan of Thanksgiving food....I know I know.)
  14. Jenn November 18, 2016 at 4:31 pm #
Bev- I really enjoyed this post! I especially love that you use makeup people can afford! I am an avid blog reader and makeup lover . I find that most bloggers blog about their makeup routines and what they love and it's all things that are super expensive ! I don't mind paying a little more for some key items - of course!! But when every item is so pricey it is irritating! I thoroughly enjoy the fact that your beautiful bright red lipstick is RIMMEL!! As a single mother of 3 - I do most of my makeup shopping in Target so reading about your makeup is so refreshing ! You ALWAYS look so put together and beautiful. Who ever the jerk is who made the unkind comments shouldn't be allowed a keyboard and access to the world of the internet ! People are so mean ! I also love GG and have commented to you on Instagram. I am on season 4 so I won't spoil any of the fun for you! I am team jess too by the way . Umm until.. nevermind! Enjoy your binging of TV and your adorable family at thanksgiving #hatersgonnahate

Bev, you and your writing are a delight and I hope that is the most time you ever spend replying to asshats on the internet who are mean (and who DEFINITELY don't watch Gilmore Girls because how could you be so grumpy when you have Jess in your life?) PS How do you keep so many plants alive without resorting to dozens of IKEA fake ones scattered about? Asking for a friend.

I'm glad others jumped on the IG rude person so I don't have to. I just came home from the salon and I was thinking about the neck padding thingy before even reading your blog today. Great minds... Also, my mother-in-law stuffed a turkey with sauerkraut one year and I was totally appalled. Not a fan of that stuff anyway and then she went and contaminated the once-a-year Thanksgiving main dish with it! No likey. Never again. In my list of 'thankful fors' this year I am including your blog. Thanks for your humor, the great food, the cute kid pics, and the stream of consciousness that I totally get (should I be scared?). Oh, and the shoe recommendations! I bought my own Pons so I don't have to envy yours and I'm considering those adorable black shoes you got from Israel. SO my style and they look comfy, too. Have a great Thanksgiving!
  17. Corbie November 18, 2016 at 6:18 pm #
Bev! Love this post! Ok..tablescape... I love to use short square vases full of cut mums and small votive candles in small glass containers down the center of the table. This way everyone can still see each other. It's way simple but very classy looking. Your menu sounds fantastic! All my faves plus a few fun other dishes! Are you making everything yourself?? I always look forward to watching your IG videos at carpool pick up! They make my day! Love the makeup and lipstick- you rock it girl!

No WAY! Oh, I'm going to get so obsessed. :)
  19. Debbie D November 19, 2016 at 6:03 am #
You are gorgeous and don't let anyone else tell you differently. Had to look up broccoli and cheese casserole. Hmmmm. I think I might try that but with quinoa instead of the rice (can't have rice) or with cauliflower rice. Should be delicious. Thanks for adding to my stash of recipes!

I'm Canadian so we are well past Turkey time! I actually bought Turkey in a box(DONTJUDGEME!) ...( okay you can judge me a little, I kinda deserve it) Super excited in an elegant classy(wearing pjs while eating pop tarts is classy riiiight?) way that GG is coming on in 6 days. Enjoy your turkey time!!!

There ARE neck padding things for salon shampoo bowls (I'm a hairstylist). Some of them aren't really that padded..so not really helpful, others can break down quickly or get pretty funky and need to be replaced frequently so some stylists don't like to use them and some stylists feel they can't shampoo you as well (in the nape area) with one. You can always ask them to put a towel down on the bowl first to help or nicely mention to them 'that it's uncomfortable...do you have anything for padding...?'

dear Bev , you are my favourite Blogger , hands down...so funny and real! I hope you have a lovely Thanksgiving . Love wins. I saw this today on Cup Of Jo blog and thought of you and your kiddies. Peppa Pig classroom playset...check it out ! Silly Daddy Pig!

Its good to hear that Hansel and Gretel found a suitable home for both themselves and their soon to be newborn. The goats and llamas are seemingly very welcoming as well; you have a great animal community there at the inn. These pictures are great.
