Jalapeno Peppers: Before and After

I spy something green.

I spy something 4 inches long.

I spy something spicy.

I spy a bowl filled with 3,915 of these things.

I spy a garden birthing 7,624 more of these things.

I spy a panicked married couple staring at each other through a blur of tears, scratching their armpits and wondering how they’re going to manage this monster truckload of heat.

Oh! I spy a dehydrator.

I spy 48 hours of hands-off work and a house that smells so incredible you could charge top dollar for neighborhood whiffs.

I spy peace and happiness, once again inside the confines of a ranch house in Kansas.

Crushed Jalapeno Peppers:

What you need:

* However many jalapeno peppers your heart desires, sliced in half, lengthwise

* a dehydrator

Layer the peppers on the racks in the dehydrator. Turn it on and forget about for about 48 hours. Your house will. smell. so. good.

Remove the crispy peppers from the machine and throw them into a sealable plastic bag. Using a rolling pin, roll over the the bag until they become crushed pepper flakes.

Store and use in pastas, pizzas, salads, WHAT HAVE YOU. (I just like that phrase so much.)

** You can use this method for any pepper out there, baby! **

Can I come to your house and just breathe? I'm much too much of a wuss to eat spicy things like jalapenos, but I'll smell them all day long.

They sound delicious. I can't wait to see what you create out of these things!

I want to raid your wooden cutting boards and wooden planks and oh yes, your natural PERFECT sunlight...gah. My house is NOT set up for good food photography. I have to get soooo creative. Did you take these pics inside or outside? I need the photo411 :)

Aww, Averie! Thank you. These shots were all inside! I have this big window, and I like the mood that it offers with the shadows, etc. Girl, if we lived closer we'd definitely have to go food prop shoppin' togetha!

What a great idea! I wish I had a dehydrator because I have a LOT of peppers from a recent farm trip. Maybe I can dehydrate in a low heat oven and do the same thing.

Wow I love this idea! It is genius! I dont have any jalapenos or a dehydrator, but my parents have tons in their garden so I will be passing on this idea to them. And if you are offering to share, you can definitely send some of those my way! ;)

I adore the fragrance of jalapenos-of couse, makes me think of New Mexico. In Artesia, they would roast chilis in front of Walmart and I miss that here in Texas. However, I'm quite the pansy when it comes to "hot" flavors. Your blog has tempted me to go purchase a dehydrator and just do this so I can enjoy the smells.....thanks! I enjoy reading!

Thank you so much for posting this! The timing couldn't have been more perfect! Some friends gave me TONS of fresh jalapenos and other hot peppers, and I was in a quandary as to what to do with all of them! Then, voila! Your post! I'll definitely be getting my dehydrator out ASAP!

Is it possible to dehydrate jalapenos in the oven? I don't own a dehydrator and I have no plans to purchase one, but this sounds so good!

Absolutely! It might take a while, but dry them out on a low heat setting for a day or so and see how they turn out. And let me know, too!

That's a good process. Perhaps I could prepare the best chili paste out of the jalapeno's.
