So I Had Some Babies

It was January 6th, the coldest day ever. Ever in the history of the world and ever loving everness.

wn1

I was 37 weeks and one day pregnant with a boy and a girl (ninja?) inside my cranktankerous belly. I was swollen. I was crampy. I was contractiony. I was anti-bacterial-y. I had makeup on! But no nail polish. I was excited. I was terrified. I was freaking hungry.

wn2

IV – done.

Into the operating room we go.

Time for the epidural – oh gawd, ew. But okay. It was so weird, it was FREEZING in the OR. And then just like that, my legs became super heavy and hot and I was being maneuvered onto my back, curtain up, 14 trillion doctors and nurses crowded around, Aaron scrubbed up and at my head, and bing bam boodily do, 12:19 pm little William Everett popped (er, was yanked) out. And then at 12:21 pm little miss Natalie James popped out.

Do you want to see them?

wn4

Of course as soon as it was done I was all, “Who’s gonna run out and tell our parents LIKE IN THE MOVIES?”

So Aaron ran out. But only for 1 minute and 34 seconds or else I would have lopped his head off with my gimpy log legs.

(Quick thing – did you know that your brain remembers the last position your body was in before it goes numb? I thought my legs were bent and sticking up the entire time! I was wrong. The end.)

Just look at his smile. Oh, my heart.

(During this time they were playing with my organs! Doesn’t that sound like such fun? The end again.)

wn12

You just want to see the babies, don’t you?

But first, here are the parents seeing some quick photos of the babi – OKAY! okay.

wn13

Feetsies!

wn5

Toesies!

I don’t know who is who in these photos. I suck. Don’t tell the babies.

wn6

And there they are. Natalie’s on the left and Will’s on the right. They look pretty big in this photo, but in real life they’re TINY. I should have stuck a coin or a turtle in the crib for comparison. She was 5 lbs and 13 oz. And Will was 5 lbs and 9 oz. Then they dropped a bunch of weight and ish got a little scary, but all is well!

wn7

Here’s Will, getting his post-birth bath. Clearly he enjoyed every second!

wn8

And here’s Natalie getting her suds on. Probably her favorite moment in life thus far. Probably.

wn9

A couple of hours of recovery later and we were moved to a super huge and posh room where we’d spend the next four days getting used to the fact that we’ve just made the world a slightly scarier place.

Also, after a c-section, I seriously looked like SpongeBev Squarepants. It was definitely a great look for me.

wn10

Dude, we’re parents. This is bad. Really, really bad.

wn11

Friday morning we packed up and headed back to the hizzy!

That really needs to be the last time I ever, ever say hizzy.

wn14

Home. At last. With these two.

I want to eat her hands.

wn15

And her nose.

wn16

And her eyes and lips.

wn17

And his hair.

wn18

And his fingers.

wn19

And his perfect, ovary-licious wrinkled forehead.

wn20

Will, “Okay, so this is the plan. Tonight, just when they think they’re going to sleep, you scream as loud as you possibly can from 10:30 pm to 2:30 am. Then I’ll take over from 2:30 through the rest of the night. Trust me, this will be GREAT.”

Nat, “Yeah yeah, man. I can dig it.”

wn21

Will, “And one more thing. If you could poop all over dad’s hands and chest right around 1:30 am, he’ll LOVE it. This is gonna be so good.”

Nat, “Yep, can do.”

wn22

Babies.

Did you guys know that babies poop and pee? Like all day? On a lot of things? Like your hands and clothing? And without warning! I mean, how rude is that? You don’t see me walking up to them and taking a big doo on their legs, now do you? No.

wn23

Schemesters. I see right through it.

wn28

Did you guys know that babies cry a lot? They do. They cry a lot. And it’s very, very loud. And feels like your brain is going to slide out of your ear holes and onto the floor.

Now I truly know why wine was invented.

wn29

Did you guys know that babies don’t know anything? At all. We have to teach them everything. Every single thing ever.

I’m actually quite terrified for them.

wn30

Yes, mommy needs to wash her hair. But you’re not supposed to really see much of anything right now, so let’s just ignore it, cool?

wn24

Here I am pretending that I even know how to hold an infant.

wn25

Like, I’m looking at these photos and I miss them. And they’re right next to me. This is completely ridiculous.

So, Will is definitely the chill one. The thinker. The sleeper. And Natalie? Oh Lord is she a pistol.

I have, um, no idea where she gets it.

wn27

All I know is that I survived IVF, nearly nine months of carrying twins, a needle in my spine (barf), a c-section, learning how to pee again, looking like a swollen blob of square squishy human tofu, and now the fresh beginnings of a new life with you two.

Hold on tight, littles.

I swear I’ll brush my teeth next time I kiss you. Maybe.

wn26

Also, they completely rule the universe.

*For an obnoxious amount of babyness, you can always peep my Instagram. Just don’t tell your husbands.

(All photos taken by my fabulous sister, Barbara. So yeah, don’t expect my future posts to be this pretty.)

It's probably completely ridiculous that I'm crying right now. But good grief what darlings. And I'm just so happy for you, I could explode. Babies are so hard and so exhausting and so scary and such a GIFT. Every age is like a present. Lucy took her first step this morning (she's 14 months...we move quickly around here, as you can see) and I thought I was going to die from screaming my head off. She was giggling, I was jumping and screaming like a maniac, then we went and ate a cookie for breakfast like no bigs, babies don't need nutrition. See? That's a year away. So fast!! So many great things. Can't wait to see what you all get up to :)
  27. Gina January 22, 2014 at 1:32 pm #
Congrats Bev and Aaron!! You made the most perfect babies ever! They're beautiful. I think I never commented on the blog before but I discovered you almost a year ago and I was so thrilled to finally met Will and Natalie through Instagram! :) I can't get enough of baby photos and I'm starting to get worried. I really enjoy your foodie photos even though they make me feel crazy hungry... But, lady, your baby photos are making my ovaries sing and I'm not even 22 yet. For God's sake, STOP IT!

  53. Elisabeth January 22, 2014 at 2:47 pm #
Bev, I wholeheartedly congratulate you, these babies are wonderful and beautiful, and I'm having a big baby fever episode right this minute! Thank you so much for sharing!!! Just one tinytiny piece of mom wisdom from me: These two already know everything. You don't have to "teach" them. It's just as hard, but the most important task is creating an environment for them to be able to develop what they already know. Gah, this sounds crazy and flakey - but it's true! You'll be a great mom, just try to listen to the two of them and your and your husbands gut. Nothing else matters. P.S. My son is already a toddler, but I still have that feeling sometimes - missing him although he's right there!
  54. Bri January 22, 2014 at 2:54 pm #

Aw Bev! I wish I was closer so I could come and hold TWO babies at one time! That's CRAZY! But I know what it's like to be at home alone with a baby, and the crying, and the no sleep. So I FEEL for you, I really do. I don't even know what I would do if I had two, I mean...who's making your COFFEE??? I know they will be amazing. Soak it in...I know EVERYONE who has ever had babies will say that but it really does go sooooo fast. I miss the smell of those tiny little feet! Mine spend all day begging for food and hitting each other with foam swords. Having one of each is THE BEST!

Bev, we share a lot of blogger friends, but we've never really met - and it felt weird to sort of introduce myself in the midst of our two pregnancies just because we were both pregnant and both went through the hell (and heaven, when it works out) that is IVF. But I just wanted to say that I am so so so very happy for you guys. As a fellow infertility sufferer, I know the highs you're on right now - that kind of make the lows not so bad, y'know? Anyway, congratulations again. Your babies are beautiful, and so are you. - Amber

Bev!! Will and Natalie are perfect. Like in every single way {but of course you know that!}... I'm so thrilled for you two! Love you to pieces! XO

Thanks for sharing these amazing photos and your journey, Bev! I was hoping for a post like this, but with TWO newborns, I didnt know if you'd have any time! Wow, you're superwoman! Congrats!!!! They are beautiful :) xoxo

Double the blessings! Congratulations, Bev! Your babies are just adorable. Having been down a similar path (IVF resulting in triplets), I can relate to what you are experiencing :) It does get easier and easier! Keep with the feeding/sleeping schedule - that's the key to keeping your sanity. It was for me at least. Well, that and wine.

Congratulations!!!! They're so beautiful! Glad all is happy back at the hizzy, cough, I mean house.

I love them. LOVE them. I will pretend that you named Natalie after me...because that makes me smile. The fact that she is a pistol makes me think that she will take after my sweet Summer. Pistol now. Ball of energy always. Full of sunshine and rainbows and a zest for life forever. Have fun, Bev! You have just entered the very best journey of all.

Ok, I'm over here crying. This is so freaking adorable. Bev, you and Aaron deserve all the happiness in the world, and I'm so glad they are here! You're going to be an awesome mama! I secretly love that Natalie is a pistol like you :)

Bev, this is awesome. Made me miss my babies. Now I'm just cleaning pee off the toilet seat from my 6'5" son instead of my face. Love the pic of your parents looking at the phone, best pic ever. Parenting is scary, I'm not gonna lie. But it's fun too. Funner than scary. A sense of humor helps...and wine. And if it matters...I have 2 girls and 2 boys. Girls are pains, usually, mostly, all the time. Boys are easy, usually, mostly all the time. I love them all the same, usually, mostly, all the time. Amen. XO Sheila

BABIES!!!! Two beautiful ones! Congratulations so, so much. As a single girl who cannot wait to be a mother, I love reading about the experience. Also, as a close friend of mine recently had a baby boy 5 weeks early via c-section thanks to the miracle of IUI and fertility medicine, I feel like I've learned so much about this process and since you got pregnant a similar way - YAY!

Congratulations to both of you! This brought back so many memories. Not that I had twins, but I had three little girls -- have, but they are now in their 20s. My middle daughter was teensy, 6 pounds, 1 ounce, like a scrawny little chick, but is now a beautiful 26-year-old marketing executive. Wishing you all the joy there is, on the journey!

Reading this brought back all the memories from when my special babies were born. They are 11 now and for a moment's time, I could smell them, feel them and remember how they felt in my arms at that age. They weighed almost the same as yours. I also have a Natalie. (The other one is Kearstyn) Thank you so much for that blast backwards if only for a fleeting moment. Time truely travels so fast. Cherish every minute with your angels. Before too long you will be running around with sports and dance and all the other things that come with them growing. You, me and many others belong to a very exclusive club where the members are handpicked by God. Take care and God bless you and your beautiful family♥
